Bioavailability of Magnesium and Potassium Salts Used as Potential Substitutes for Sodium Chloride in Human Nutrition - A Review.

Hypertension represents a major risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. As a diet high in sodium chloride is associated with hypertension, so-called "blood pressure salts" are attracting increasing scientific interest. These are characterized by a partial replacement of sodium chloride by other salts, mainly potassium and magnesium compounds. The aim of this review is to evaluate the bioavailability of potassium and magnesium salts as dietary supplements and to identify potential sodium chloride substitutes. A literature search was conducted in the PubMed database using the PICO scheme. Rando

Effects of calcium and magnesium acetates on tissue distribution of carcinogenic doses of cadmium chloride in Wistar rats.

Previous studies have shown that magnesium, unlike calcium, prevents cadmium carcinogenesis at the subcutaneous injection site, and that neither magnesium nor calcium has any significant influence on the production of testicular tumors by cadmium in rats. The present investigation attempts to disclose the nature of those different effects by comparing the results of administration of both physiological metals on the uptake and distribution of carcinogenic doses of cadmium in rats. Male Wistar rats received a single subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of 109CdCl2 (0.02 mmol/kg or 0.04 mmol/kg) and s.

Renal function and magnesium clearance in young and old cows given potassium chloride and sodium citrate.

Six young (3 yr old) and six old (8 to 11 yr old) cows were used to examine renal function, KCl and sodium citrate effects on Mg clearance rate and the relation of parathyroid hormone (PTH) to Mg reabsorption. The treatments were 1.5 g KCl/kg body weight (BW) and 1.5 g Na citrate/kg BW. Inulin and p-aminohippuric acid (PAH) clearance rates were used as measures of glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and effective renal plasma flow (ERPF), respectively, in control cows on each treatment day. Creatinine clearance rate was also used as a measure of GFR in all cows. Magnesium loading (2.4 mg/kg BW) t

[Calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, chloride and glucose in the blood of cattle following intravenous infusion of solutions with various calcium and magnesium concentration aimed at improving the treatment of hypomagnesemia].

Recent findings on changes in the mineral content of tissues in bovine hypocalcaemia and hypomagnesaemia show the necessity of using different mineral solutions for the treatment and prevention of these conditions. Infusion of 2% CaCl2-6H2O with 10% MgCl2-6H2O and 5% glucose one after the other or in combination produced severe functional changes in cardiac activity and respiration. Recommended concentrations for treatment or prophylaxis of hypomagnesaemia were 10 g magnesium chloride and 2 g calcium chloride, or alternatively 12 g magnesium adipate and 5 g calcium gluconate, in 100 ml of dist

Thermodynamic Inhibition of Carbon Dioxide Hydrate with Magnesium Chloride and Methanol: Comparative Phase Equilibrium and PXRD Study.

Clathrate hydrates of carbon dioxide represent a subject of considerable interest in both fundamental science and the development of promising technologies. The phase behavior of CO2 hydrate in the presence of concentrated aqueous solutions remains poorly understood. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive investigation into the impact of magnesium chloride (0-24 mass%) and methanol (0-40 mass%) on the thermodynamic stability of CO2 hydrate. New experimental data on the three-phase gas-aqueous solution-gas hydrate equilibrium in the temperature range 243-283 K and pressure range 1-4.5 MPa

Effects of long-term oral magnesium chloride replacement in congestive heart failure secondary to coronary artery disease.

Magnesium deficiency frequently develops in patients with congestive heart failure and may increase susceptibility to lethal arrhythmias and sudden death via multiple pathophysiologic mechanisms. The effects of peroral magnesium supplementation were investigated in a randomized, double-blind, crossover trial involving 21 patients with stable congestive heart failure secondary to coronary artery disease. All were receiving long-term loop diuretics, and had normal renal function, and low or normal serum magnesium concentrations. Subjects alternately received enteric-coated magnesium chloride (15

Insight into the protein salting-in mechanism of arginine, magnesium chloride and ethylene glycol: Solvent interaction with aromatic solutes.

Key factors in the salting-in effects on proteins of additives are their interactions with aromatic groups. We studied the interaction of four aromatic solutes, benzyl alcohol (BA), phenol, 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (4-HBA) and methyl gallate (MG), with different salting-in additives, arginine hydrochloride (ArgHCl), magnesium chloride (MgCl2), ethylene glycol (EG), and guanidine hydrochloride (GdnHCl) using solubility measurements. We used sodium chloride (NaCl) as a control. MgCl2 decreased the solubility of the four aromatic solutes with weak solute dependence. In contrast, ArgHCl, GdnHCl, an

Effect of Different Formulations of Magnesium Chloride Used As Anesthetic Agents on the Performance of the Isolated Heart of Octopus vulgaris.

Magnesium chloride (MgCl2) is commonly used as a general anesthetic in cephalopods, but its physiological effects including those at cardiac level are not well-characterized. We used an in vitro isolated perfused systemic heart preparation from the common octopus, Octopus vulgaris, to investigate: (a) if in vivo exposure to MgCl2 formulations had an effect on cardiac function in vitro and, if so, could this impact recovery and (b) direct effects of MgCl2 formulations on cardiac function. In vitro hearts removed from animals exposed in vivo to 3.5% MgCl2 in sea water (20 min) or to a mixture of

The effect of slow releasing oral magnesium chloride on the QTc interval of the electrocardiogram during open heart surgery.

Recent work in both animal and human studies emphasizes the value of magnesium in the maintenance of the functional and structural integrity of cardiac muscle. Both intracellular and extracellular magnesium concentrations can vary independently and the serum and red cell magnesium levels may not give an accurate account of intracellular cardiac magnesium deficiency. However, electrocardiographic studies of magnesium levels could provide an accurate index of intracellular cardiac magnesium levels. Twenty-four patients scheduled electively for mitral valve replacement were studied to evaluate th

Modulation of erythrocyte potassium chloride cotransport, potassium content, and density by dietary magnesium intake in transgenic SAD mouse.

Prevention of erythrocyte dehydration is a potential therapeutic strategy for sickle cell disease. Increasing erythrocyte magnesium (Mg) could inhibit sickle cell dehydration by increasing chloride (CI) and water content and by inhibiting potassium chloride (K-CI) cotransport. In transgenic SAD 1 and (control) C57BL/6 normal mice, we investigated the effect of 2 weeks of diet with either low Mg (6 +/- 2 mg/kg body weight/d) or high Mg (1,000 +/- 20 mg/kg body weight/ d), in comparison with a diet of standard Mg (400 +/- 20 mg/ kg body weight/d). The high-Mg diet increased SAD 1 erythrocyte Mg

Innovative salt replacement for green Spanish-style olives using potassium, calcium, and magnesium chlorides during packaging.

This work aimed to enhance green Spanish-style Manzanilla table olives by replacing salt with K, Ca, and Mg chlorides in innovative packaging, utilising Response Surface Methodology (RSM). Both the added replacers and naturally occurring minerals were considered. RSM allowed the development of predictive models for K, Ca, Mg, and Mn (initially present) in olive flesh and their contributions to Reference Daily Intakes (RDI) based on the added salts. The sodium content in the new products decreased from 1.4 g/100 g flesh to 0.68 g/100 g flesh, while K, Ca, and Mg concentrations could increase up

Sex- and dose-dependent effects of post-trial calcium channel blockade by magnesium chloride on memory for inhibitory avoidance conditioning.

Calcium influx through voltage-dependent Ca(2+) channels is critical for many neuronal processes required for learning and memory. Persistent increases in cytosolic intracellular Ca(2+) concentrations in aging neurons are associated with learning impairments, while small transient subcellular changes in intracellular calcium concentrations play critical roles in neural plasticity in young neurons. In the present study, young male and female Fisher 344 × Brown Norway (FBN) hybrid rats were administered different doses of magnesium chloride (0.0, 100.0, or 200.0mg/kg, i.p.) following a single in

Pattern of cardiac fibrosis in rabbits periodically fed a magnesium-restricted diet and administered rare earth chloride through drinking water.

It has been postulated that causation of the tropical cardiomyopathy endomyocardial fibrosis (EMF) is linked to magnesium (Mg) deficiency and cardiac toxicity of the rare earth element cerium (Ce). The aim of the present study was to define the myocardial lesions in rabbits that were fed on Mg-restricted diet (70-80 ppm) periodically and were provided drinking water contaminated with rare earth chloride (1 g/L). Forty New Zealand white rabbits were divided into four groups following a 2 x 2 factorial design. Two groups were periodically fed on Mg-restricted diet with one of them receiving wate

Synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy study of the evolution of chlorine during the pyro-hydrolysis of calcium and magnesium chloride waste.

Effective liberation of chlorine (Cl) as a recoverable product such as hydrochloric acid is crucial for the clean disposal of massive Cl-bearing industrial solid waste. This study aims to clarify the evolution of Cl upon the pyrohydrolysis of CaCl2 waste. Particularly, the use of silica and MgCl2 to promote the breakage of Ca-Cl bonds to release HCl gas has been investigated, via synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). As confirmed, in the presence of silica, the pyrohydrolysis of CaCl2 commences from 800 °C, lower than the minimum temperature predicted based on the existing thermodyn
