An HPLC-DAD method has been developed to quantitatively analyze for the content of zeaxanthin dipalmitate, a major carotenoid in Fructus Lycii, in different species of the genus Lycium. Determination was performed using an Alltima C18 column with the mobile phase consisting of acetonitrile and dichloromethane (42:58). The total contents of carotenoids in these samples were also determined by using UV spectrophotometric assay. Total carotenoid concentrations of different Fructus Lycii are within the range of 0.03-0.5%. Zeaxanthin dipalmitate is a predominant carotenoid, comprising 31-56% of the

Age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinitis pigmentosa, and diabetic retinopathy are the major retinal degenerative disorders, and each ultimately leads to irreversible vision loss. In this context, single-target therapies aimed at isolated pathways have delivered only modest benefits. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, the predominant bioactive components of goji berries, emerge as far more than simple antioxidants, functioning instead as orchestrators of interconnected signaling networks. Growing evidence shows that Lycium barbarum polysaccharides engages pathways well beyond redox c

Cadmium (Cd) is a persistent environmental heavy metal pollutant that has been an important issue in toxicology research worldwide. This toxic element is non-degradable and accumulates indefinitely in the ecosystem, and gradually accumulates in living organisms through nutrient transfer, ultimately posing a significant risk to the health of animals. The hepatic system is both the main target organ for Cd bioaccumulation and the metabolic center of organisms, and is particularly susceptible to heavy metal exposure. However, the underlying mechanism of whether LBP protects against Cd-induced liv

BACKGROUND: Vascular dysregulation is one of the major risk factors of glaucoma, and endothelin-1 (ET-1) may have a role in the pathogenesis of vascular-related glaucoma. Fruit extract from Lycium Barbarum (LB) exhibits anti-ageing and multitarget mechanisms in protecting retinal ganglion cells (RGC) in various animal models. To investigate the therapeutic efficacy of LB glycoproteins (LbGP) in ET-1 induced RGC degeneration, LbGP was applied under pre- and posttreatment conditions to an ET-1 mouse model. Retina structural and functional outcomes were characterised using clinical-based techniqu

Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) have been shown to exert an antiglycemic effect. Emerging evidence suggests that patients with hyperglycemia have a hypercontractility of duodenum, and targeting duodenal contraction of duodenum can be beneficial to glucose metabolism. However, it is unknown whether LBPs can improve glucose metabolism by regulating the hypercontractility of the duodenum. Our aim was to explore the effect of LBPs on duodenal contraction in prediabetic mice and also preliminarily investigate the mechanism. The results showed that LBPs improved glucose homeostasis by decreas

Oxidative stress is an imbalance between the increased production of reactive species and reduced antioxidant activity, which can cause a variety of disturbances including ocular diseases. Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBPs) are complex polysaccharides isolated from the fruit of L. barbarum, showing distinct roles in antioxidants. Moreover, it is relatively safe and non-toxic. In recent years, the antioxidant activities of LBPs have attracted remarkable attention. In order to illustrate its significance and underlying therapeutic value for vision, we comprehensively review the recent progre

Superfine pulverisation (SFP) pretreatment of Lycium barbarum L. leaves was performed to obtain highly crystalline cellulose. Compared with other common pulverisation methods, SFP enhanced cellulosic crystallinity by 18.3 % and 8.4 %, with and without post-acid treatments, respectively. XRD and solid-state NMR analyses showed that SFP facilitated the exposure of amorphous substances (i.e., hemicellulose and lignin) to NaOH and H2O2. Large amounts of silicon (5.5 %) and aluminium (2.1 %) were found to incorporate into the crystalline regions of SFP-produced cellulose. Further FTIR and thermogra

Lycium barbarum is a widely used Chinese herbal medicine prescription for protection of optic nerve. However, it remains unclear regarding the effects of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides, the main component of Lycium barbarum, on in vivo proliferation of adult ciliary body cells. In this study, adult rats were intragastrically administered low- and high-dose Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (1 and 10 mg/kg) for 35 days and those intragastrically administered phosphate buffered saline served as controls. The number of Ki-67-positive cells in rat ciliary body in the Lycium barbarum polysaccharides

Seven new neolignanamides (1-7), including two pairs of cis- and trans-isomers, and a new lignanamide (8) were isolated from the EtOAc-soluble fraction of an EtOH extract of the root bark of Lycium chinense, together with 22 known phenolic compounds (9-30), four of which were obtained from the genus Lycium for the first time. Compounds 5, 6, and 7 are unusual dimers having a rare connection mode between the two cinnamic acid amide units, while compounds 6, 7, and 8 are the first naturally occurring dimers derived from two dissimilar cinnamic acid amides. The cinnamic acid amides, neolignanamid

The vitrification cryopreservation of bovine oocytes is the cornerstone of modern animal breeding and genetic resource conservation. Cryogenic injury remains a major obstacle to efficient bovine oocyte vitrification, as it compromises both oocyte viability and subsequent developmental competence. In the present study, single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) was employed to characterize transcriptional alterations in vitrified immature bovine oocytes. Moreover, the potential protective role of Lycium barbarum polysaccharides (LBP) during the vitrification process was further investigated. The re

BACKGROUND: Building on our previous findings that Lycium barbarum ("goji" berry, wolfberry) extracts mitigate age-related bone loss and improve muscle endurance, a key translational question emerges regarding its practical consumption. This study therefore investigates whether a common daily intake mode-simply soaking a small amount in hot water as tea or eating dried fruits directly confers comparable bone and muscle protective effects.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine whether 3 different daily consumption regimens of L. barbarum confer bone and muscle protective effects comparable

Two new together with 32 known compounds were isolated from the leaves of Lycium barbarum. Their structures were elucidated using 1D and 2D NMR, HRESIMS, and ECD spectroscopic techniques. Compounds 1-34 were evaluated for their anti-rheumatoid arthritis activities in a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced MH7A cells inflammatory model. As a result, compounds 1-3, 6, 8, 10, 14, 17-19, 29 and 31 inhibited the activity of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and nitric oxide (NO) at concentrations 20 μM. Among them, compound 1 showed the best effectiveness, with inhibition rates of 46.7% for NO and 32.8% for

Slow transit constipation (STC) seriously affects the physical and mental health of patients. While the active ingredients of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) are widely used in the treatment of STC due to their low toxicity and side effects, the aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Lycium barbarum polysaccharide (LBP) on STC. The STC mouse model was induced by the compound diphenoxylate. Defecation, fecal moisture, and weight loss of the STC models were monitored. Gastrointestinal (GI) motility was assessed by intestinal propulsive rate, and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (
