Evaluation of the mandibular canal and the third mandibular molar relationship by CBCT with a deep learning approach.

OBJECTIVE: The mandibular canal (MC) houses the inferior alveolar nerve. Extraction of the mandibular third molar (MM3) is a common dental surgery, often complicated by nerve damage. CBCT is the most effective imaging method to assess the relationship between MM3 and MC. With advancements in artificial intelligence, deep learning has shown promising results in dentistry. The aim of this study is to evaluate the MC-MM3 relationship using CBCT and a deep learning technique, as well as to automatically segment the mandibular impacted third molar, mandibular canal, mental and mandibular foramen.

Recurrence Rates for Mandibular Fibrosarcoma Associated With Mandibular Canal Invasion Following Mandibulectomy Procedures in Dogs.

Oral fibrosarcoma is a highly invasive tumour with local recurrence rates of up to 57.9% following surgical excision. The optimal surgical margins for long-term local control of oral fibrosarcoma have not been ascertained, especially when tumour invasion into the mandibular canal is present. The objective of this study was to evaluate the recurrence of mandibular fibrosarcoma in dogs following mandibulectomy procedures based on the presence or absence of mandibular canal invasion. Medical records of dogs that underwent a mandibulectomy for fibrosarcoma between January 2005 and December 2023 at

The spatial location of the mandibular canal in Chinese: a CT study.

The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is vulnerable to injury from mandible fractures and surgical procedures so anatomical variations of IAN are important. Postoperative sensory alteration of the lip and chin region is high after mandibular orthognathic surgery. The incidence of IAN paresthesia following sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) ranges from 54% to 86% at 4-8 days, 41 to 75% at 1 month, 33 to 66% at 3 months, 17 to 58% at 6 months and 15 to 33% at 1 year postoperatively. This study determined the anatomical position of the mandibular canal in relation to cortical bone and molar teeth

[Modern scientific trends in the study of mandibular canal anatomy].

A study of the scientific literature on the topographical and anatomical features of the mandibular canal (canalis mandibulae) has been conducted with the priority of searching for classical dissection anatomical experiments. Scientific achievements of recent years have been identified: the microstructure of bone walls throughout the canal has been studied, the intracanal functional organization of the neurovascular bundle has been studied, variants of the position of the inferior alveolar artery in relation to the inferior alveolar nerve have been studied, and the microcirculatory bed has bee

The inferior alveolar nerve and its relationship to the mandibular canal.

Previous work on the mandibular canal, mental foramen, and mandibular foramen has focused on humans and some other non-primate mammals (with small sample sizes), but little work has investigated the mandibular canal and inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) across primates. However, it is important to understand the relationship between the IAN and mandibular canal due to the IAN's close relationship to the teeth and mastication, and thus dietary adaptations. While it is assumed that most bony canals within the skull grow around and form to pre-existing nervous structures, this relationship has never

Endodontic therapy in a mandibular second bicuspid with four canals.

Success in endodontic therapy often depends on the removal of the critical concentration of pulp tissue or necrotic debris within the root canal system. The best method to ensure this objective is to locate and instrument all of the canals in the root of the tooth. Therefore, a thorough knowledge of root canal morphology is essential to reduce the chances of failure. The purpose of this article is to report a case of mandibular second bicuspid with four distinct canals.

[Anatomic-roentgenologic study of the mandibular canal in atrophic mandible].

This study analyses the changes observed with atrophy of the mandibular foramen and mental foramen, as well as the mandibular canal. All 43 left halves of the examined mandibles were systematized according to the classification of the reduction of residual ridges by Atwood. This classification allows a precise description of the rate of atrophy. An evaluation of the results of computed tomography and X-ray, as well as measurements of the mandibles showed a number of significant atrophic changes. With extreme reduction of residual ridges the mental canal is significantly shortened. Increasing a

[Microscopic root canal treatment of fused mandibular molar with seven root canals: a case report].

Fused teeth are usually formed by the partial or complete fusion of two normal tooth germs during the development process and belong to dental developmental abnormalities. Fused teeth are relatively rare clinically, and those occurring in the posterior tooth area are even rarer. This article reports a case of fused teeth between the first permanent molar and the second permanent molar in the right mandible. This fused tooth had a complex root canal anatomical structure (seven root canals). The number and location of the root canals were analyzed by cone beam computed tomography, and root canal

Incidence of Middle Mesial Canals in Mandibular Molars during Root Canal Treatment and Nonsurgical Retreatment.

INTRODUCTION: Large-scale clinical studies on the incidence of middle mesial canals (MMCs) in nonsurgical root canal treatment (RCT) and retreatment of mandibular molars are lacking. The primary aim of this observational study was to determine the incidence of MMCs in mandibular first and second molars that received RCT or nonsurgical retreatment (NSRetx). The secondary aim was to determine factors associated with incidence of MMCs. METHODS: Included were 3018 mandibular molars that received RCT (n = 1624) or NSRetx (n = 1394) by 3 endodontists in a private practice. Demographic and procedura

Root canal configuration and the prevalence of C-shaped canals in mandibular second molars in an Iranian population.

A total of 139 extracted mandibular second molars were injected with India ink and demineralized. They were made clear and transparent with methyl salicylate, and the anatomy of their canals was studied. It was found that 86.3% of mandibular second molars had two roots, 9.3% had one root, and 4.3% had three roots. Ninety percent of the mesial roots of the mandibular second molars with two roots had two canals (predominantly with a type II or III configuration), and 77.5% of the distal roots of these teeth had one canal (predominantly with a type I configuration). Among the mandibular second mo

Automatic segmentation of mandibular canal using transformer based neural networks.

Accurate 3D localization of the mandibular canal is crucial for the success of digitally-assisted dental surgeries. Damage to the mandibular canal may result in severe consequences for the patient, including acute pain, numbness, or even facial paralysis. As such, the development of a fast, stable, and highly precise method for mandibular canal segmentation is paramount for enhancing the success rate of dental surgical procedures. Nonetheless, the task of mandibular canal segmentation is fraught with challenges, including a severe imbalance between positive and negative samples and indistinct
