Complex karyotype in a case of cutaneous lymphangiosarcoma associated with chronic lymphedema of the lower limb.

Lymphangiosarcoma is a rare malignant neoplasm of endothelial cells. The term is used to describe an angiosarcoma associated with chronic lymphedema. The skin of the head and neck region is the most common site of origin. Rather few cytogenetic studies on lymphangiosarcoma are reported in the literature. We here describe a case of an 87-year-old woman, with a history of recurring lymphangitis and with an ulcerated nodular lesion of the leg. The histological diagnosis was a malignant neoplasm of vascular origin, with the morphological and immunohistochemical features of a lymphangiosarcoma. A s

Lymphangiosarcoma of the pubic region: a rare complication arising in congenital non-hereditary lymphedema.

Lymphangiosarcoma is a rare, aggressive, vascular neoplasm arising in chronic congenital or acquired lymphedema. Although it is most frequently associated with post-mastectomy lymphedema (Stewart-Treves's syndrome), lymphangiosarcoma can exceptionally arise in congenital hereditary lymphedema (Milroy's syndrome and Meige's syndrome) and non-hereditary lymphedema (congenital, praecox or forme tarde lymphedemas). We report a case of lymphangiosarcoma of the pubic region, supported by immunohistochemical studies, in a 42-year-old woman affected by congenital, non-hereditary lymphedema of the left

Lymphangiosarcoma in chronic lymphedema that followed dissection of the groin in surgical management of a malignant melanoma.

A 41-year-old white man who had a malignant melanoma in the left lumbar area was treated by wide excision and dissection of the ipsilateral inguinal lymph nodes. Progression and irreversible lymphedema of the left lower extremity developed. Fourteen years after the surgery, numerous purplish plaques and nodules developed on the left leg and thigh. Histologic examination by conventional and electron microscopy yielded the diagnosis of angiosarcoma. The patient died 18 months after the diagnosis was made.

Case Report: Cutaneous Pleomorphic Lymphangiosarcoma in a Dog Exhibiting Features of Human Composite Hemangioendothelioma.

Background: Angiosarcomas are a broad category of vascular origin neoplasms that are poorly characterized in veterinary species. Lymphangiosarcoma (LAS) is an uncommon type of angiosarcoma reported in humans and canines arising from lymphatic endothelium. LAS can be differentiated from other angiosarcomas in dogs based on expression of Prospero-related homeobox gene-1 (PROX-1) or lymphatic vessel endothelial receptor-1 (LYVE-1). Composite hemangioendothelioma (CHE) is a rare angiosarcoma subtype described in people and characterized by a variable biologic behavior and infrequent metastasis. Th

Lymphangiosarcoma of the arm presenting with lymphedema in a woman 16 years after mastectomy: a case report.

Lymphangiosarcoma following breast cancer is a relatively rare entity, with around 300 cases so far reported worldwide. Affecting the long term survivors of breast cancer, lymphangiosarcoma (Stewart-Traves Syndrome) has a high mortality rate. Since lympedema following radical mastectomy or axillary clearance and radiotherapy seems to be the main predisposing factor, further research regarding modifications in the surgical technique of axillary nodes dissection as well as the development of new chemotherapeutic agents effective in lymphangiosarcoma are required.

Lymphangiosarcoma, a Rare Complication of Lymphostasis: An Observational Study on the Role of the Physiotherapist in Early Recognition and Medical Referral.

Lymphangiosarcoma is a rare, malignant angiosarcoma that primarily develops in limbs with chronic lymphedema and presents with dermal lesions. Due to a 5-year survival rate of 22.4%, early detection and treatment are critical for improving prognosis. This study assessed physiotherapists' skills in recognizing suspicious dermal lesions in lymphedema patients with a focus on lymphangiosarcoma. An 11-question online survey was created using Google Forms that included academic training, practical experience, frequency of lymphatic treatments, ability to recognize suspicious dermal lesions, referra

Autophagy-dependent expression of osteopontin and its downstream Stat3 signaling contributes to lymphatic malformation progression to lymphangiosarcoma.

Lymphatic malformation (LM) is a vascular anomaly from lymphatic endothelial cells (ECs), and a fraction of the patients could progress to the deadly malignant lymphangiosarcoma (LAS). Using genetic tools to delete an essential autophagy gene Rb1cc1/FIP200 or its mutation specifically blocking its autophagy function, we demonstrated that autophagy inhibition abrogated LM progression to LAS although not affecting LM formation in our recently developed mouse model of LAS. Analysis of the mouse models in vivo and vascular tumor cells in vitro showed that autophagy inhibition reduced vascular tumo

Lymphangiosarcoma arising after 33 years within a background of chronic filariasis: a case report with review of literature.

Cutaneous angiosarcoma or lymphangiosarcoma represents an uncommon aggressive tumor known to arise on a background of chronic lymphedema secondary to various etiologies, principally following surgery or irradiation. There have been rarely reported cases of angiosarcoma following infective conditions that eventuate with lymphatic stasis. We report a case of angiosarcoma arising after 33 years within a background of filariasis. Awareness of this association can lead to early diagnosis and appropriate treatment of this potentially fatal malignant tumor.

Constitutive Activation of mTORC1 in Endothelial Cells Leads to the Development and Progression of Lymphangiosarcoma through VEGF Autocrine Signaling.

Angiosarcoma/lymphangiosarcoma is a rare malignancy with poor prognosis. We generated a mouse model with inducible endothelial-cell-specific deletion of Tsc1 to examine mTORC1 signaling in lymphangiosarcoma. Tsc1 loss increased retinal angiogenesis in neonates and led to endothelial proliferative lesions from vascular malformations to vascular tumors in adult mice. Sustained mTORC1 signaling was required for lymphangiosarcoma development and maintenance. Increased VEGF expression in tumor cells was seen, and blocking autocrine VEGF signaling abolished vascular tumor development and growth. We

Paresis in an Asian small clawed otter (Aonyx cinereus) associated with vertebral and ischial osteolysis caused by a malignant lymphangiosarcoma.

A 10-yr-old male intact Asian small clawed otter (Aonyx cinerus) was presumptively diagnosed by histopathology and immunohistochemistry with lymphangiosarcoma after bony destruction of the ischium and spinal column from local tumor invasion had caused progressive signs of hind limb lameness and paresis/paralysis, which led to humane euthanasia. At necropsy, the primary tumor was identified as a flocculent mass present under the caudal lumbar vertebrae. Multiple nerves were seen to run from the spinal cord into the wall of the mass. This mass had locally invaded the surrounding muscle, vertebra

Lymphangiosarcoma in a 3.5-year-old Bullmastiff bitch with vaginal prolapse, primary lymph node fibrosis and other congenital defects.

Lymphangiosarcoma is an extremely rare tumour in dogs with only 16 cases reported in the literature. Lymphoedema, which may be primary due to defects in the lymphatic system, or secondary to various other pathologies, often precedes malignancy. Of the 16 canine reports, only 1 dog was confirmed as having had prior primary lymphoedema due to aplasia of the popliteal lymph nodes. A case of lymphangiosarcoma is described in a 3.5-year-old purebred, Bullmastiff bitch which presented with vaginal blood 'spotting' for 3 weeks after cessation of oestrus, during which intromission by the male had been

Stewart-Treves syndrome: Case report and literature review.

Lymphangiosarcoma, or Stewart-Treves Syndrome (STS), is a very rare skin angiosarcoma with poor prognosis, which usually affects the upper limbs of patients who underwent breast cancer surgery, including axillary dissection followed by radiotherapy (RT). Cutaneous lymphangiosarcomas, which account for approximately 5% of all angiosarcomas, usually originate in the limb with chronic lymphedema. Lymphatic blockade is involved in the onset of STS. RT contributes indirectly to an increased risk of developing STS by causing axillary-node sclerosis and resulting in a lymphatic blockade and lymphedem

Hemangiosarcoma of the left hand in a patient with the rare combination of Maffucci's and Stewart Treves syndrome.

We describe a patient with the previously unseen combination of Maffucci's and Stewart Treves syndrome who presented with an angiosarcoma of the hand. Maffucci's syndrome is characterized by the presence of multiple enchondroma and soft tissue hemangioma. The syndrome is a rare nonhereditary condition with a usual onset in childhood. Malignant transformations are a common feature of this syndrome. In 1948, Stewart and Treves first described six cases of lymphangiosarcoma after radical mastectomy. This syndrome is an unusual form of angiosarcoma occuring as a complication of lymphedema. Chronic

Stewart-Treves Syndrome on the Lower Extremity Associated to Idiopathic Chronic Lymphedema Visualized on FDG PET/CT.

Angiosarcomas are highly malignant and rare tumors of vascular or lymphatic endothelial cell origin with a poor prognosis. Lymphangiosarcoma associated with chronic lymphedema is known as Stewart-Treves syndrome. Stewart-Treves syndrome is primarily described in patients with lymphedema of an upper extremity occurring after breast cancer surgery including radical axillary lymph node dissection and subsequent radiotherapy. It is rarely described in the presence of idiopathic chronic lymphedema of the lower extremities. We present a case of lymphangiosarcoma visualized on F-FDG PET/CT, where Ste

Stewart Treves Syndrome.

Stewart-Treves Syndrome is characterized by the presence of lymphangiosarcoma on limb extremities. Rare, it occurs in 0.5% of patients who have undergone radical mastectomy with axillary node dissection. The main cause is chronic lymphedema with endothelial and lymphatic differentiation, with no direct relationship to breast cancer. Seven years after a radical right-side mastectomy with lymph node dissection and adjuvant therapy, the patient developed a lesion on her right arm. The dermatological examination revealed an erythematous nodule with bleeding surface on chronic right forearm lymphed

Stewart-Treves syndrome. A lethal complication of postmastectomy lymphedema and regional immune deficiency.

Lymphangiosarcoma is a fatal complication of postmastectomy lymphedema. The pathogenesis of lymphangiosarcoma in chronic lymphedema is a combination of two factors. First, the edematous region responds in a manner similar to "immunologically privileged sites." Second, because of its anatomic and physiologic properties, it is a favorable site for the development of mutant cell populations for reasons that are not fully understood. As a result, these mutant cells, with their genetically nonidentical antigens, escape recognition by the host's impaired immune surveillance mechanism. The failure to
