Profiling Parkinson's disease cognitive phenotypes via resting-state magnetoencephalography.

Aberrant brain oscillations are a hallmark of Parkinson's disease (PD) pathophysiology and may be related to both motor and nonmotor symptoms. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI) affects many people with PD even at the time of diagnosis and conversion risks to PD dementia (PDD) are very high. Unfortunately, pharmacotherapies are not addressing cognitive symptoms in PD. Profiling PD cognitive phenotypes (e.g., MCI, PDD, etc.) may therefore help inform future treatments. Neurophysiological methods, such as magnetoencephalography (MEG), offer the advantage of observing oscillatory patterns, whose reg

Magnetoencephalography localizing spike sources of atypical benign partial epilepsy.

RATIONALE: Atypical benign partial epilepsy (ABPE) is characterized by centro-temporal electroencephalography (EEG) spikes, continuous spike and waves during sleep (CSWS), and multiple seizure types including epileptic negative myoclonus (ENM), but not tonic seizures. This study evaluated the localization of magnetoencephalography (MEG) spike sources (MEGSSs) to investigate the clinical features and mechanism underlying ABPE. METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed seizure profiles, scalp video EEG (VEEG) and MEG in ABPE patients. RESULTS: Eighteen ABPE patients were identified (nine girls and

Abnormal coherence imaging in panic disorder: a magnetoencephalography investigation.

Increased coherence imaging values, as determined by magnetoencephalography, are indicative of increased neural excitability. The purpose of this investigation was to examine coherence imaging values in patients suffering from panic disorder (PD). We also ascertained whether regions with increased coherence had higher representation in the limbic frontotemporal regions (LFTRs). The highest coherence imaging values and their locations, among 54 Brodmann areas, were determined in six PD patients and six age-matched healthy controls. Magnetoencephalography scans were acquired using 148 magnetomet

Information flow related to visual search assessed using magnetoencephalography.

The sequence of neural activation during a visual search task was investigated using magnetoencephalography and the source locations for the activations were analyzed using a single-dipole algorithm. Five components (M1-5) were detected at mean latencies of 110, 146, 196, 250 and 333 ms in both of two different stimulus conditions; a target popped out in one stimulus condition (pop-out), while it did not in the other condition (non-pop-out). Statistical analysis showed that the M3 amplitude was larger and the M5 latency was shorter in the pop-out condition than in the non-pop-out condition, wh

Impaired visual word processing in dyslexia revealed with magnetoencephalography.

Dyslexia is most often attributed to phonological impairments, manifested in abnormal activation of the left temporal and temporoparietal cortex in response to auditorily presented language and possibly associated with anomalies in the cytoarchitecture and hemispheric symmetry of the plana temporale. The immediate cortical correlate of the severely impaired reading process has, however, remained obscure. Here we report on the distinct time courses of cortical activation in dyslexic and control subjects during passive viewing of single words, tracked with whole-head magnetoencephalography. A st

Somatosensory cortical plasticity in adult humans revealed by magnetoencephalography.

Microelectrode recordings in adult mammals have clearly demonstrated that somatosensory cortical maps reorganize following peripheral nerve injuries and functional modifications; however, such reorganization has never been directly demonstrated in humans. Using magnetoencephalography, we have been able to demonstrate the somatotopic organization of the hand area in normal humans with high spatial precision. Somatosensory cortical plasticity was detected in two adults who were studied before and after surgical separation of webbed fingers (syndactyly). The presurgical maps displayed shrunken an

Magnetoencephalography as a Novel Tool for Prenatal Diagnosis of Fetal Seizures.

Fetal seizures represent one of the rarest phenomena in prenatal medicine, with fewer than 50 documented cases. Diagnosis has traditionally relied on maternal reports and ultrasound visualization of abnormal movements, lacking the neurophysiologic confirmation available in neonatal care. This case report presents the first neurophysiologic assessment of fetal seizures using fetal magnetoencephalography (fMEG), demonstrating a novel diagnostic approach for prenatal neurologic evaluation. A 22-year-old primigravida with controlled epilepsy presented with a fetus showing severe growth restriction

Euphoric effect induced by zolpidem: a case study of magnetoencephalography.

Initially, zolpidem, a non-benzodiazepine hypnotic agent, was considered to have fewer adverse reactions than traditional benzodiazepines. However, after zolpidem was approved for medical use, an increasing number of case reports have described abuse or dependence complications. We were especially interested in the cases of dependence that presented a paradoxical 'euphoric' effect of zolpidem. This article reports the case of a female zolpidem-dependent patient who presented with 6 years of daily use of 400-1400 mg of zolpidem. She reported subjective effects of euphoria, intense craving and t

A magnetoencephalography investigation of coherence source imaging in panic disorder.

Limbic and frontal structures are largely implicated in panic disorder (PD). Decreased coherence imaging values, as determined by magnetoencephalography (MEG), are suggestive of decreased or inefficient communication among these structures. We have previously demonstrated that coherence source imaging (CSI) values could be similar or higher in some PD patients. The purpose of the current investigation was to replicate these finding in a larger sample. Nine strictly diagnosed PD patients and nine age-matched and sex-matched healthy controls were examined. The CSI-MEG values of 26 frontotemporal

The utility of magnetoencephalography in the presurgical evaluation of refractory insular epilepsy.

PURPOSE: To study the utility of magnetoencephalography (MEG) in patients with refractory insular epilepsy. Covered by highly functional temporal, frontal, and parietal opercula, insular-onset seizures can manifest a variety of ictal symptoms falsely leading to a diagnosis of temporal, frontal, or parietal lobe seizures. Lack of recognition of insular seizures may be responsible for some epilepsy surgery failures. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed and analyzed MEG data in 14 patients with refractory insular seizures defined through intracranial electroencephalography (EEG) or by the presen

Magnetoencephalography-based prediction of longitudinal symptom progression in Parkinson's disease.

Motor dysfunction in Parkinson's disease (PD) has been linked to widespread oscillatory changes within the basal ganglia-thalamic-cortical network, particularly in the beta frequency range. However, the evolution of cortical neurophysiological alterations and their relationship to clinical progression remain poorly understood. We conducted a longitudinal resting-state magnetoencephalography (MEG) study in 27 persons with PD and 30 healthy individuals with a mean follow-up time of 4 years. Source-reconstructed MEG data were parcellated into cortical regions, from which power spectra were parame

[Key technologies for intelligent brain-computer interaction based on magnetoencephalography].

Brain-computer interaction (BCI) is a transformative human-computer interaction, which aims to bypass the peripheral nerve and muscle system and directly convert the perception, imagery or thinking activities of cranial nerves into actions for further improving the quality of human life. Magnetoencephalogram (MEG) measures the magnetic field generated by the electrical activity of neurons. It has the unique advantages of non-contact measurement, high temporal and spatial resolution, and convenient preparation. It is a new BCI driving signal. MEG-BCI research has important brain science signifi

Alterations in the Magnetoencephalography Default Mode Effective Connectivity following Concussion.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Magnetoencephalography is sensitive to functional connectivity changes associated with concussion. However, the directional influences between functionally related regions remain unexplored. In this study, we therefore evaluated concussion-related magnetoencephalography-based effective connectivity changes within resting-state default mode network regions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Resting-state magnetoencephalography was acquired for 8 high school football players with concussion at 3 time points (preseason, postconcussion, postseason), as well as 8 high school football

Magnetoencephalography Imaging Reveals Abnormal Information Flow in Temporal Lobe Epilepsy.

Background/Introduction: Widespread network disruption has been hypothesized to be an important predictor of outcomes in patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Most studies examining functional network disruption in epilepsy have largely focused on the symmetric bidirectional metrics of the strength of network connections. However, a more complete description of network dysfunction impacts in epilepsy requires an investigation of the potentially more sensitive directional metrics of information flow. Methods: This study describes a whole-brain magnetoencephalography-imaging app

Mental rotation ability and spontaneous brain activity: a magnetoencephalography study.

We performed experiments using magnetoencephalography to clarify the relationship between three-dimensional visuospatial abilities and spontaneous visual thinking characteristics. Subjects were divided into two groups based on the rate of correct answers to mental rotation tasks: those with good performances (Group G) and those with bad performances (Group B). We found the followings: (1) in the mental rotation tasks, the 25-35 Hz lower γ band activities in the superior parietal lobule/intraparietal sulcus regions and in the occipitotemporal region were significantly larger in Group G than in

Headache frontiers: using magnetoencephalography to investigate pathophysiology of chronic migraine.

Episodic migraine (EM) may evolve into disabling chronic migraine (CM). The progression is elusive but may be underpinned by central excitability change. Recently, several studies have investigated visual cortex excitability in different migraine disorders using magnetoencephalography, a technique superior to traditional scalp electroencephalography in measuring cortical excitability. These studies replicated the earlier visual evoked potential findings that the visual excitability in EM is dynamically modulated, featured by an interictal lack and ictal recovery of the habituation (ie, respons

Magnetoencephalography reveals early activation of V4 in grapheme-color synesthesia.

Grapheme-color synesthesia is a neurological phenomenon in which letters and numbers (graphemes) consistently evoke particular colors (e.g. A may be experienced as red). The cross-activation theory proposes that synesthesia arises as a result of cross-activation between posterior temporal grapheme areas (PTGA) and color processing area V4, while the disinhibited feedback theory proposes that synesthesia arises from disinhibition of pre-existing feedback connections. Here we used magnetoencephalography (MEG) to test whether V4 and PTGA activate nearly simultaneously, as predicted by the cross-a

Electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography study of cortical activities preceding prosaccades and antisaccades.

The temporal and spatial characteristics of brain activity preceding prosaccades and antisaccades were investigated using source reconstructions of 64-channel electroencephalography and 148-channel magnetoencephalography data. Stimulus-locked data showed early cuneus activity was stronger during antisaccades, and later occipital gyrus activity was stronger preceding prosaccades, which suggests a top-down influence on early visual processing. Response-locked data showed that supplementary eye field, prefrontal cortex, and medial frontal eye field activity was greater for antisaccades than for p
