Atypical cells resembling Reed-Sternberg cells are a characteristic histologic feature of lymphomatoid papulosis. Thus far no consistent data are available on the nature of these cells, or a possible antigenic relationship between them and Reed-Sternberg cells. Twenty-four biopsy specimens from 14 patients with lymphomatoid papulosis were immunolabeled with antibodies against Ki-1 and other Reed-Sternberg cell-associated antigens. In all cases a proportion of the large, atypical cells expressed the Ki-1 antigen. In contrast, in 20 biopsy specimens of benign inflammatory skin lesions or mycosis

Seven patients with lymphomatoid papulosis were treated with solutions of topical carmustine, a nitrosourea compound. Recently used schedules have employed 10 mg of carmustine in dilute alcohol applied to the total skin surface daily for four to 17 weeks (total dosage, 280 to 1,180 mg). All patients experienced a rapid reduction in the number and size of lesions. Maintenance therapy consisted of local applications of carmustine (2 to 4 mg/mL of 95% ethanol) to individual new papules. This method was effective in suppressing disease activity and reduced by half the average life cycle of individ

During PUVA treatment a 66-year-old woman with mycosis fungoides in stage III suddenly developed widespread papulonodular lesions of alarming clinical and histological appearance. There was rapid spontaneous and complete regression of the eruptions, which was probably an expression of transient lymphomatoid papulosis in connection with MF.

Lymphomatoid papulosis is a chronic CD30-positive cutaneous lymphoproliferative disorder that is characterized by recurring red-brown necrotic papules. It exhibits a wide spectrum of histopathologic findings and is often associated with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas. Six different histological subtypes have been classified by the WHO, but there is limited understanding regarding rare histopathologic variants. We describe a 51-year-old man who presented with recurring, necrotic papules for 6 years that progressed to involve the face, scalp, trunk, axilla, and scrotum. Histopathology demonstrated s

Lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) is a rare skin disease with a benign course but a malignant histologic appearance based on atypical lymphocytes. Waldenström's macroglobulinemia (WM) is a diffuse infiltration of the bone marrow by cells that synthesize IgM immunoglobulins. A 46-year-old female presented with a two year history of weakness, fatigue, anemia, and recurring multiple erythematous papules and nodules in the skin. The skin biopsy showed pleomorphic lymphoid cells with atypical mitoses permeated by a diffuse dermal infiltrate of normal appearing lymphocytes. The neoplastic cells were posi

Lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) is a rare cutaneous lymphoproliferative condition characterized by a chronic, recurrent eruption of papules and nodules that undergo spontaneous regression. The disorder is usually clinically benign; with a minority of cases progressing to malignant lymphoma. LyP is divided into two subtypes based on histologic appearance. Type A resembles Hodgkin's disease with up to 20% of large CD30+ lymphocytes. Type B resembles mycosis fungoides showing an infiltrate of CD4+ lymphocytes and scattered CD30+ cells. Clinically LyP often resembles pityriasis lichenoides et varioli

BACKGROUND: Lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) is a chronic dermatosis that histologically resembles malignant lymphoma. Thus far, only a few cases of LyP have been characterized in detail with regard to immunophenotype, genotype, and karyotype.
OBJECTIVE: Our purpose was to study seven patients with LyP and compare the results to those reported in the literature.
METHODS: Skin biopsy specimens were analyzed by frozen section immunohistochemical and molecular biologic techniques. Cytogenetic analysis was also performed in three cases.
RESULTS: The atypical lymphoid cells consisted of activated he

A survey is given on 23 patients (10 of our own, 13 reported in personal communications and in the literature) suffering from lymphoproliferative diseases and treated with acyclovir (ACV). In 5 patients (3 of 18 with cutaneous T-cell lymphomas, 2 of 5 with lymphomatoid papulosis) partial remission could be achieved. Since herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus and viruses like Epstein-Barr and varicella-zoster do not play an etiologic role and since HTLV-I virus, due to its lack of thymidine kinase, cannot activate ACV, the following mechanisms should be discussed regarding the possible effecti

Two different characteristic types of lymphomatoid papulosis (type A and type B) can be histologically distinguished, that represent the ends of a spectrum. In the present report, two patients are described. One patient with both lymphomatoid papulosis type A and type B lesions for more than 25 years developed Hodgkin's disease (nodular sclerosing type) in the para-aortic and para-iliac lymph nodes. Histologic examination of the skin lesions in the second patient, who had Hodgkin's disease (nodular sclerosing type) in many supradiaphragmatic lymph nodes, showed the characteristic features of l

Lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) is a primary cutaneous CD30+ lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by a chronic and self-healing recurrent cluster of erythematous papules or nodules on the skin of the trunk and/or extremities. The disease has an indolent clinical course with spontaneous regression or waxing and waning clinical evolution. The histopathologic spectrum of LyP is vast and may show few to numerous atypical cells immersed in a mild to intense inflammatory background. The backbone for the diagnosis is the positivity for CD30, which is one of the criteria to define this group of lym

The histopathological characteristics of lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) vary. Currently, 6 subtypes have been reported, including a new subtype with perifollicular infiltration and different degrees of folliculotropism of CD30+ atypical lymphocytes, known as follicular LyP. However, LyP pathologically manifesting with folliculotropism, eccrinotropism and neurotropism has been rarely reported. We present a case of LyP showing CD30+ atypical lymphocytes around the hair follicle, eccrine gland and nerve fiber, with varying degrees of infiltrates. The pathological characteristics of folliculotropism

A 43-year-old male with a 23-year history of small-plaque-type parapsoriasis developed a chronic recurrent self-healing papulonodular and tumoral cutaneous eruption. The microscopic findings were consistent with eosinophilic histiocytosis. Immunohistochemical and ultrastructural studies revealed a population of T lymphocytes, eosinophils and monocyte-macrophage cells in the dermal infiltrate. These findings confirm the similarities between eosinophilic histiocytosis and lymphomatoid papulosis suggesting that the former may be a clinicopathologic variant of the latter.

Electron microscopic studies of biopsy specimens from a patient with lymphomatoid papulosis were performed. In the epidermis, infiltrating lymphoid cells, many of which had highly convoluted nuclei, were revealed to come into close contact to increased Langerhans' cells but did not accumulate to form microabscesses. In the dermis, Langerhans' cells with rather small numbers of Birbeck granules were scattered among the thick infiltration of mononuclear cells showing close apposition with lymphoid cells. Some macrophages contacted the Langerhans' cells and lymphoid cells were also observed. On o

A review of sixty-four biopsies from sixteen patients with lymphomatoid papulosis revealed two characteristic histological types (type A and type B), which also had a different clinical behaviour. In lymphomatoid papulosis type A lesions, four histological patterns corresponding with the age of the lesion could be distinguished. Such a relationship was not found in type B lesions. The findings of transitional forms in some biopsy specimens, showing histological features of both type A and type B, and the presence of both types in different but concurrent lesions, suggests that these two types

Lymphomatoid papulosis, keratoacanthoma, juvenile melanoma, and atypical fibroxanthoma are clinically benign yet histologically malignant cutaneous disorders which have been designated as pseudomalignancies of the skin. Other disorders which may be classified as pseudomalignant include angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia, nodular fasciitis, lymphocytoma cutis, actinic reticuloid and, occasionally, insect bites. A patient with lymphomatoid papulosis is reported and the pseudomalignancies of the skin are briefly reviewed.

Lymphomatoid papulosis (LyP) is a CD30+ T-cell lymphoproliferative disorder rarely involving mucosa, where it may mimic aggressive lymphomas. This case highlights its chronic relapsing course, diagnostic challenges with ALK-negative anaplastic T-cell lymphoma, and the importance of long-term follow-up despite a favorable prognosis.
