Lymphangioma (LA) is a rare benign tumour of the lymphatic tissue, most common in the neck and head, and clinically manifests itself mostly in childhood. Within this group, intra-abdominal and retroperitonal LA are the rarest tumours, especially when occurring in adults. We report four LAs localized in the retroperitoneum of patients aged between 28 and 72 years. We present 2 cases of solitary cystic lymphangioma of the retroperitoneum. The non-specific clinical picture is demonstrated again but the pathologic features of both tumors are characteristic. Surgical treatment was successful in both instances.

Retroperitoneal cystic lymphangiomas are rare benign tumors, and their occurrence during pregnancy is exceptionally uncommon. Cystic lymphangioma is a rare and benign lymphatic malformation found most often in the first two years of life. Clinical manifestations are diverse and depend on size and site of the lesion. The most frequently affected sites are cervicofacial and axillary areas. The retroperitoneal form is rare. Diagnosis requires imaging but can only be confirmed on the basis of an anatomopathological examination. The treatment of choice is complete surgical removal. Intra-abdominal cystic lymphangioma is a rare dysembryogenetic tumour. Although laparoscopic treatment may be feasible and has been reported in the literature, the extension of the mass to the retroperitoneum can make a minimally invasive surgical approach difficult or impossible. We describe the case of a patient with lymphangioma with retroperitoneal extension who underwent successful surgical therapy.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Prenatally diagnosed cystic lymphangioma (CL) is often associated with chromosomal anomalies, hydrops fetalis, and, in the case of cervical CL, occasionally respiratory distress just after birth. Often it is difficult to treat prenatally diagnosed CL because of the large size and associated symptoms.

Lymphangiomas of the pancreas are very rare benign tumors of lymphatic origin, accounting for less than 1% of these neoplasms. We report a case of a 55-year-old woman who presented with a palpable mass in the left abdomen. Sixteen cases of cervical cystic lymphangioma are reported; all but two were present at birth. Intra-oral extensions were detected in five and three of these caused macroglossia resulting in partial respiratory obstruction. Mal-development of the jaws and consequent dental malocclusion is a possible complication of the condition. In planning the treatment of such patients, maxillo-facial surgeons and orthodontists should be consulted at an early stage. The treatment of choice is complete excision, but where vital structures are involved repeated sub-total excisions are advocated.

Splenic cystic lymphangioma is a very rare condition. It occurs commonly in children in whom it is often an incidental imaging finding. In the absence of histologic confirmation, it usually mimics hydatid disease and other cystic vascular proliferations of the spleen. We herein present a patient referred to our clinic with the complaints of flatulence and left upper quadrant abdominal pain who was diagnosed to have pancreatic cystic neoplasia radiologically.
