Serum chemokine levels in major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of chemokines of two major chemokine families, CC and CXC, in major depressive disorder (MDD) in a population-based sample. METHOD: The serum levels of CC chemokines MCP-1 and MIP-1beta, and CXC chemokine IL-8 were measured from 122 participants (MDD group, n=61; controls, n=61). Depression severity was assessed with the 29-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale. RESULTS: The MDD group had lower levels of MCP-1, MIP-1beta and IL-8 than the healthy controls. The likelihood of major depressive disorder for participants with chemokine levels below the median (MCP-1

Does major depressive disorder change with age?

BACKGROUND: The authors used results from a 20-year, high-intensity follow-up to measure the influence of ageing, and of age at onset, on the long-term persistence of symptoms in major depressive disorder (MDD). METHOD: Subjects who completed a 20-year series of semi-annual and then annual assessments with a stable diagnosis of MDD or schizo-affective disorder other than mainly schizophrenic (n=220) were divided according to their ages at intake into youngest (18-29 years), middle (30-44 years) and oldest (>45 years) groups. Depressive morbidity was quantified as the proportion of weeks spent

Psychotic symptoms in prepubertal major depressive disorder.

Symptoms of psychosis and psychoticlike phenomena were systematically inquired for, using a semistructured diagnostic interview protocol, in 58 prepubertal children who fulfilled Research Diagnostic Criteria for major depressive disorder. Subjects were classical into endogenous and nonendogenous subtypes. Forty-eight percent of the sample reported hallucinations. Thirty-six percent (including 48% of those in the endogenous subtype and 24% of those in the nonendogenous subtype) reported auditory hallucinations that consisted of one or more words other than their names, experienced in clear cons

Understanding of Depressive Symptomatology across Major Depressive Disorder and Bipolar Disorder: A Network Analysis.

Background and Objectives: Depressive symptoms are prominent in both major depressive disorder (MDD) and bipolar disorder (BD). However, comparative research on the network structure of depressive symptoms in these two diagnostic groups has been limited. This study aims to compare the network structure of depressive symptoms in MDD and BD, providing a deeper understanding of the depressive symptomatology of each disorder. Materials and Methods: The Zung Self-Rating Depressive Scale, a 20-item questionnaire, was administered to assess the depressive symptoms in individuals with MDD (n = 322) an

Does hypomania distinguish bipolar II disorder from major depressive disorder?

BACKGROUND: Recent epidemiological/clinical studies have not found clear boundaries between bipolar II disorder (BP-II) and major depressive disorder (MDD), as subsyndromalhypomanic episodes were more common than syndromalhypomania. The aim of the study was to test if hypomania could still be used to split categorically BP-II and MDD. METHODS: 274 consecutive remitted BP-II and 129 MDD outpatients were interviewed by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV on the most common symptoms and duration of hypomanic episodes (lasting at least 2 days, having at least 2 symptoms), in a private pr

Event centrality in social anxiety disorder and major depressive disorder.

Event centrality is defined by the extent to which a memory of an event has become central to an individual's identity and life story. Previous research predominantly focused on the link between event centrality and trauma-related symptomatology. Nevertheless, it can be argued that the perception of (adverse) events as central to one's self is not exclusive to Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Other disorders where adverse events are linked to the onset of symptoms might also be related to event centrality. This study examined the relevance of event centrality for Social Anxiety Disorder (

Bipolar II disorder and major depressive disorder: continuity or discontinuity?

AIM: To find if bipolar II disorder (BPII) and major depressive disorder (MDD) were distinct categories or overlapping syndromes. METHODS: 308 BPII and 236 MDD outpatients, presenting for major depressive episode (MDE) treatment, were interviewed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV. History of mania and hypomania, and hypomanic symptoms present during MDE, were systematically investigated. Presence of zones of rarity between BPII and MDD depressive syndromes was assessed. Atypical and hypomanic symptoms were chosen because atypical features and depressive mixed state (ie, MDE pl

The role of educational attainment and brain morphology in major depressive disorder: Findings from the ENIGMA major depressive disorder consortium.

Brain structural abnormalities and low educational attainment are consistently associated with major depressive disorder (MDD), yet there has been little research investigating the complex interaction of these factors. Brain structural alterations may represent a vulnerability or differential susceptibility marker, and in the context of low educational attainment, predict MDD. We tested this moderation model in a large multisite sample of 1958 adults with MDD and 2921 controls (aged 18 to 86) from the ENIGMA MDD working group. Using generalized linear mixed models and within-sample split-half

Major depressive disorder in chronic heart failure patients: Does silent cerebral infarction cause major depressive disorder in this patient population?

OBJECTIVE: Depression frequently occurs in patients with heart failure as similar pathophysiological mechanisms present in both these diseases. Patients with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) have a high incidence of clinically asymptomatic silent cerebral infarction (SCI). This study aimed to evaluate the relation between SCI and major depressive disorder (MDD), and between MDD and clinical and biochemical parameters in DCM patients. METHODS: Patients with ischemic and non-ischemic DCM who had chronic heart failure (CHF) (39 male, 10 female, age 60±10 years) were included in the study. Mean patie

Quantitative separation of the depressive phase of bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder using electrovestibulography.

Objectives: No electrophysiological, neuroimaging or genetic markers have been established that strongly relate to the diagnostic separation of bipolar disorder (BD) and major depressive disorder (MDD). This paper's objective is to describe the potential of features, extracted from the recording of electrical activity from the outer ear canal, in a process called electrovestibulography (EVestG), for identifying depressed and partly remitted/remitted MDD and BD patients from each other. Methods: From EVestG data four sensory vestibulo-acoustic features were extracted from both background (no mov

REM sleep microarchitecture in adolescent major depressive disorder.

Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep abnormalities in adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) remain poorly characterized. Although previous work has reported altered eye-movement density and burst dynamics, findings are inconsistent, and few studies have examined the distinct phasic and tonic microstates of REM sleep, each defined by unique neurophysiological signatures. Here, we investigated REM microarchitecture and its association with depressive symptom change using a sleep delay challenge (SDC), an experimental paradigm that delays bedtime by three hours while maintaining total sleep

Mechanistic intersections between migraine and major depressive disorder.

It has long been recognized that there are comorbidities between migraine and psychiatric disorders, especially major depressive disorder (MDD). Often this relationship is attributed to the psychological risk of having an intermittent debilitating disorder that causes a great deal of suffering. However, as evidence mounts about the mechanisms underlying each disorder, mechanistic overlap is beginning to emerge that suggests some shared underlying etiology. These findings span biochemical, genetic, physiological, neuroanatomical, and environmental levels of analysis. Here we review evidence for

MDDOmics: multi-omics resource of major depressive disorder.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a pressing global health issue. Its pathogenesis remains elusive, but numerous studies have revealed its intricate associations with various biological factors. Consequently, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive multi-omics resource to help researchers in conducting multi-omics data analysis for MDD. To address this issue, we constructed the MDDOmics database (Major Depressive Disorder Omics, (https://www.csuligroup.com/MDDOmics/), which integrates an extensive collection of published multi-omics data related to MDD. The database contains 41 222 entrie
