Although inflammation protects our bodies against harmful stimuli, uncontrolled inflammation drives serious chronic disorders. Malva parviflora L. (family Malvaceae) may represent a source for anti-inflammatory metabolites based on its potent anti-inflammatory activity. Its total ethanol extract demonstrated notable inhibition of cyclooxygenase-1/2 (COX-1/COX-2) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX), with IC50 values comparable to those of the reference drugs indomethacin and zileuton, respectively. The hexane fraction was the most active fraction (lowest IC₅₀) among the solvent partitions (dichlorometha

A new virus, named Mutum virus, related to members of the family Tymoviridae, was isolated from mosquitoes (Mansonia spp.) in clone C6/36 cells, and its complete genome was sequenced. Its genome is 6494 nt in size with an organization resembling that of tymovirids. The isolated virus is phylogenetically related to two viruses isolated from Culex spp. mosquitoes: Ek Balam virus, reported in Mexico, and Culex-originated Tymoviridae-like virus, isolated in China. The results of this study suggest that this virus is a new member of the family Tymoviridae.

The hitherto unknown role of saponin in the regulation of thyrotoxicosis has been revealed in chemically-induced thyrotoxic rats. l-T4 (l-thyroxine) administration at pre-standardized dose of 500-μg/kg body weight for 12days increased the levels of thyroid hormones, enhanced the activity of hepatic 5'-monodeiodinase I (5'DI) and glucose-6-phosphatase (G-6Pase) as well as lipid peroxidation (LPO) with a parallel decrease in the levels of antioxidative enzymes. However, administration of the isolated saponin for 15days ameliorated the T4-induced alterations in serum thyroid hormones, hepatic LPO

BACKGROUND: Recent data from Ghana indicates that after seven rounds of annual mass drug administration (MDA) there is still sustained transmission albeit at low levels in certain areas where Anopheles melas, An. gambiae s.s., Mansonia and Culex species are the main biting mosquitoes. Anopheles gambiae s.l. and An. funestus are the known vectors in Ghana and a recent report indicated that An. melas could transmit at low level microfilaraemia. However, because An. melas is not found everywhere there was the need to determine whether any of the other culicine species could also be playing a role

Natural excipients can serve as alternative to synthetic products because of local accessibility, biodegradability, eco-friendly nature and cost effectiveness as compared to synthetic products. Therefore, it is a current need to explore natural excipients that can be used as an effective alternative excipient for the formulation of pharmaceutical dosage forms. Adansonia digitata (Malvaceae) has been traditionally used as febrifuge, antiasthmatic and also in the treatment of dysentery, smallpox, and measles. Reports have indicated that mucilage of the leaves of the plant is edible and nontoxic;

The effects of Pseudomonas putida ATH2-1RI/9 and Acidovorax delafieldii ATH2-2RS/1 on rhizosphere colonization, cyanide production, and growth of velvetleaf and corn was examined. When formulated in alginate beads and inoculated onto velvetleaf and corn plants (10(9) CFU/plant), only P. putida ATH2-1RI/9 consistently reduced velvetleaf growth. Neither isolate inhibited corn growth. Interestingly the levels of P. putida ATH2-1RI/9 in the velvetleaf rhizosphere were 1000-fold higher (7 x 10(7) CFU/g root) than the A. delafieldii ATH2-2RS/1 populations. Cyanide (53-68 mM/g root) was recovered fro

The genus Malvastrum, from the family Malvaceae, is a small genus of twenty four species, distributed worldwide. Some of the species have a long and rich history of ethnobotanical and traditional medicinal uses. Few reports of systematic scientific studies can be found in the literature which highlight the rich chemical profile and pharmacological properties of the genus. This is the first ever attempt to compile the available literature and provide a critical overview for future studies on the genus. For this purpose, several databases, such as PubMed, Scifinder, Elsevier, Google Scholar, and

A fundamental understanding of plant sugar feeding behaviour in vector populations can lead to the development of ecologically effective vector monitoring and control strategies. Despite previous studies on mosquito-plant interactions, relatively few have been conducted on the dengue vector Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae). The authors studied Ae. aegypti-plant interactions at two sites of varying dengue endemicity in Kenya: Kilifi (endemic) and Isiolo (non-endemic). Using chemical and molecular assays [DNA barcoding targeting the chloroplast ribulose-1,5 bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase l

In this study, we aimed to elucidate the defense mechanism of Alcea rosea (Linn.) Cavan. and Hydrangea macrophylla (Thunb.) Ser. against the single and compound toxicity of lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) along with the synergistic effect of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) in accumulation of metals in these two species. The two plant species were subjected to single metal treatment (Pb 1000 mg kg-1, Zn 600 mg kg-1) and compound metal treatment (Pb 1000 mg kg-1 + Zn 600 mg kg-1) in a greenhouse. Besides, different levels of EDTA were applied (2.5, 5.0, and 10.0 mmol kg-1) with compound metal tre
