The Number of Louse Eggs on Wild Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata) Varies with Age, but Not with Sex or Season.

During grooming, primates remove harmful ectoparasites, such as ticks and lice, and there is direct evidence for a health benefit of tick removal. Grooming behaviors differ among primates with respect to age and sex. Moreover, the number of ectoparasite may exhibit seasonal variation. Therefore the number of ectoparasites on a host may vary with effects, host age and sex, and season. However, these effects have not been a focus of louse infestation studies of primates. Grooming in Japanese macaques is related to sex and age, with developmental changes in behavior corresponding to the timing of

Behavioral and emotional response of Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) mothers after their offspring receive an aggression.

The authors of this study investigated the behavioral and emotional response of female Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) to an aggression received by their offspring to evaluate the existence of cognitive empathic responses in a naturalistic setting. After their offspring received an aggression, mothers did not direct increased affiliative contacts to them. The factors likely to affect the degree of distress in the offspring or the perceived risk for the mother failed to appropriately modulate maternal behavior. Finally, mothers did not increase their frequency of scratching (a behavioral ind

Behavior of infant Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) with congenital limb malformations during their first three months.

Locomotion and mother-infant interactions of a severely malformed, a slightly malformed, and a normal infant were observed in a free-ranging group of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata). The severely malformed infant had no feet and had hands consisting of 2 digits. The slightly malformed infant had normal feet and hands consisting of 2 digits. The severely malformed infant was more retarded in development of posture and locomotion than the other infants; however, it developed locomotor patterns appropriate to its defects. All infants spent approximately the same amount of time in contact with t

An anatomical investigation on the muscles of the pelvic outlet in crab-eating monkey (Macaca irus) and Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) with special reference to their nerve supply.

For a fuller understanding of the nerve supply to the muscles of the pelvic outlet in man, 4 pelvic-halves of crab-eating monkeys and 6 pelvic-halves of Japanese monkeys were minutely dissected. 1) The composition of the pudendal plexus tends to be limited to 2 segments, S1 and S2. 2) If we consider the origin of the nerves, the pudendal plexus is divided into 2, the first or medial and the second or lateral parts. From the first part arise the pelvic splanchnic nerves, the nerve to the iliopubocaudalis and the nerve to the ischiocaudalis. From the second part the dorsal nerve of the penis or

Social grooming efficiency and techniques are influenced by manual impairment in free-ranging Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata).

Animals born with physical impairments may particularly require behavioural flexibility and innovation to survive and carry out social activities, such as grooming. Studies on free-ranging Japanese macaques on Awaji Island, Japan, have shown that individuals with congenital limb malformations exhibited compensatory behaviours while grooming, such as increased mouth and elbow use for removing ectoparasites. The aim of this study is to explore disabled and nondisabled grooming techniques to determine whether and to what extent disabled monkeys develop novel grooming techniques, and if there is d

No birth-associated maternal mortality in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) despite giving birth to large-headed neonates.

Human fetuses at term are large relative to the dimensions of the maternal birth canal, implying that their birth can be associated with difficulties. The tight passage through the human birth canal can lead to devastating outcomes if birth becomes obstructed, including maternal and fetal death. Although macaques have to accommodate similarly large fetuses, relative to their maternal birth canals, it was not known whether macaque mothers face birth difficulties similar to humans. Based on 27 y of demographic data from a semi-free-ranging, closely monitored population of Japanese macaques (Maca

Distribution of P2X3 purinoceptor-immunoreactive sensory nerve endings in the carotid body of Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata).

In the carotid body of laboratory rodents, adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP)-mediated transmission is regarded as critical for transmission from chemoreceptor type I cells to P2X3 purinoceptor-expressing sensory nerve endings. The present study investigated the distribution of P2X3-immunoreactive sensory nerve endings in the carotid body of the adult male Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) using multilabeling immunofluorescence. Immunoreactivity for P2X3 was detected in nerve endings associated with chemoreceptor type I cells immunoreactive for synaptophysin. Spherical or flattened terminal parts

Antiprotozoal and antihelminthic properties of plants ingested by wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) in Yakushima Island.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Primates forage on a variety of plant parts to balance their dietary intake to meet requirements of energy, nutrition and maintenance, however the reason(s) leading them to ingest some plants which have no nutritional value and/or contain bioactive or even toxic secondary metabolites is recently gaining closer attention. The growing literature suggests that primates consume plants for medicinal purposes (self-medication) as well, particularly when infected with parasites and pathogens (bacteria, viruses, microbes). Interestingly, some of the plants they consume

Behavioral thermoregulation in relation to humidity in wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui): the significance of semi-shade.

Recent climate change is increasing thermal stress, highlighting the importance of understanding how wild animals behaviorally buffer these conditions. Although microhabitat use is known to vary with temperature and to function as behavioral thermoregulation, the effect of humidity on this process (i.e., the effect of humidity on temperature-dependent microhabitat use) remains poorly understood. Here, I aimed to examine microhabitat use in wild Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata yakui) on Yakushima, Japan, across sunlight categories (sun, semi-shade, shade), explicitly accounting for both tempe

Cage-Side Blood Collections from the Ear Can Be Used for Hematological Evaluations in Japanese Macaques (Macaca fuscata).

Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) are used in biomedical research where frequent, small-volume blood sampling for monitoring the animal's health may be required. Femoral blood collected under anesthesia is the standard for obtaining CBC analyses from nonhuman primates to assess their health. However, anesthetizing animals to obtain these collections may not be ideal due to adverse impacts of frequent anesthesia. Cage-side blood sampling from the pinna of the ear is a convenient and less invasive method for blood collection without anesthesia. However, it is unknown whether hematologic paramet

T-cell/Histiocyte-rich Large B-cell Lymphoma of the Larynx in a Juvenile Japanese Macaque (Macaca fuscata).

An 11-month-old female Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata), born in captivity in a research institute, suddenly died without clinical signs. Necropsy examination revealed a nodular mass protruding from the left ventral aspect of the larynx, compressing the epiglottis anteriorly. Histopathologically, the laryngeal mass was comprised of medium- to large-sized atypical cells. Immunohistochemically, these were positive for CD20 and partially positive for CD79α. Among the atypical cells were CD3+ T cells and CD68+ histiocytes. Based on the findings, this case was diagnosed as T-cell/histiocyte-rich l

Measurement of serum IgE antibodies against Japanese cedar pollen (Cryptomeria japonica) in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) with pollinosis.

IgE antibodies against allergens of Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica, CJ) pollen in the serum of seven Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) with pollinosis were measured by fluorometric indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). All of the monkeys were found to have specific IgE to the crude pollen antigen. The specific IgE levels were well correlated with those determined by the Pharmacia CAP system. IgE antibodies were then assayed with two kinds of purified allergens (Cry j I and Cry j II) by the ELISA. We found that five monkeys had specific IgE to both allergens, although the ot

Fine structure and subepithelial capillaries of the main excretory duct epithelium of the submandibular gland of the Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata.

The fine structure and subepithelial capillaries of the main excretory duct epithelium (MEDE) of the submandibular gland in the Japanese monkey, Macaca fuscata were investigated by light, scanning, and transmission electron microscopy. Capillaries found beneath the MEDE were all fenestrated ones. Some of them had elevated endothelium known as pored domes. The capillary density (number of capillaries per 200 microns length of MEDE) was 6.05 +/- 1.36, and the number of fenestrae per 10 microns length of available endothelium was 11.62 +/- 3.82. The MEDE was pseudostratified, and consisted of fou

Detection of Plasmodium knowlesi DNA in the urine and faeces of a Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) over the course of an experimentally induced infection.

BACKGROUND: Diagnostic techniques based on PCR for the detection of Plasmodium DNA can be highly sensitive and specific. The vast majority of these techniques rely, however, on the invasive sampling of blood from infected hosts. There is, currently, considerable interest in the possibility of using body fluids other than blood as sources of parasite DNA for PCR diagnosis. METHODS: Urine and faeces were obtained from a Plasmodium knowlesi infected-Japanese macaque (Macaca fuscata) over the course of an experimentally induced infection. Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) with alveolar echinococcosis after treatment with albendazole for 10 years: serodiagnosis and determination of albendazole metabolites.

In 1997, an outbreak of alveolar echinococcosis in Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) occurred in a zoo in Hokkaido, Japan. Twelve infected monkeys from a colony (n = 57) were diagnosed serologically by Western blotting, and ultrasonography showed the presence of tumor-like tissue in the livers of nine monkeys. The 12 infected monkeys have been treated with albendazole for 10 years without surgical resection. Ten of these monkeys have died so far; diagnoses were confirmed histopathologically through autopsy. Two of these monkeys are still alive. Recently, a significant difference between the tw

Changes in testicular and nipple volume related to age and seasonality in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata), especially in the pre- and post-pubertal periods.

We investigated, longitudinally and cross-sectionally, age and seasonal change in both the testis and nipple volume of Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata) in relation to concentration profiles of gonadal steroids: testosterone (T) in males and progesterone (P) in females. Testicular volume (TV) and nipple volume (NV) showed rapid growth at puberty, 4.5 and 3.5 years of age in males and females, respectively, but in both sexes there were precocious individuals. The testis as a whole matures at about 10 years of age. TV change is closely related to T concentration profile. The pattern of TV chang

Outbreak of larval Echinococcus multilocularis infection in Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) in a zoo, Hokkaido: western blotting patterns in the infected monkeys.

A high prevalence of larval Echinococcus multilocularis (Em) infection was found in zoo primates in Hokkaido, Japan. In October 1997, a Japanese monkey (Macaca fuscata) died and histopathologically diagnosed as alveolar hydatidosis. Serum samples were collected from the remaining Japanese monkeys and examined for antibodies against Em by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and western blotting. Serological tests showed 12 more animals of the remaining 57 monkeys were possibly infected. Ultrasonography revealed that nine of these 12 animals had a cystic lesion in the liver. Enterobius (Enterobius) macaci Yen, 1973 (Nematoda: Oxyuridae: Enterobiinae) was collected from a Japanese macaque, Macaca fuscata, in Nara and Yamaguchi Prefectures, Honshu Island, Japan, for the first time. A redescription is presented along with DNA sequence data. This pinworm is a typical member of the subgenus Enterobius and is characteristic in the spicule morphology, being readily distinguished from other congeners. Phylogenetic analyses based on 18S ribosomal RNA gene (rDNA) and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) Cox1 gene assign its position in the pinworm lineage adapted to the Old World prim
