Effect of anaesthetics on calcium-induced luminescence of aequorin.

The effect of some general and local anaesthetics on the calcium-induced luminescence of aequorin was studied in vitro using a photomultiplier tube and recording technique. Purified aequorin (0.1 microliter) was injected into a 500 micron diameter porous cellulose acetate capillary tube containing 0.5 M KC1, 20 mM phosphate (pH 7.2) and calcium-EGTA buffers. The trapped aequorin was superfused with buffer solutions which sometimes contained anaesthetic (test) solutions. The results showed that some anaesthetics, e.g. urethane, etomidate and lignocaine, increased whereas others, e.g. methohexit

Chemiluminescent Probes with Long-Lasting High Brightness for In Vivo Imaging of Neutrophils.

Real-time optical imaging of immune cells can contribute to understanding their pathophysiological roles, which still remains challenging. Current sensitive chemiluminophores have issues of short half-lives and low brightness, limiting their ability for in vivo longitudinal monitoring of immunological processes. To tackle these issues, we report benzoazole-phenoxyl-dioxetane (BAPD)-based chemiluminophores with intramolecular hydrogen bonding for in vivo imaging of neutrophils. Compared with the classical counterpart, chemiluminescence half-lives and brightness of BAPDs in the aqueous solution

Probing the R lines in tris(acetylacetonato) chromium(III) and tris(3-bromo-acetylacetonato) chromium(III) by luminescence and excitation line narrowing spectroscopy.

Site-selective and narrowed luminescence and excitation spectra in the region of the (2)E <-- (4)A 2 transitions are reported for single crystals of Al(acac) 3/Cr(III) and Al(3-Br-acac) 3/Cr(III) (where acac is acetylacetonate). The R 2 line is pronounced in the brominated system and displays a comparable oscillator strength as the R 1 line. The (2)E splitting is found to be 138 cm (-1), and the (4)A 2 ground-state splitting is 1.39 cm (-1). However, in the case of the Al(acac) 3/Cr(III) system the R 2 line is not a distinct feature. We propose that vibronic coupling via a second-order Jahn-Te

Heme-catalyzed reduction of N-oxide and its application to sensing heme and hemoglobin via a chemiluminescent probe.

Catalytic reactions are extensively employed to amplify detection signals. Here, we present the overlooked catalytic nature of the heme-mediated reduction of N-oxide and the use of this process to guide the development of a chemiluminescence-based probe (CCP-1). The probe showed, unprecedentedly, similar responses towards free heme and hemoglobin.

Sandwiched naphthyl carbazole: Inversion Circularly Polarized Luminescence based on a pull-push electron valve strategy.

Inspired by circularly polarized luminescence (CPL), artificial CPL assembly has attracted intense attention. However, precise manipulation of chiral transfer from achiral and luminescent materials remains a formidable challenge. Two sandwiched carbazole and binaphthol derivatives composed of pyridine or trifluoride methyl benzene have been synthesized. Among R-1 and R-2, their spectra were found in the violet region, both in the solution and the film state. They exhibit the photoluminescence dissymmetry factors up to 1.4 × 10-3 for R-2 and an opposite value of -5.6 × 10-4 for R-1. Theoretical

Shell-Dependent Photoluminescence Studies Provide Mechanistic Insights into the Off-Grey-On Transitions of Blinking Quantum Dots.

The majority of quantum dot (QD) blinking studies have used a model of switching between two distinct fluorescence intensity levels, "on" and "off". However, a distinct intermediate intensity level has been identified in some recent reports, a so-called "grey" or "dim" state, which has brought this binary model into question. While this grey state has been proposed to result from the formation of a trion, it is still unclear under which conditions it is present in a QD. By performing shell-dependent blinking studies on CdSe QDs, we report that the populations of the grey state and the on state

Nanocomposite of europium organic framework and quantum dots for highly sensitive chemosensing of trinitrotoluene.

Luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered as next-generation sensor materials for small molecules and explosives. In the present work, a nanocomposite of luminescent europium organic framework (EuOF) and CdSe quantum dots (QDs) has been first time investigated for photoluminescence (PL) based highly sensitive detection of trinitrotoluene (TNT). The nanocomposite EuOF/QD has been synthesized by initiating the growth of EuOF in the presence of QDs. The successful synthesis of the product has been verified with the help of electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction analysis, and surf

Broadband and High Efficiency Near-Infrared Emission in Cr3+-Doped ZnWO4 Phosphors for Spectroscopic Applications.

The increasing demand for near-infrared phosphor-converted LEDs (NIR pc-LEDs) has spurred extensive research on broadband NIR phosphors. A series of Cr3+-doped ZnWO4 phosphors exhibiting broadband NIR emission was synthesized via a high-temperature solid-phase method. The photoluminescence (PL) excitation (PLE) spectrum of ZnWO4: Cr3+ exhibits two absorption bands in the 200-400 nm and 400-600 nm ranges, which match well with near-ultraviolet and blue LED chips. Under excitation, the PL spectrum shows a broad NIR emission extending from 700 to 1400 nm, with a full width at half maximum (FWHM)

Luminescent-reaction-enabled super-resolution imaging.

By breaking the optical diffraction limit, super-resolution fluorescence microscopy has advanced our understanding of biological complexity under the framework of light-excited luminescence1. The use of external light excitation remains a key factor that shapes the imaging capabilities and live-cell compatibility of fluorescence-based approaches2. An alternative is the reaction-excited luminescence, such as electrochemiluminescence (ECL)3, chemiluminescence (CL)4 and bioluminescence (BL)5, providing a chemically defined toolbox for enabling different imaging merits, from ultrasensitive analysi

Cell-based quantification of homocysteine utilizing bioluminescent Escherichia coli auxotrophs.

A cell-based quantitative assay system for Hcy has been developed by utilizing two Escherichia coli auxotrophs that grow in the presence of methionine (Met) and either homocysteine (Hcy) or Met, respectively. A bioluminescent reporter gene, which produces luminescence as cells grow, was inserted into the auxotrophs, so that cell growth can be readily determined. When the relative luminescence unit (RLU) values from the two auxotrophs immobilized within agarose gels arrayed on a well plate were measured, the amount of Hcy was quantitatively determined on the basis of differences between two RLU

Mechanistic Insight into H2S-Induced Fluorescence Quenching in a Robust Metal-Organic Framework.

The development of chemically robust sorbents capable of integrating capture and optical sensing of toxic gas remains a major challenge. Herein, the ultramicroporous Zn(II)-based metal-organic framework, MFM-520, has been investigated for the adsorption and luminescent detection of H2S. Breakthrough measurements at 298 K and 1 bar show a reversible H2S uptake of 3.91 mmol g-1, while powder X-ray diffraction confirms full retention of crystallinity after adsorption. Solid-state photoluminescence experiments reveal a pronounced, selective fluorescence turn-off response to H2S in the gas phase, w

OPTICALLY STIMULATED LUMINESCENCE OF LiF:Mg,Cu,P POWDER-INFLUENCE OF THERMAL TREATMENT.

It was recently found that LiF:Mg,Cu,P, which is a very well-known thermoluminescent (TL) material, exhibits also quite substantial optically stimulated luminescence (OSL). In the present work a study on the influence of thermal treatment on the LiF:Mg,Cu,P OSL intensity has been performed. The results revealed that the well-known 'gold standard' of 240°C annealing is not appropriate for OSL measurements. The annealing at lower temperatures produced significantly higher OSL intensity. The highest enhancement of the OSL signal, reaching 95% (compared to the initial signal after standard anneali

Dual sensing of oxygen and temperature using quantum dots and a ruthenium complex.

A scheme for the simultaneous determination of oxygen and temperature using quantum dots and a ruthenium complex is demonstrated. The luminescent complex [Ru(II)-tris(4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline)]2+ is immobilized in a non-hydrolytic sol-gel matrix and used as the oxygen sensor. The temperature information is provided by the luminescent emission of core-shell CdSe-ZnS semiconductor nanocrystals immobilized in the same material. Measurements of oxygen and temperature could be performed with associated errors of +/-2% of oxygen concentration and +/-1 degrees C, respectively. In addition, it

Boosting Red Room-Temperature Phosphorescence by Host-Guest Confinement: Acrylonitrile Derivatives in PMMA Toward Long-Lived Afterglow and Anti-Counterfeiting.

Organic room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) materials have attracted extensive interest in optoelectronics, information encryption, and biosensing due to their unique long-lived luminescence. However, most state-of-the-art organic RTP systems suffer from short lifetimes, low quantum efficiency, and severe nonradiative quenching under ambient conditions, greatly limiting practical applications. Herein, we develop a robust host-guest confinement strategy to achieve efficient ultra-long-lived red RTP by incorporating three newly designed acrylonitrile-based luminophores (Cz-Cz, Cz-Py, and Cz-D

Molecular rivet-enhanced in situ polymerized nonconventional luminescent hydrogels for rapid and sensitive biosensing.

BACKGROUND: Nonconventional luminescent hydrogels, which integrate optical reporting functions with a biomimetic three-dimensional matrix, exhibit significant potential in chemical sensing due to their excellent biocompatibility, photostability, and ease of synthesis. Despite these advantages, their practical application as high-performance analytical platforms faces two critical challenges: first, their inherently low fluorescence quantum yield (QY) in aqueous environments severely limits detection sensitivity for trace analysis; second, the slow mass transfer of analytes within traditional p
