Lymphatic System Transfer for Lymphedema Treatment: Transferring the Lymph Nodes with Their Lymphatic Vessels.

BACKGROUND: Vascularized lymph node transfer is the most common physiological procedure indicated for severe lymphedema. We describe a new physiological treatment strategy for lymphedema, lymphatic system transfer (LYST), which comprises transfer of the vascularized afferent lymphatic vessels along with their draining lymph nodes. METHODS: All patients undergoing LYST for treatment of lymphedema from 2017 to 2018 were identified. Patient demographics, intraoperative factors, and postoperative outcomes were reviewed. RESULTS: Three patients underwent LYST. Average patient age and body mass in

Viral Infection and Dissemination Through the Lymphatic System.

Many viruses induce viremia (virus in the blood) and disseminate throughout the body via the bloodstream from the initial infection site. However, viruses must often pass through the lymphatic system to reach the blood. The lymphatic system comprises a network of vessels distinct from blood vessels, along with interconnected lymph nodes (LNs). The complex network has become increasingly appreciated as a crucial host factor that contributes to both the spread and control of viral infections. Viruses can enter the lymphatics as free virions or along with migratory cells. Once virions arrive in t

Transport and Immune Functions of the Lymphatic System.

Two major functions of the lymphatic system are the reabsorption of excess interstitial fluid/protein and the coordination of immune cell interactions and trafficking. Specialized junctions between lymphatic endothelial cells optimize reabsorption. The spontaneous contractions of collecting vessels provide active lymph propulsion. One-way valves prevent backflow, and chemokine gradients direct the migration of immune cells. Specialized compartments within the lymph node facilitate antigen-immune cell interactions to produce innate and acquired immunity. Lymphatic injury and/or mutations in gen

[Diseases of the pulmonary lymphatic system in children].

Diseases of the lymphatic system in children include a group of exceptional conditions difficult to manage. The anatomy of lymphatic system is complex in the lung. Variable from one subject to another, its complex physiology plays an important role in air-blood exchanges occurring in the lung. In the pulmonary interstitium and in the pleura, the lymphatic system acts like an overflow valve capable of regulating variations in interstitial fluid. The presence or development of dysplasic lymphatics causes leakage, dilatation, and reflux of the lymph through incontinent valves leading to chylothor

[Lymphangioleiomyomatosis--a rare disease of the lymphatic system].

Lymphangioleiomyomatosis is a rare disease with proliferation of smooth muscle cells within the lymphatics, mediastinal and retroperitoneal lymph nodes and in the lungs. The clinical symptoms are increasing dyspnea, chylous effusion, intestinal obstruction and thoracic or abdominal pain. The authors report the case of a 42-year-old woman who primarily suffered from thoracic pain, dyspnea and chylous effusion. In further examinations we discovered a leftsided retroperitoneal tumor and a tumor in the mesentery. The diagnostic difficulties experienced are described and the necessity of explorativ

Compartmentalized ocular lymphatic system mediates eye-brain immunity.

The eye, an anatomical extension of the central nervous system (CNS), exhibits many molecular and cellular parallels to the brain. Emerging research demonstrates that changes in the brain are often reflected in the eye, particularly in the retina1. Still, the possibility of an immunological nexus between the posterior eye and the rest of the CNS tissues remains unexplored. Here, studying immune responses to herpes simplex virus in the brain, we observed that intravitreal immunization protects mice against intracranial viral challenge. This protection extended to bacteria and even tumours, allo

Hepatic lymphatic vascular system in health and disease.

In recent years, significant advances have been made in the study of lymphatic vessels with the identification of their specific markers and the development of research tools that have accelerated our understanding of their role in tissue homeostasis and disease pathogenesis in many organs. Compared to other organs, the lymphatic system in the liver is understudied despite its obvious importance for hepatic physiology and pathophysiology. In this review, we describe fundamental aspects of the hepatic lymphatic system and its role in a range of liver-related pathological conditions such as port

Specialized Pro-Resolving Mediators and the Lymphatic System.

Diminished lymphatic function and abnormal morphology are common in chronic inflammatory diseases. Recent studies are investigating whether it is possible to target chronic inflammation by promoting resolution of inflammation, in order to enhance lymphatic function and attenuate disease. Resolution of inflammation is an active process regulated by bioactive lipids known as specialized pro-resolving mediators (SPMs). SPMs can modulate leukocyte migration and function, alter cytokine/chemokine release, modify autophagy, among other immune-related activities. Here, we summarize the role of the ly

The lymphatic vascular system of the mouse head.

Histological studies of the lymphatic vascular system in adult mice are hampered because bones cannot be sectioned properly. Here, we decalcified the heads of 14-day-old mice, embedded them in paraffin and stained resultant serial sections with the lymphendothelial-specific antibodies Lyve-1 and Podoplanin. We show that the tissues with the highest lymphatic vascular density are the dermis and the oral mucous membranes. In contrast, the nasal mucous membrane is devoid of lymphatics, except for its most basal parts below the vomeronasal organ. The inferior nasal turbinate contains numerous lymp

Lymphosome concept: Anatomical study of the lymphatic system.

The gross anatomical study of the lymphatic system in humans and animals has been suspended for almost 100 years. This article introduces the author's technique for investigating the lymphatic system using the concept of the lymphosome. In revisiting the anatomical study of the lymphatic system, our updated knowledge can potentially be utilized either to reassure surgeons about their current procedures in the surgical management of cancers and lymphedema or assist them to refine them. [The Importance of the Lymphatic and the Glymphatic System for Glaucoma].

Normal tension glaucoma is a variant of primary open angle glaucoma. It is characterized by normal intraocular pressure. Although there are several pathophysiological explanations (e. g. vascular dysregulation, the role of the lamina cribrosa), none of these explanations can fully explain its pathophysiology. The optic nerve is a white matter tract of the brain. It is surrounded by cerebrospinal fluid on its whole length. Neuroradiological examinations hint at a neurodegenerative origin of normal tension glaucoma. Impaired cerebrospinal fluid dynamics and reduced clearance of Aβ amyloid might

Lymphatic system of the thyroid gland in the rat.

Intraglandular thyroid lymph vessels in the rat were studied by qualitative and quantitative analyses in order to obtain information regarding their structure, distribution, relationships, and possible mechanisms of lymph formation. Ultrastructurally, the lymphatic vessels were similar to those described in other organs. The volume density of the lymphatic vessels was 0.007, the profile density 5.68 mm2 and the maximum diameter 17.87 nm. Ultrastructurally, visible transport pathways across the vessels appear to be represented by intracytoplasmic vesicles and channels between endothelial cells.

The Epitrochlear and Humeral Lymphatic Pathway: Deep Lymphatic System Compensation After Axillary Lymph Node Dissection.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Superficial-to-deep lymphatic drainage has been proposed as a mechanism to reduce an individual's risk of developing breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL). The epitrochlear-humeral pathway provides superficial-to-deep lymphatic drainage and may be preferentially recruited when the superficial lymphatic system becomes inadequate. We evaluated the presence or absence of epitrochlear-humeral lymph node drainage in breast cancer survivors post-axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) who did not develop BCRL. METHODS: Female breast cancer survivors without BCRL after ALN

Microphysiological Systems of Lymphatics and Immune Organs.

Microphysiological systems (MPS) that incorporate engineered blood vasculatures have enabled new opportunities to study human physiology and disease, offering platforms for drug development, tissue modeling, and regenerative medicine. However, most human tissues also contain an equally complex yet underrepresented secondary vascular network, the lymphatic system. Lymphatics play indispensable roles in interstitial fluid drainage, immune cell trafficking, and antigen presentation, and are central to the pathophysiology of diseases such as lymphedema, chronic inflammation, and cancer metastasis.
