[Water intake and urinary output in rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis)].

Water intake (drinking water and water from food) and urinary output in rhesus (Macaca mulatta) and cynomolgus monkey (M. fascicularis) watered ad libitum in individual cage were examined with 52 animals. The animal room was maintained at 25 +/- 2 degrees C and 55 +/- 10% with relative humidity, being lit at 12 hours interval. Water intake was found in wide variation between individuals, and about 20% of the monkeys were recognized as polydipsia without another abnormal behavior. No significant variation was found between daily water intake, but periodical (or seasonal) variation was observed

Visuospatial properties of caudal area 7b in Macaca fascicularis.

To proceed from sensation to movement, integration and transformation of information from different senses and reference frames are required. Several brain areas are involved in this transformation process, but previous neuroanatomical and neurophysiological studies have implicated the caudal area 7b as one particular component of this transformation system. In this study, we present the first quantitative report on the spatial coding properties of caudal area 7b. The results showed that neurons in this area had intermediate component characteristics in the transformation system; the area cont

Abruptio placentae in cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis): male bias.

BACKGROUND: Abruptio placentae is a serious problem with a high rate of maternal and fetal mortality and documented sexual dimorphism in reoccurrence. Macaca fascicularis is a well-described reproductive model; however, there are no data available regarding sexual dimorphism in abruptio placentae in these species. METHODS: A retrospective study of pathology and medical records in a large colony of M. fascicularis was performed. Placental specimens were analyzed. RESULTS: The incidence of placenta abruptio in the colony was 15.7/1000 births. In the abruptio placentae group, male fetuses had l

Polyostotic fibrous dysplasia in a cynomolgus Macaque (Macaca fascicularis).

A 2.3-y-old female cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis) presented with a broken right tibia and fibula. Radiographs showed multiple cyst-like defects in all long bones. We suspected that both fractures were pathologic because they occurred through these defects. Ultrasonography, MRI, and dual X-ray absorptiometry revealed that the defects were filled with soft tissue. Grossly, the bones were abnormal in shape, and a gelatinous material filled the defects and the surrounding marrow cavity. Histologically, the gelatinous material was composed of fibrin and cartilage; few normal bone cells we

Spontaneous thymoma in a juvenile cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis).

A single, solid, yellow-white thymic mass was found at necropsy of a two-year-old female cynomolgus macaque from a four-week, repeat-dose toxicity and immunogenicity study. Microscopically, the mass was multilobular and well encapsulated, surrounded by a thick connective tissue capsule, and composed of dense sheets of elongate or spindle-shaped cells and large cystic cavities separated by thick connective tissue stroma. Normal thymus was adjacent to the mass, but it was compressed. Within the mass were abundant interspersed Hassall's corpuscles; individual and small clusters of mature, small l

Development of osteopenia in ovariectomized cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

Spinal osteopenia that is due in part to failure to gain bone has previously been reported in ovariectomized nonhuman primates. In these studies, development of osteopenia over one year was followed by dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry in both domestically-reared and feral ovariectomized (OVX) and sham-ovariectomized (SHAM) cynomolgus monkeys. To promote development of absolute osteopenia, the domestically-reared animals were all older than nine years and were fed a diet containing 0.14% calcium for most of the experimental period. Both SHAM and OVX feral animals fed 0.6% calcium gained bone ma

Experimental Toxocara canis infection in cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis).

Visceral larva migrans was produced in 16 cynomolgus macaques (Macaca fascicularis) experimentally inoculated with 45,000 embryonated eggs of Toxocara canis as a single bolus or in 3 divided doses. The hematologic and serologic changes were similar to those observed in children with visceral Toxocara infection. Neurologic signs developed in 3 animals and were characterized by ataxia and nystagmus. Growth rates were diminished in inoculated animals when compared with the rates in noninoculated controls. Diagnostic antibody titers as measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay were noted in al

In vivo study of human Plasmodium knowlesi in Macaca fascicularis.

Plasmodium knowlesi is a malaria parasite of Old World monkeys and is infectious to humans. In this study Macaca fascicularis was used as a model to understand the host response to P. knowlesi using parasitological and haematological parameters. Three M. fascicularis of either sex were experimentally infected with P. knowlesi erythrocytic parasites from humans. The pre-patent period for P. knowlesi infection in M. fascicularis ranged from seven to 14 days. The parasitemia observed was 13,686-24,202 parasites per microL of blood for asexual stage and 88-264 parasites per microL of blood for sex

Transplantation of enzyme-treated teeth in the monkey Macaca fascicularis.

Homologous tooth transplants evoke immunogenic rejection against antigens within donor periodontal ligaments cells and ground substance. Eight maxillary incisors of 6 juvenile animals were extracted, crowns and pulps removed by gutta percha; the roots were incubated serially in enzyme solutions and glutaraldehyde at 37 degrees C for 5 h to destroy cells, glycoproteins and proteoglycans. Seven control teeth from the same 6 animals were incubated in saline at 37 degrees C for 15 min. All teeth were then speedily transplanted to other animals which were killed at 6 wk or 3 months. Effects of transdermal mirtazapine on hyporexic rhesus and cynomolgus macaques (Macaca mulatta and Macaca fascicularis).

BACKGROUND: Hyporexia and weight loss are important indicators of physical and psychological well-being in macaque colonies. An FDA-approved transdermal formulated Mirtazapine (MTZ) shows effectiveness in managing feline hyporexia. This study sought to determine its effectiveness as an appetite stimulant in macaques. METHODS: Fourteen macaques with idiopathic hyporexia, intractable to conventional management were treated with transdermal MTZ (0.5 mg/kg) topically administered to aural pinnae once daily for 14 days. Qualitative food consumption was monitored daily for 6 months. Body weights we

The establishment of a rheumatoid arthritis primate model in Macaca fascicularis.

BACKGROUND: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a long-term autoimmune disorder that mostly affects the joints and leads to the destruction of cartilage. An RA model in non-human primates is especially useful because of their close phylogenetic relationship to humans in terms of cross-reactivity to compounds developed using modern drug technologies. METHODS: We used a collagen-induced arthritis (CIA) model in Macaca fascicularis. CIA was induced by the immunization of chicken type II collagen. Swelling was measured as the longitudinal and transverse axes of 16 proximal interphalangeal joints. RESUL

An extragonadal teratoma in a female cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis).

Extragonadal teratomas have not been reported in nonhuman primates. A female cynomolgus monkey, a vehicle control in an exploratory toxicity study, was necropsied. Microscopic examination of an extragonadal mass in the animal's craniodorsal retroperitoneum revealed a teratoma. This is the first report of an extragonadal teratoma in a nonhuman primate.

Craniorachischisis and omphalocele in a stillborn cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis).

Nonhuman primates have been a common animal model to evaluate experimentally induced malformations. Reports on spontaneous malformations are important in determining the background incidence of congenital anomalies in specific species and in evaluating experimental results. Here we report on a stillborn cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) with multiple congenital anomalies from the colony maintained at the Southwest National Primate Research Center at the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, San Antonio, Texas. Physical findings included low birth weight, craniorachischisis, facial abnorma

Nonsurgical repair of a pseudoaneurysm in a cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis).

A cynomolgus macaque presented with an ecchymotic and edematous left leg approximately 1 wk after a blood sample had been collected from the left femoral vein. Ecchymosis was noted in the femoral triangle, prepuce, and scrotum. The animal was not febrile or exhibiting signs of pain or distress. Duplex Doppler ultrasound imaging was used to evaluate the area. An arteriovenous fistula between the femoral artery and vein, accompanied by a pseudoaneurysm arising from the femoral artery, was identified. Various invasive and noninvasive treatment options for the pseudoaneurysm, including surgical re

Testicular and epididymal appendages in the cynomolgus macaque (Macaca fascicularis).

BACKGROUND: Vestigial remnants of the mesonephric duct and paramesonephric duct are well-known developmental abnormalities of the human testis and epididymis. METHODS AND RESULTS: During routine macroscopic and histological examination of four cynomolgus macaques, three different forms of testicular and epididymal appendages were observed, namely a unilateral appendix testis, a bilateral appendix epididymidis, and several vasa aberrantia. By histological and immunohistochemical examinations it could be demonstrated that both the appendix testis and the appendix epididymidis consisted of a cen

Ultrastructural study of the primary olfactory pathway in Macaca fascicularis.

Olfactory ensheathing glial cells (OEGs) interact with a wide repertoire of cell types and support extension of olfactory axons (OAs) within the olfactory pathway. OEGs are thought to exclude OAs from contact with all other cells between the olfactory epithelium and the glomerulus of the olfactory bulb. These properties have lead to testing to determine whether OEGs support axonal growth following transplantation. The cellular interactions of transplanted OEGs will probably resemble those that occur within the normal pathway where interactions between OEGs and fibroblasts are prominent. No pre

The neurovirulence of flaviviruses in crab-eating monkeys (Macaca fascicularis).

The neurovirulent properties of attenuated dengue-2 and yellow fever (YF) vaccines, dengue-2 (DEN-2) and Japanese encephalitis (JE) viruses were studied in crab-eating monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). Number of central nervous system sites (as proportion affected) with neurovirulence (NV) lesions were compared. The results indicate that these monkeys reliably developed NV-lesion when inoculated with either JE or YF vaccine viruses (87%). NV-lesions occurred in a minority when inoculated with DEN-2 vaccine virus, were of minimal severity (9%), were probably biologically insignificant, and were of

The fate of chronically consumed caffeine in the monkey (Macaca fascicularis).

The metabolic fate of chronically administered caffeine was examined in monkeys. Caffeine and equal parts of citric acid were added to the drinking water of four female monkeys (Macaca fascicularis). The concentration was gradually increased over a 10-week period to 0.35 mg/ml for three of the monkeys. A monkey that was lactating, but had no infant, was exposed to caffeine in the drinking water at a concentration of 0.30 mg/ml. At these doses, administered for up to 50 weeks, there were no overt signs of toxicity as indicated by food and fluid consumption, body weight, or general condition of
