Serotonergic and dopaminergic influence of the duration of embryogenesis and intracapsular locomotion of Lymnaea stagnalis L.

The role of the dopaminergic and serotonergic system was studied during the embryonic development of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis, with special attention to the effect of dopamine and serotonin as well as their agonists and antagonists on the rotation of the veliger larvae, and to the effect of precursors and inhibitors of the synthetizing enzymes on the duration of the embryonic life. Serotonin, D-lysergic acid diethylamide and N,N-dimethyltryptamine increased at a concentration of 1 microM the rotation by 50%, 90% and 87% respectively, and among them D-Lysergic acid diethylamide was foun

Larval development of Fasciola hepatica in experimental infections: variations with populations of Lymnaea truncatula.

A retrospective study was undertaken on 70 French populations of Lymnaea truncatula experimentally infected with Fasciola hepatica to determine whether or not susceptibility of snails to infection influenced redial and cercarial production. Results were compared with those obtained from two control populations, known for prevalences higher than 60% when experimentally infected with F. hepatica. In the 70 other populations examined, the prevalences ranged from 2 to 75%. In 55 of these populations, where the prevalence was more than 20%, a high proportion (50.1-56.8%) of snails died after cercar

Morphological and ecological studies on Lymnaea natalensis the snail vector of Fasciola gigantica in Egypt.

Lymnaea natalensis were collected from several localities in Giza Governorate (El-Mansouria, Kafr Hakim and The Nile). The collected snails were examined for cercarial shedding and measurement of shell was carried out using a virner caliper. A total of 217 Lymnaea was collected from all habitats and 24 snails were found to shed Fasciola gigantica cercariae with infection rate 11.1%. The ratio of shell height to shell width (H/W) ranged 1.7-2.1. The ratio between length of aperture to shell height (A/H) was almost constant ranged 0.7-0.8. While the ratio between length of aperture and shell wid

Prevalence of cercariae from Lymnaea stagnalis snails in a pond system in Southern Germany.

Lymnaea stagnalis snails were collected from 174 individual ponds of an extensive pond system in South Germany; 43,441 snails collected during 1980 2000 were examined for shedding cercariae. The species richness (at least 18 species of cercariae) and the high cercarial prevalence (at least 44.9%) may result from the high abundance and diversity of vertebrate and invertebrate hosts in the area. The mean prevalence (% +/- SEM) of most cercarial species increased from May-June to August-October, e.g. in Diplostomum spathaceum from 4.1% to 18.6%, in all echinostomatids from 5.6% to 18.0%, in Pseud

Fasciola hepatica: characteristics of infection in Lymnaea truncatula in relation to the number of miracidia at exposure.

Experimental infections of Lymnaea truncatula by Fasciola hepatica were carried out in three snail populations to determine whether the number of miracidia used for each snail at exposure (1, 2, 5, 10, or 20 per snail) had any influence on the characteristics of Fasciola infection and metacercarial production. The number of miracidia had a significant influence on snail survival at day 30 postexposure and the frequency of infected L. truncatula that died without shedding (NCS snails). The frequency of NCS snails, the growth of cercaria-shedding snails throughout the experiment, the time betwee

Chronic tributyltin exposure induces metabolic disruption in an invertebrate model animal, Lymnaea stagnalis.

Over the last 20 years, tributyltin (TBT) has been reported to cause metabolic disruption in both invertebrates and vertebrates, highlighting the need for further detailed analysis of its physiological effects. This study aimed to investigate the metabolic-disrupting effects of TBT from the behavioral to the molecular level. Adult specimens of the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) were exposed to an environmentally relevant concentration (100 ng L-1) of TBT for 21 days. After the chronic exposure, behavioral alterations as well as histological, cellular, and molecular changes were investiga

Feeding of Bait to Snail Lymnaea acuminata and Their Effect on Certain Enzyme in the Nervous Tissue.

Fascioliasis, a snail-borne parasitic zoonosis, has been recognized for a long time because of its major veterinary and human impact. Different Bait formulations were fed to the snail Lymnaea acuminata in clear glass aquaria having diameter of 30 cm. Snail attractant containing bait formulations was prepared from different binary combination (1 : 1 ratio) of carbohydrates (glucose, starch 10 mM) and amino acid (methionine, histidine 10 mM) in 100 ml of 2% agar solution + sublethal (20% and 60% of 24 h and 96 h LC50) doses of different molluscicides (eugenol, ferulic acid, umbelliferone, and li

Fascioliasis transmission by Lymnaea neotropica confirmed by nuclear rDNA and mtDNA sequencing in Argentina.

Fascioliasis is widespread in livestock in Argentina. Among activities included in a long-term initiative to ascertain which are the fascioliasis areas of most concern, studies were performed in a recreational farm, including liver fluke infection in different domestic animal species, classification of the lymnaeid vector and verification of natural transmission of fascioliasis by identification of the intramolluscan trematode larval stages found in naturally infected snails. The high prevalences in the domestic animals appeared related to only one lymnaeid species present. Lymnaeid and tremat

The presence of predators modifies the larval development of Fasciola hepatica in surviving Lymnaea truncatula.

Experimental infections of Lymnaea truncatula with Fasciola hepatica were performed to study the consequences of the presence of predators (sciomyzid larvae or zonitid snails) on the characteristics of larval F. hepatica development in surviving snails. Controls consisted of infected snails that were not subjected to predators. Compared to controls, the survival rate at day 30 post-exposure, the duration of cercarial shedding, and the number of cercariae shed by surviving snails were significantly lower when predators were present in snail breeding boxes, whatever the type of predator used. Prevalence of Haplometra cylindracea infection in three species of Lymnaea snails in central France.

Field investigations were performed over a 2- or 3-year period at five sites in central France to determine the prevalence of Haplometra cylindracea infection in three species of adult Lymnaea, and to compare it with that of Fasciola hepatica infection recorded in the same snails. L. glabra, L. palustris, and L. truncatula harboured Haplometra larval forms but the prevalence of this infection varied according to the site and snail species studied. The prevalences in May ranged over 0-66.9% in L. glabra, 3-7.7% in L. palustris, and 0-31.5% in L. truncatula. The mean intensity of H. cylindracea

The role of cAMP in regulation of electrical activity of the neuroendocrine caudodorsal cells of Lymnaea stagnalis.

The neuroendocrine caudodorsal cells (CDCs) of the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis release a number of peptides, including the ovulation hormone, caudodorsal cell hormone (CDCH), during a period of high electrical activity (the CDC-discharge). Earlier studies have shown that during the CDC-discharge adenylate cyclase activity is increased, and that the cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) analogue 8-chlorophenylthio (8-CPT)-cAMP induces exocytosis and release of peptides from the CDCs. Here, we have investigated the role of cAMP, adenylate cyclase and phosphodiesterase in determining the state o

[Sensitivity of the cholinoreceptive membrane of Lymnaea stagnalis neurons to mono- and bisquaternary ammonium compounds].

The depolarizing potency of polymethylene-bis-trimethylammonium and alkyl-trimenthylammonium compounds with 3-10 methylene groups was studied on the identified giant central neurons of gastropod mollusc Limnaea stagnalis using intracellular microelectrode technique. The bisquaternary salts with 4-7 methylene groups were inactive while the mononitrogen analogues showed cholinomimetic activity. The similar results were obtained by other authors on Vertebrate skeletal muscles with substances studied. The possible explanations of this fact are suggested.

Intense Locomotion Enhances Oviposition in the Freshwater Mollusc Lymnaea stagnalis: Cellular and Molecular Correlates.

Intense species-specific locomotion changes the behavioural and cognitive states of various vertebrates and invertebrates. However, whether and how reproductive behaviour is affected by previous increased motor activity remains largely unknown. We addressed this question using a model organism, the pond snail Lymnaea stagnalis. Intense crawling in shallow water for two hours had previously been shown to affect orienting behaviour in a new environment as well as the state of the serotonergic system in L. stagnalis. We found that the same behaviour resulted in an increased number of egg clutches

Chaetogaster limnaei K von Baer 1872 on Lymnaea tomentosa: ingestion of Fasciola hepatica cercariae.

The fresh water mollusc, Lymnaea tomentosa, the intermediate host of the liver fluke is heavily infested under natural conditions with ectocommensal annelid, Chaetogaster limnaei. These annelids which destroy the larval stages of Fasciola hepatica have been observed in the laboratory. The association of C. limnaei with the snail intermediate host is of value in exploiting a control measure against economically important liver fluke disease.

Experimental data from the development of Lymnaea stagnalis embryo test for chemicals hazard assessment.

This study aimed to contribute to the development of an embryo-test using the gastropod Lymnaea stagnalis, identified by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) as a potential invertebrate test animal model. Together with the Potamopyrgus antipodarum, were the first mollusc models to be included in the organization testing guidelines. The focus was on validating an embryo toxicity test to cover the sensitive embryogenesis phase and on obtaining testing information on all of the model life cycle stages, contributing to close an identified gap within this context. Allopatric combination of Fasciola hepatica and Lymnaea truncatula is more efficient than sympatric ones.

Parasites are capable of rapid evolutionary changes relative to their hosts, due to short life cycle, short generation time, and high fecundity. The direction of the evolution of parasite virulence can be studied in cross-transfer experiments, combining hosts and parasites from different localities, and comparing the outcome of established (sympatric and potentially locally adapted) and novel (allopatric) combinations of hosts and parasites. We aimed to compare the compatibility with snails hosts, the infectivity of metacercariae in rabbits and rats, and the fitness among different combination

Rapid growth of Lymnaea viridis, the intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, under laboratory conditions.

Reported in this communication is a unusually rapid growth of Lymnaea viridis, the intermediate host of Fasciola hepatica, maintained in the laboratory for experimental purposes. When the snails were fed on blue-green algae at about 20 degrees C, they attained a shell length of 12 mm in 37 days from the date of hatching. The snails began laying eggs from 18 to 24 days following hatching.

Effect of tributyltin exposure on the embryonic development and behavior of a molluscan model species, Lymnaea stagnalis.

The presence of the organotin compound tributyltin (TBT) in aquatic ecosystems has been a serious environmental problem for decades. Although a number of studies described the negative impact of TBT on mollusks at different levels, investigations connected to its potential effects during embryogenesis have been neglected. For a better understanding of the impact of TBT on mollusks, in the present study, embryos of previously TBT-treated or not treated specimens of the great pond snail (Lymnaea stagnalis) were exposed to 100 ng L-1 TBT from egg-laying (single-cell stage) until hatching.
