Malassezia dermatitis in dogs and cats.

Malassezia are members of the mycobiome of dogs and cats. In the presence of an underlying disease, these yeasts can proliferate, attach to the skin or mucosa to induce a secondary Malassezia dermatitis, otitis externa or paronychia. Since allergic dermatitis is one of the most common underlying causes, diagnostic investigation for allergy is often indicated. Cats may suffer from various other underlying problems, especially where Malassezia dermatitis is generalised. Malassezia dermatitis in dogs and cats is chronic, relapsing and pruritic. Direct cytology from dermatological lesions and the …

Malassezia pachydermatis keratomycosis in a dog.

A 13-year-old female Lhasa Apso was presented for blepharospasm and conjunctival hyperemia of the right eye. Ophthalmic examination revealed an anterior stromal ulcer associated with a raised yellow corneal plaque. In vivo confocal microscopy and cytology of the cornea identified neutrophilic inflammation and yeast cells. Malassezia pachydermatis was isolated from a corneal scraping. Treatment with topical voriconazole ophthalmic solution resolved the keratitis.

Fungi on the skin: dermatophytes and Malassezia.

Several human skin diseases and disorders are associated with two groups of fungi, the dermatophytes and Malassezia. Although these skin-related problems are not generally life threatening, they are among the most common diseases and disorders of mankind. These fungi are phylogenetically divergent, with the dermatophytes within the Ascomycota and Malassezia within Basidiomycota. Genome analysis indicates that the adaptations to the skin environment are different in these two groups of fungi. Malassezia are dependent on host lipids and secrete lipases and phospholipases that likely release host…

Elevated levels of IgG and IgG4 to Malassezia allergens in atopic eczema patients with IgE reactivity to Malassezia.

BACKGROUND: The opportunistic yeast Malassezia is considered to be one of the factors that can contribute to atopic eczema (AE). Elevated serum IgE levels, T-cell proliferation and positive skin prick test (SPT) and atopy patch test (APT) reactions to Malassezia are found among AE patients. METHODS: Sera from 127 AE patients, 14 patients with seborrheic dermatitis (SD) and 33 healthy controls were investigated for IgE and IgG4 to M. sympodialis extract and four recombinant Malassezia allergens; rMala s 1, rMala s 5, rMala s 6, and rMala s 9. In addition, IgG to the recombinant allergens was a…

Chronic Diseases Associated with Malassezia Yeast.

Malassezia are a lipid-dependent basidiomycetous yeast of the normal skin microbiome, although Malassezia DNA has been recently detected in other body sites and has been associated with certain chronic human diseases. This new perspective raises many questions. Are these yeasts truly present in the investigated body site or were they contaminated by other body sites, adjacent or not? Does this DNA contamination come from living or dead yeast? If these yeasts are alive, do they belong to the resident mycobiota or are they transient colonizers which are not permanently established within these n…

[Malassezia. Current knowledge and study perspectives].

The study of Malassezia has been postponed for many years due to its nutritional requirements and its morphological variability. Molecular biology methods led to a taxonomic revision of this genus and to a new interest for its clinical importance. Nowadays, 11 Malassezia species are known, 10 are lipophilic, having similar morphological, physiological and biochemical characteristics, therefore, conventional techniques are not useful to differentiating them. Molecular methods are an accurate tool in the identification and they lead to a better knowledge of the ecology and epidemiology of this g…

Malassezia furfur in infantile seborrheic dermatitis.

Our objective was to study both incidence and various strains of Malassezia in infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD). Sixty infants between 2 weeks and 2 years old with clinical diagnosis of ISD at the Department of Pediatrics, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital from May 2002 to April 2003 were recruited. Malassezia spp. were isolated from cultured skin samples of the patients, genomic DNA was extracted and the ITS1 rDNA region was amplified. The PCR product was examined by agarose gel electrophoresis and DNA sequences were determined. The ITS1 sequences were also subjected to phylogenetic a…

[Malassezia fungal blepharitis: a case report].

PURPOSE: Blepharitis is a very common disorder but the role of certain mycoses in the etiopathogenesis of blepharitis remains controversial. … r the treatment was discontinued. Bacteriological and fungal exams were conducted, showing numerous Malassezia furfur spores and hyphae. Given that there was no antifungal eye drop preparation on the market, topical ketoconazole (Nizoral) was prescribed. Two weeks later, the condition had cleared, with no recurrence after 5 months of follow-up. DISCUSSION: …

Skin diseases associated with Malassezia species.

The yeasts of the genus Malassezia have been associated with a number of diseases affecting the human skin, such as pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia (Pityrosporum) folliculitis, seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff, atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, and--less commonly--with other dermatologic disorders such as confluent and reticulated papillomatosis, onychomycosis, and transient acantholytic dermatosis. Although Malassezia yeasts are a part of the normal microflora, under certain conditions they can cause superficial skin infection. The study of the clinical role of Malassezia species has been sur…

IgE-reactivity to seven Malassezia species.

BACKGROUND: Malassezia yeasts play a role in the pathogenesis of atopic eczema/dermatitis syndrome (AEDS). The revised genus Malassezia includes several species which all are natural habitants of the human skin. In this study, we evaluated the presence of immunoglobulin E (IgE) antibodies to different Malassezia spp. in AEDS patients to allow optimization of the characterization of the IgE antibody profile of IgE-associated AEDS. METHODS: Ninety-six adult patients, with a clinical diagnosis of AEDS, were included in the study. Seventeen of the patients had IgE antibodies to M. sympodialis, AT…

Intracardiac mass complicating Malassezia furfur fungemia.

Malassezia furfur is a lipophilic yeast known to colonize indwelling catheters. Although progression to vasculitis and sepsis has been described, it has rarely caused fungemia in adults receiving nutrition via an indwelling catheter. Difficulty in diagnosis occurs as M furfur does not grow on routine culture media unless it is supplemented with fatty acids. We present the first case of M furfur fungemia in an adult, complicated by a pedunculated septic thrombus arising from the superior vena cava and extending into the right atrium. Removal of the catheter, amphotericin-B therapy, and surgical…

Malassezia furfur in infantile seborrheic dermatitis.

Malassezia furfur is important in the pathogenesis of a number of dermatologic diseases including seborrheic dermatitis in adults. It has also recently been suggested that M. furfur might be the etiologic agent in infantile seborrheic dermatitis (ISD). We studied the presence of M. furfur in 21 children with the clinical diagnosis of infantile seborrheic dermatitis. Laboratory analyses showed aberrant patterns of essential fatty acids (EFA) in serum characterized by elevated levels of 18:1w9 and 20:2w6. Samples for M. furfur were taken from the foreheads and chests of children with infantile s…

Human infections due to Malassezia spp.

The genus Malassezia contains three member species: Malassezia furfur and Malassezia sympodialis, both obligatory lipophilic, skin flora yeasts of humans, and Malassezia pachydermatis, a nonobligatory lipophilic, skin flora yeast of other warm-blooded animals. Several characteristics suggest the basidiomycetous nature of these yeasts, although a perfect stage has not been identified. Classically, these organisms are associated with superficial infections of the skin and associated structures, including pityriasis versicolor and folliculitis. Recently, however, they have been reported as agents…

[Onyxis caused by Malassezia (Pityrosporum) ovalis].

Onychia by Malassezia ovalis are described for the first time. They are observed mainly on the hands of young or adult women with semiological characteristics of aphlegmatic onycholysis. In clinical materials M. ovalis is seen as yeasts only or as yeasts and typical hyphae. Cultures are easily obtained on Sabouraud medium containing 2% of bile. It is thought that these lesions are example of an opportunistic mycosis since predisposing local factors are almost always present. Oral or topic treatment with imidazole derivatives has shown to be effective.

Cutaneous Malassezia: Commensal, Pathogen, or Protector?

The skin microbial community is a multifunctional ecosystem aiding prevention of infections from transient pathogens, maintenance of host immune homeostasis, and skin health. A better understanding of the complex milieu of microbe-microbe and host-microbe interactions will be required to define the ecosystem's optimal function and enable rational design of microbiome targeted interventions. Malassezia, a fungal genus currently comprising 18 species and numerous functionally distinct strains, are lipid-dependent basidiomycetous yeasts and integral components of the skin microbiome. The high pro…

Antifungal susceptibility of Malassezia pachydermatis biofilm.

Antifungal resistance has been associated with biofilm formation in many microorganisms, but not yet in Malassezia pachydermatis. This saprophytic yeast can cause otitis and dermatitis in dogs and has emerged as an important human pathogen, responsible for systemic infections in neonates in intensive care units. This study aims to evaluate the in vitro antifungal susceptibility of M. pachydermatis strains, in both their planktonic and sessile forms, to fluconazole, miconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole, posaconazole, terbinafine and voriconazole using the XTT assay and Clinical and Laboratory…

Putative Malassezia dermatitis in six goats.

Histopathology submissions from 28 goats with dermatological disease were identified in an archival search of pathology files. Microscopic sections of skin biopsy specimens were examined for the presence of Malassezia spp. organisms. Six cases with many Malassezia yeasts were identified histopathologically. Based on the extent of clinical disease, three cases were regarded as localized and three were generalized infections. Clinical findings included alopecia with dry seborrhoea (four cases), greasy seborrhoea (one case), and no clinical findings specific to localized Malassezia infection when…

Minireview: Malassezia infections in immunocompromised patients.

Malassezia spp. form part of the normal human cutaneous flora and are implicated in several mild, but recurrent cutaneous diseases, such as pityriasis versicolor, Malassezia folliculitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, and, with lesser frequency, a range of other dermatological disorders. Malassezia spp. have also been associated with cutaneous and systemic diseases in immunocompromised patients including folliculitis, seborrhoeic dermatitis, catheter-related fungaemia and a variety of deeply invasive infections. In this review, we provide an overview of the epidemiology, risk factors, pathogenesis, …

[Pityriasis versicolor due to Malassezia ovalis].

In a randomly collected series of 175 cases of pityriasis versicolor in residents of the central-northern part of Venezuela, 13% of the patients were infected with ovoid unicellular units of the causal fungus (Malassezia ovalis) and 87% with globous unicellular units in the scales (M. furfur). Only globous unicellular units (Pityrosporum orbiculare) were seen outside the active lesions and in these, after the successful treatment with ketoconazole. The median age of 40 'ovalis' patients was 37.5 years; the same in 40 'furfur' patients was 24.5 years. The median age at the moment of discovering…
