Bifid mandibular condyle: a rare disorder.

Bifid mandibular condyle is a rare disorder and little is known about the etiology and pathogenesis. We reported a patient with left bifid mandibular condyle with a history of trauma. There was no limitation of mouth opening but the patient was complaining of pain while chewing. Underdeveloped lateral head of the bifid condyle was excised at the level of condylar neck under general anesthesia. The patient healed without any problem. Microscopic evaluation of the excised condyle supported a congenital etiology. Although most cases of the bifid condyle discovered by chance it should be recognize

Trifid mandibular condyle: A case report.

A few cases of bifid, but no case of trifid mandibular condyle, have been reported in the literature. This article presents the first reported case of trifid mandibular condyle in a living subject with a history of previous trauma to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Additionally, the patient's other condyle was bifid. The patient had no complaint related to the functions of TMJ except for minimal weakness following chewing. The etiology and the prognosis of bifid and trifid condyle are discussed briefly. We considered computed tomography essential to rule out early stages of TMJ pathology in

[Clinical study of mandibular condyle injury].

Mandibular condyle fractures develop frequently and show the variable type of injury and complication. New opinions have emerged from recent investigation into condylar fractures. The author investigated 246 patients with condylar fractures who visited SNUDH from January 1980 to August, 1988, 8. with regard to clinical and treatment aspects, area and displacement of fractures, associated teeth injury and other body injury, complications. At last I have got the following results. 1. The incidence to condylar fractures in a series of 765 mandibular fractures may be as high as 32.2%. 2. The male

Ectopic Tooth in Mandibular Canal, Maxillary Sinus, and Mandibular Condyle.

Eruption of tooth into place other than tooth-bearing region is defined as ectopic eruption. Although ectopic eruption of tooth is rare, there have been cases in the maxillary sinus, mandibular condyle, nasal cavity, chin, palate, and orbital floor. Due to ectopic teeth's rarity and lack of consensus for ıts treatment, incidence was entitled to be added to literature and discussed. It was reported that odontogenic tumors and cysts can develop around the ectopic tooth. Thus, ectopic teeth can be followed up regularly in case of no signs and symptoms. If the patient has unusual orofacial pain, u

Comprehensive assessment of mandibular condyle adaptation following mandibular advancement versus mandibular setback surgery.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed primarily to evaluate three-dimensionally the alteration in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) at short- and long-term follow-up after mandibular advancement (MAS) and mandibular setback (MSS) surgeries; secondarily to compare these changes between the two surgical interventions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-six patients (92 TMJs) were analyzed: 23 patients underwent MAS, and 23 patients received MSS. Computed tomography scans were obtained preoperatively (T0), within one week postoperatively (T1), and at two years postoperatively (T2). A validated three-dimensional

Rehabilitation in the treatment of mandibular condyle fractures.

BACKGROUND: The objective of rehabilitation after the treatment of a mandibular condyle fracture is to retrieve the effortless, symmetrical opening of the jaws with the preservation of appropriate movements to the sides, and appropriate occlusion without a sense of tension in the mastication muscles or pain sensations. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the article was to establish the conditions of the rehabilitation of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) after the surgical treatment of a fractured condyle. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The research featured 46 of patients treated surgically between January 2, 2017

3D Auto-Segmentation of Mandibular Condyles.

Temporomandibular joints (TMJ) like a hinge connect the jawbone to the skull. TMJ disorders could cause pain in the jaw joint and the muscles controlling jaw movement. However, the disease cannot be diagnosed until it becomes symptomatic. It has been shown that bone resorption at the condyle articular surface is already evident at initial diagnosis of TMJ Osteoarthritis (OA). Therefore, analyzing the bone structure will facilitate the disease diagnosis. The important step towards this analysis is the condyle segmentation. This article deals with a method to automatically segment the temporoman

Metastasis in the mandibular condyle: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Most bone metastases are observed in the trunk of the body. Metastasis in the mandibular condyle is rare. In many case reports, temporary common temporomandibular joint disorder-like symptoms can be a sign of relapse and metastasis. CASE PRESENTATION: We report a rare case of breast carcinoma metastatic to the left mandibular condyle in a 55-year-old Japanese woman, who visited our department for a dental check-up prior to chemotherapy. She had almost no symptoms, but radiographs suggested the existence of metastasis. CONCLUSIONS: In many case reports, patients had some symptoms.

[Conservative surgery for a mandibular condyle osteochondroma].

INTRODUCTION: Osteochondroma is a rare benign bone tumor of the mandibular condyle (90 cases reported). The symptoms are similar to those of temporomandibular joint disorders: painful temporomandibular joint, joint sounds, and modification of dental occlusion. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old female patient consulted for a wide left laterodeviation of the mandible. CT scan revealed a 27 mm long bony growth on the condyle. The condyle neck was osteotomized, then the tumor and condyle head were split, the condyle was then remodeled and osteosynthesized on the condyle neck. The functional and esthetic

Classification of surgical approaches to the mandibular condyle.

Published articles on surgical approaches to the mandibular condyle seem to be confusing. We present a classification system that describes and differentiates between surgical approaches to the mandibular condyle and is based on the relation to the facial nerve, height of the approach, and choice of skin incision.

[Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle. Apropos of a case].

The authors report a case of mandibular condyle osteochondroma on a 33 years-old woman, similar to osteocartilaginous exostosis of the long bones. The lesion was revealed by a facial asymmetry and a change of the occlusion. The diagnosis was performed on the computed-tomography examination and histopathology. The removal of the lesion has conserved the condyle without recurrence after 20 months following-up. The authors remind the uncommonly location of osteochondroma in the facial skeleton and discuss the histogenesis of this lesion in its mandibular condyle site.

Primary bone cyst of the mandibular condyle.

Cysts of the mandibular condyle are rare and their diagnosis and treatment can be difficult. A case in a young girl is described where the histology was that of a solitary bone cyst but the presentation and behaviour more closely resembled an aneurysmal bone cyst.

Are you overlooking fractures of the mandibular condyle?

Fractures of mandibular condyle may be overlooked because attention is often focused on readily apparent soft tissue injury such as lacerations and abrasions. Clinical and radiographic signs are often subtle, but the injuries caused by rapid deceleration and listed in Table 2 will serve to alert the pediatrician to the possibility of such fractures. All children in these circumstances should be carefully examined for dental occlusion and the preauricular area palpated to help formulate a clinical diagnosis. Additional evidence is gained from the finding of deviation or limitation of the jaw up

A solitary bone cyst of the mandibular condyle.

A review of the literature concerning solitary bone cysts of the jaws is presented. Our patient is typical except for the location of the cyst. No previous case of a solitary bone cyst confirmed to the mandibular condyle has been reported. No precise etiology for solitary bone cyst is known. The use of routine panoramic radiography has made detection of such cysts more common. Surgical exploration is indicated for diagnosis and treatment.

Bifid mandibular condyles: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) constitutes an extremely rare disorder characterized by a duplication of the head of the mandibular condyle. Its prevalence ranges from 0.31% to 1.82% in the published literature. OBJECTIVES: The primary objective was to describe the main etiological, clinical and radiological characteristics of patients with BMCs and the existent treatment options. The secondary objective was to simultaneously include the characteristics of two new cases of BMC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An electronic search in Pubmed (MEDLINE), Scopus and The Cochrane Library was carr

Interventions for the treatment of fractures of the mandibular condyle.

BACKGROUND: Fractures of the condylar process account for between 25% and 35% of all mandibular fractures. Treatment options for fractures of the condyles consist of either the closed method or by open reduction with fixation. Complications may be associated with either treatment option; for the closed approach these can include malocclusion, particularly open bites, reduced posterior facial height and facial asymmetry in addition to chronic pain and reduced mobility. A cutaneous scar and temporary paralysis of the facial nerve are not infrequent complications associated with the open approach

[Aneurysmal bone cyst of the mandibular condyle].

INTRODUCTION: Aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) is a pseudotumor of bone consisting of a septated cystic cavity filled with blood. CASE: We report a case of aneurysmal bone cyst of the left mandibular condyle discovered in a 10-year-old child with a history of mandibular trauma which had occurred one year earlier. The treatment consisted in surgical excision of the lesion and reconstruction using a chondro-costal graft. The post operative development led to a chondral hyperplasia. DISCUSSION: We discuss the pathogenesis of the ABC centered on three theories, traumatic, vascular and tumoral of prima
