ORAL MICROBIOME OF BENNETT'S (NOTAMACROPUS RUFOGRISEUS) AND YELLOW-FOOTED (PETROGALE XANTHOPUS) ROCK WALLABIES AND THE IMPACT OF INTRAORAL DISEASE.

Intraoral disease, including macropod progressive periodontal disease, is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality for wallabies under human care. Clinical signs associated with intraoral disease vary, and diagnostic findings can be difficult to interpret without intraoral radiographs or advanced imaging; therefore, this disease process can be challenging to detect in its early stages. Previous studies have investigated the effects of intraoral disease on the normal oral microbiome of various domestic species. Results from these studies demonstrate specific changes to the oral micr

HYPERLIPIDEMIA AND XANTHOMATOSIS IN YELLOW-FOOTED ROCK WALLABIES (PETROGALE XANTHOPUS) UNDER MANAGED CARE.

Xanthomas are localized lipid deposits in organs with associated granulomatous inflammation. Xanthomatosis is a rare condition in both human and veterinary medicine and is often linked to inherited or acquired dyslipidemias. Three female yellow-footed rock wallabies (Petrogale xanthopus) at a single institution were diagnosed via biopsy with cutaneous xanthomas secondary to hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia, and an additional two female yellow-footed rock wallabies were diagnosed with xanthomas at a second institution. All cases presented with cutaneous masses at the haired skin an

NEWLY DESCRIBED TOXOPLASMA GONDII STRAIN CAUSES HIGH MORTALITY IN RED NECKED WALLABIES (MACROPUS RUFOGRISEUS) IN A ZOO.

This manuscript describes an outbreak of fatal toxoplasmosis in wallabies. Ten adult red necked wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) were imported from New Zealand to the Virginia Zoo. Agglutination testing upon admission into quarantine showed all animals to be negative for antibodies to Toxoplasma gondii. Nine of these wallabies died from acute toxoplasmosis within 59-565 (average 224) days after being moved onto exhibit. Clinical signs included lethargy, diarrhea, tachypnea, and ataxia that progressed rapidly; death without premonitory signs occurred in one case. Histopathologic examination rev

Infection with Toxoplasma gondii in a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) and a Patagonian mara (Dolichotis patagonum) in captivity.

Toxoplasmosis is an infectious, zoonotic and parasitic disease, caused by Toxoplasma gondii. In this manucript, two cases of infection with T. gondii in captive animals from a zoological park in the central region of Chile are described. One case was a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus), which is highly susceptible to the infection, and the other was a Patagonian mara (Dolichotis patagonum), a rodent in which there is no previous report of the infection. Both animals had myocarditis, with the presence of intralesional tachizoites and cysts suggestive of infection with T. gondii. This infection was

Skeletal Pathology of Eastern Grey Kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) Exposed to High Environmental Fluoride Levels in South-Eastern Australia.

Significantly elevated bone fluoride concentrations have been reported in a population of eastern grey kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) resident near a fluoride-emitting aluminum smelter in southeastern Australia. This paper describes the skeletal and synovial joint lesions observed post mortem in the same sample of kangaroos (n = 76). The prevalence and severity of skeletal lesions, specifically the formation of multiple, large, smooth exostoses over the diaphysis of long bones (especially, but not exclusively, on the tibia, fibula and metatarsi), were positively associated with bone fluoride c

Toxoplasmosis in Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) in Spain.

Toxoplasmosis is one of the more common parasitic zoonoses world-wide. In this study, an epizootic of toxoplasmosis among captive Bennett's wallabies (Macropus rufogriseus) from different locations is reported. By means of light microscopy, Toxoplasma gondii-like tachyzoites were observed associated to interstitial pneumonia, non-suppurative myocarditis, cholangiohepatitis and severe gastroenteritis. The protozoa stained positively with a T. gondii antibody and ultrastructurally were similar to T. gondii. Strikingly, tachyzoites appeared sometimes in an intranuclear location within granulocyte

Phylogenetic analysis of the New Guinean forest wallabies, Dorcopsis and Dorcopsulus reveals cryptic divergent lineages impacted by highland and lowland barriers.

Amongst the Macropodidae (kangaroos and wallabies) the morphologically distinct forest wallabies are the most poorly studied. Modern forest wallabies are confined to the rainforests of New Guinea, with three species inhabiting the lowlands (Dorcopsis), two species in the highlands (Dorcopsulus), and one satellite island endemic (Dorcopsis atrata). Due to limited sampling in previous studies, our understanding of the evolutionary history and systematics of these genera is unresolved. We obtained tissue samples from 17 individual Dorcopsis and 26 Dorcopsulus including representatives from five o

Echocardiographic Examination of 16 Eastern Grey Kangaroos (Macropus giganteus) and One Red Kangaroo (Osphranter rufus).

Habitat loss, road trauma, predation, disease, and natural disasters impact the health and survival of the family Macropodidae, including kangaroos. Cardiac disease has been reported, including hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), nutritional myodegeneration, valvular pathology, cardiovascular parasites, toxoplasmosis, and toxicities. Human research has evaluated macropod pericardium and aortic valves as possible bioprostheses. The goals of this prospective anatomic study were to echocardiographically evaluate opportunistically presented kangaroos: 14 clinically nor

Dynamic sperm proteome remodeling during epididymal maturation in a marsupial, Macropus giganteus†.

While assisted reproductive technologies (ARTs) are widely used in domestic animals, successful implementation of ARTs to conserve wildlife species remains challenging. In macropods, crucial aspects of fundamental reproductive biology, including changes induced by epididymal maturation, remain unknown, limiting the development of ARTs. In this context, we performed a proteomic analysis of spermatozoa from the caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis of Eastern Grey Kangaroos (n = 6) to profile changes over epididymal maturation. Samples prepared by filter-aided sample preparation digestion were ana

Functional interactions between coat structure and colour in the determination of solar heat load on arid living kangaroos in summer: balancing crypsis and thermoregulation.

Interactions of solar radiation with mammal fur are complex. Reflection of radiation in the visible spectrum provides colour that has various roles, including sexual display and crypsis, i.e., camouflage. Radiation that is absorbed by a fur coat is converted to heat, a proportion of which impacts on the skin. Not all absorption occurs at the coat surface, and some radiation penetrates the coat before being absorbed, particularly in lighter coats. In studies on this phenomenon in kangaroos, we found that two arid zone species with the thinnest coats had similar effective heat load, despite mark

SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF A TARSAL LUXATION IN A RED KANGAROO (OSPHRANTER RUFUS).

Joint luxations commonly occur in animals secondary to traumatic injury. Because of the unique hind-limb anatomy of macropods, surgical stabilization of orthopedic injuries is considered challenging, and reports of successful management are limited. A 4-yr-old male neutered red kangaroo (Osphranter rufus) presented with a dorsolateral luxation of the left tibiotarsal joint. Surgical reduction and tarsal arthrodesis were performed. Although the full range of motion of the tarsal joint was limited, this kangaroo was still able to ambulate normally at slow speeds following surgery and recovery. T

OCULAR ANATOMY AND PATHOLOGY IN LUMHOLTZ'S TREE-KANGAROO (DENDROLAGUS LUMHOLTZI).

Lumholtz's tree-kangaroo (Dendrolagus lumholtzi) is one of two species of tree-kangaroos found in Queensland, Australia. There is little information about ocular anatomy and pathology in any species of tree-kangaroo, and there are claims of blindness from unknown causes in free-ranging Lumholtz's tree-kangaroos. This study investigated ocular anatomy and pathology in 80 individuals, using examination of 31 live animals and histopathologic examination of eyes from 49 carcasses. Tree-kangaroos were found to have a typical vertebrate eye with immuno-histochemical evidence for dichromatic color vi

Skeletal fluorosis in marsupials: A comparison of bone lesions in six species from an Australian industrial site.

In this study we explored the prevalence, type, location and severity of skeletal lesions in six species of Australian marsupial (Macropus giganteus, Notamacropus rufogriseus, Wallabia bicolor, Phascolarctos cinereus, Trichosurus vulpecula and Pseudocheirus peregrinus) from high and low-fluoride environments. Lesions occurred to varying extents in all species, and lesion distribution varied with biomechanical differences in gait and mastication. Bone fluoride levels increased with severity of periosteal hyperostosis. The mean bone fluoride concentration of individuals lacking hyperostosis (acr

Comparative pathology of pulmonary hydatid cysts in macropods and sheep.

The development and appearance of hydatid cysts of Echinococcus granulosus in experimentally infected tammar wallabies (Macropus eugenii) and sheep during the period 9-17 months post-infection (mpi) were studied. Cysts of unknown age were also examined from mature, naturally infected sheep. The cysts grew more rapidly and became fertile within a shorter period in wallabies compared with sheep. Cysts from the wallabies were larger in absolute size and were larger relative to the size of the lungs. Microscopical examination revealed that wallaby hydatid cysts developed in small bronchioles. Partial amputation regrowth of P4 distal digit in an eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus): a case report.

This case report describes distal regrowth of the fourth hind digit (P4) following traumatic autoamputation in a young adult eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus). Injury to P4 is generally considered to carry a poor prognosis due to its critical role in weight-bearing and propulsion during hopping. Following loss of the distal phalanx, the nail bed remained intact and healing progressed without surgical intervention. Sequential observations documented epithelialisation, preservation of the nail bed and subsequent formation of a keratinised nail structure. The animal maintained normal loc

The biomechanics of foraging determines face length among kangaroos and their relatives.

Increasing body size is accompanied by facial elongation across a number of mammalian taxa. This trend forms the basis of a proposed evolutionary rule, cranial evolutionary allometry (CREA). However, facial length has also been widely associated with the varying mechanical resistance of foods. Here, we combine geometric morphometrics and computational biomechanical analyses to determine whether evolutionary allometry or feeding ecology have been dominant influences on facial elongation across 16 species of kangaroos and relatives (Macropodiformes). We found no support for an allometric trend.

Successful management of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy in a Matschie's tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus matschiei).

A 3-yr-old, intact male Matschie's tree kangaroo (Dendrolagus matschiei) was examined for a 1-wk history of intermittent lethargy and tachypnea. An echocardiogram revealed concentric hypertrophy of the left ventricular free wall and interventricular septum. These findings were compared to measurements from healthy Matschie's tree kangaroos, supporting a diagnosis of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. At the time of publication, the patient has been managed for over 11.5 yr, using a combination of enalapril, furosemide, diltiazem, and diet modifications. Diagnosis and treatment of mesenteric volvulus in a red kangaroo (Macropus rufus).

CASE DESCRIPTION: An 8-year-old male red kangaroo (Macropus rufus) was evaluated with a 2-week history of vomiting and anorexia. Four days prior, the patient became refractory to medical management. The kangaroo was admitted for diagnostic testing and treatment including whole body CT, blood work, and emergency laparotomy. CLINICAL FINDINGS: CT findings of a severely enlarged stomach, splenic displacement, and a whirl sign were indicative of mesenteric volvulus with gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV).
