Case report: Canine distemper virus infection as a cause of central nervous system disease in a Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx).

The Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) represents an endangered species with only small populations remaining in Central Europe. Knowledge about the threat posed by potential infectious agents to these animals is crucial for informing ongoing protection measures. Canine distemper virus (CDV) is known to have a wide host range with infection reported in many mammalian species including several lynx species (Lynx pardinus, Lynx canadensis, Lynx rufus), but is an extremely rare finding in the Eurasian lynx. The present report describes a case of a Eurasian lynx showing central nervous signs, including apa

Prevalence of Trichinella nativa in lynx (Felis lynx) from Alaska, 1988-1993.

Lynx (Felis lynx) carcasses were collected during the 1989 to 1990 through 1992 to 1993 trapping seasons in Alaska (USA). Seven areas were represented. Tongue samples were removed from 1,065 carcasses. Specimens were examined for the presence of Trichinella nativa larvae by means of enzymatic digestion. Overall prevalence was 21%. Both prevalence and number of larvae per gram of host tissue were directly related to age of the host. Age-specific prevalence ranged from 4% for kittens up to 59% for lynx 5 yr of age and older. For infected lynx, intensity ranged from 0.27 larvae per gram of host t

Endemic and widespread exposure to Sarcoptes scabiei in the threatened Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus).

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is one of the most endangered feline species in the world, and different infectious diseases, such as feline leukaemia virus, Aujeszky's disease or sarcoptic mange, have long posed a significant threat to its survival. Severe clinical disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei have been reported in the Iberian lynx, however, the extent of S. scabiei infestations/infections in this species is unknown. In this context, we aimed (1) to assess S. scabiei exposure in Iberian lynx populations, and (2) to identify potential risk factors associated with parasite exposure. Bet

Disease Surveillance during the Reintroduction of the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) in Southwestern Spain.

The restoration of Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) populations in Extremadura (Southwestern Spain) have been carried out since 2014. One of the measures to ensure the success of this program is to examine the effects that diseases may have on reintroduction. Since diseases may be greatly located at certain sites because of the specific ecological requirements of the pathogens and/or vectors, reintroduced individuals may present a risk of infection once released. To determine which pathogens the reintroduced individuals may encounter, we performed a molecular and sero-epidemiological survey in rei

First report of an intraerythrocytic small piroplasm in wild Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus).

A wild injured Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) was taken from the Sierra Morena population. During the health check small intraerythrocytic piroplasms, morphologically indistinguishable from other feline piroplasms, were observed in Wright-Giemsa-stained blood films. Amplification by polymerase chain reaction of a portion of the 18S nuclear small subunit (NSS) rRNA gene and sequencing revealed similarity of the unknown organism with sequences obtained from Pallas's cat from Mongolia and from a domestic cat in Spain. In a retrospective (1993-2003) study of 50 Iberian lynx tissue samples, no amplif

Patterns of ovarian and luteal activity in captive and wild Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis).

Canada lynx face some unique breeding restrictions, which may have implications for population viability and captive management. The goal of this study was to improve our understanding of basic reproductive physiology in Canada lynx. Using fecal hormone metabolite analysis, we established normative patterns of fecal estrogen (fE) and progestagen (fP) expression in captive and wild female Canada lynx. Our results indicate that Canada lynx have persistent corpora lutea, which underlie their uncharacteristic fP profiles compared to other felids. Thus, fP are not useful for diagnosing pregnancy in

Histopathological and immunohistochemical findings in lymphoid tissues of the endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus).

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is the most threatened wild feline in the world. Little is known about the diseases and pathology that affect this animal. The aim of this study was to evaluate the histopathological status of the peripheral lymphoid tissues and thymus of Iberian lynxes necropsied between 1998 and 2003. Seventeen animals including females (n=8) and males (n=9), age range of 10 months to 16 years, with different causes of death were histopathologically and immunohistochemically (anti-CD3, CD79, MAC387, CD68) studied. Identification of Non-Tuberculous Mycobacteria in Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus) and Their Impact on Its Health.

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) population has been increasing in recent years thanks to the collaboration of several associations within the framework of the Life Lynxconnect project, which promotes captive breeding for the subsequent release of specimens into the environment. It is therefore important to know their population status, the diseases to which these animals are exposed, and how they affect their repopulation. In this sense, this study aims to study how the presence of mycobacteria affects the lynx population in Extremadura (southwest of Spain). To this end, blood samples, trache

First Description of a Carnivore Protoparvovirus Associated with a Clinical Case in the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus).

One of the main threats for the survival of the Iberian lynx is infectious disease. Feline parvoviruses cause often fatal diseases in cats and have been isolated from different species of Felidae and other carnivores. The present study is the first description of a parvoviral sequence isolated from the brain of an Iberian lynx which died four weeks after being transferred to a quarantine centre from a hunting estate in Castilla-La-Mancha (southern border of the Iberian plateau). Four days prior to death, it had developed anorexia and muscle weakness. The nucleotide sequence, at 4589 nt long (G

Dental Pathology of the Iberian Lynx ( Lynx pardinus), Part I: Congenital, Developmental, and Traumatic Abnormalities.

The Iberian lynx is an endangered felid that has been subject to an intensive ongoing conservation program in an attempt to save it from extinction. Identification of dental pathologies could play an important role in the survival of this endangered species. The objective of this study is to evaluate the dental pathologies (congenital, developmental, and traumatic abnormalities) of this species of felid. Skulls of 88 adult specimens of the Iberian lynx ( Lynx pardinus) from the Doñana Biological Station [Estación Biológica de Doñana-Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas] (EBD-CSIC),

Epidemiology of trichinellosis in lynx in Finland.

Three hundred and twenty seven European lynx (Lynx lynx) were examined for Trichinella sp. larvae using the muscle digestion method. The animals were of both sexes, various ages, and collected between 1989 and 1994 in different locations in Finland. Forty percent of them (132) were found to be infected. Infection was overdispersed, so that the majority of infected lynx only harboured small amounts of larvae, while a minority had higher densities of infection, but never significantly exceeding 40 larvae per gram of muscle (lpg). The median density of infection was 1.04 lpg. To find factor stati

Ectoparasites of the endangered Iberian lynx Lynx pardinus and sympatric wild and domestic carnivores in Spain.

Ectoparasites can cause important skin disorders in animals and can also transmit pathogens. The Iberian lynx Lynx pardinus has been stated to be the most endangered felid in the world and such vector-borne pathogens may threaten its survival. We surveyed 98 wild carnivores (26 Iberian lynxes, 34 red foxes Vulpes vulpes, 24 Egyptian mongooses Herpestes ichneumon, 11 common genets Genetta genetta, two Eurasian badgers Meles meles, one polecat Mustela putorius) and 75 domestic but free-ranging carnivores (46 cats Felis catus, 29 dogs Canis familiaris) from June 2004 to June 2006 in the two areas

SARCOCYSTIS CANADENSIS N. SP. (PROTOZOA: SARCOCYSTIDAE) FROM LIMB MUSCLES OF THE CANADA LYNX (LYNX CANADENSIS).

Most species of endotherms and some ectotherms harbor muscle cysts (sarcocysts) of 1 or more species of apicomplexan parasites in the genus Sarcocystis. We report a novel species discovered in the muscles of a Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis). We found microscopic sarcocysts in limb muscles of 1 of 3 endangered Canada lynx from Minnesota. The sarcocyst wall was relatively thin (<2 µm) and had short, stubby protrusions with apical thickening. We characterized these further by sequencing the 18S, 28S, and ITS1 portions of nuclear ribosomal RNA genes. The sequences of each marker perfectly matched t

Spatiotemporal dynamics of Toxoplasma gondii infection in Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis) in western Québec, Canada.

Toxoplasma gondii, one of the more common zoonotic parasites in the world, can cause serious illness in humans and other animals worldwide. Felids are the only known host that can shed T. gondii oocysts, which are essential to the perpetuation of the parasite. In much of boreal Canada, the Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis) is the only wild felid host that could contribute to environmental contamination with T. gondii oocysts. We estimated the prevalence of T. gondii antibodies in Canadian lynx from western Québec and compared our results with earlier findings in the same region 12 yr earlier. We

A systematic review of pathogens in the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus): What about vector-borne pathogens?

The Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus), once considered the most endangered felid species worldwide, has experienced a remarkable recovery through intensive conservation efforts. Its small population size and low genetic diversity render it particularly vulnerable to infectious diseases, including those transmitted by arthropod vectors. This systematic review aimed to synthesize the current knowledge on pathogens investigated in the Iberian lynx, with a focus on vector-borne pathogens. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted in Web of Science, PubMed, and Scopus, yielding 4

First report of Sarcocystis bovifelis-like sporocysts in the intestine of the Canadian lynx (Lynx canadensis) in USA.

Sarcocystis bovifelis is a cattle parasite for which the domestic cat (Felis catus) is the only confirmed definitive host, and the role of wild felids in its transmission remains unknown. This study aimed to investigate the presence and identity of Sarcocystis species in the intestinal tissue of a dead Canada lynx (Lynx canadensis) from Minnesota, USA, to assess whether this wild felid could serve as a definitive host. Approximately 30 cm of terminal ileum was examined microscopically for sporocysts, and DNA from sporocyst-positive material was assayed using 18S rRNA and 28S rRNA gene markers.

Epidemiological surveillance of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus), 2010-2022.

Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) is a zoonotic pathogen whose main vector and reservoir are Hyalomma ticks. The recent emergence of the severe disease in humans caused by this virus in southwestern Europe has alerted sanitary authorities about its public health significance. This study was aimed to assess the role of the Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) in the epidemiology of CCHFV in the Iberian Peninsula. Of 554 lynxes tested, anti-CCHFV antibodies were detected in 66 animals (11.9 %; 95 % confidence intervals (CI): 9.2-14.6). Age was a risk factor associated with exposure to CCHFV

Orthopoxvirus DNA in Eurasian lynx, Sweden.

Cowpox virus, which has been used to protect humans against smallpox but may cause severe disease in immunocompromised persons, has reemerged in humans, domestic cats, and other animal species in Europe. Pseudorabies virus infection (Aujeszky's disease) in an Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) in Spain: a case report.

BACKGROUND: The only natural hosts of Pseudorabies virus (PRV) are members of the family Suidae (Sus scrofa scrofa). In species other than suids infection is normally fatal. In these mammals, including carnivores, PRV typically causes serious neurologic disease. The endangered Iberian lynx (Lynx pardinus) is a wild feline endemic to south-western Europe (Iberian Peninsula). The Iberian lynx was found to be the world's most endangered felid species in 2002. In wild felines, PRV infection has only been previously reported once in a Florida panther in 1994. No seropositive lynxes have ever been f
