Vaso-occlusive Pain Crisis Mimicking Mandibular Abscess in an Adolescent with Sickle Cell Disease.

In people with sickle cell disease (SCD), oral abscesses are concerning clinical conditions and carry a high risk of postoperative sickle cell complications. We present an unusual case of a 14-year-old girl with SCD whose initial presentation of facial swelling, headaches, jaw pain, and paresthesia mimicked an odontogenic abscess. She was diagnosed with vaso-occlusive crisis in the mandibular bone and successfully managed noninvasively. This is among the youngest cases of paresthesia in the lower lip in SCD, which provided a clue that postponing invasive aspiration or biopsy was possible under

Influence of the period after ovariectomy on femoral and mandibular bone density and on induced periodontal disease.

BACKGROUND: This study investigated the influence of the period after ovariectomy on femoral and mandibular bone mineral density (BMD) and on induced periodontal disease. METHODS: One hundred and twenty-six female Holtzman rats were divided into nine groups: control, sham surgery (SHAM) with and without induction of periodontal disease for 51 and 150 days, and ovariectomy (OVX) with and without induction of periodontal disease for 51 and 150 days. Periodontal disease was induced by placing ligatures on the first lower molars during the last 30 days of each period. BMD was measured by dual-ene

Erdheim-Chester disease with prominent pulmonary involvement associated with eosinophilic granuloma of mandibular bone.

We report a patient with eosinophilic granuloma localized to the left mandible who was subsequently shown to have Erdheim-Chester disease involving the lower extremities, omentum and lung. The diagnosis of eosinophilic granuloma was based on the presence of typical CD1a+ Langerhans' cell granulomas in a biopsy of mandible. The diagnosis of Erdheim-Chester disease was established on the basis of the pattern of radioisotopic uptake by long bones, seen on a technetium bone scan, and the presence of characteristic histopathological features in biopsies of lung and peritoneum. The pathological find

Prevalence of disease associated with horizontal and mesioangular-impacted mandibular third molars in relation to age.

Background The management of impacted mandibular third molars (M3Ms) has been an area of contention over the last 25 years. This study investigated the prevalence of disease processes in relation to age for a sample of patients with horizontal and mesioangular M3Ms.Method All concomitant disease processes including probing pocket depths (PPDs) and alveolar bone loss (ABL) distal to mandibular second molars (M2Ms) were recorded from a sample of 400 patients. Results From 536 M3M/M2M interfaces, 41% (n = 219) had a disease process present on the distal surface of the M2M and 11% (n = 61) had such

Gorham's disease: a report of a case with mandibular involvement in a 10-year follow-up study.

Gorham's disease, or vanishing bone disease, is a rare condition of unknown aetiology. Any bone of the body can be affected, although there is a predilection for the pelvis, humerus, axial skeleton and the mandible. The mandible is the most commonly involved bone in the maxillofacial region. 41 cases have been reported so far in the literature showing involvement of the mandible in Gorham's disease. This paper presents a rare case of Gorham's disease involving the mandible in a 38-year-old male with a 10-year follow-up.

Mandibular pain as the leading clinical symptom for metastatic disease: nine cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Metastases to the jaws are a rare phenomenon. Nevertheless, the appearance of non-specific symptoms such as toothache can signal the onset of neoplastic disease in some patients. PATIENTS: In this article, we present details of a 74-year-old patient with a history of breast cancer to illustrate this point. Retrospectively, covering a time span of one year, we could identify nine patients (1.2%) with metastatic disease to the mandible out of a total of 763 patients referred to our Maxillofacial Surgery department with non-specific jaw pain. RESULTS: Four patients were subsequently

Prevalence of nutrient canals in mandibular anterior intra-oral periapical radiographs (IOPARS) in patients with chronic systemic diseases - a cross-sectional study.

Nutrient canals (NCs) are passages containing neurovascular bundles (blood vessels, lymph vessels, and nerves). Best visualized on mandibular anterior intraoral periapical radiographs (IOPAR), their presence is usually associated with underlying pathological such as diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), advanced periodontitis, calcium deficiency, tuberculosis, and disuse atrophy. This study aimed to (a) evaluate NC prevalence in patients with DM, HTN, and chronic periodontitis and (b) correlate the detection of NCs as an important preliminary screening tool for inherent systemic diseases

Predictors of disease alleviation with mandibular advancement devices in obstructive sleep apnea: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) can be treated with mandibular advancement devices (MAD), preventing collapse of the upper airway and decreasing apnea-hypopnea index (AHI)/ h. Disease alleviation is expected to vary depending on specific predictors including OSA-severity and cephalometric parameters. This retrospective cohort study aimed to identify predictors of disease alleviation with MAD in adult patients with mild to moderate and severe OSA. Secondary outcomes included assessing the necessity of lateral cephalograms and the therapeutic success in severe OSA-cases. METHODS: OSA-

Correction of collapsed occlusion with degenerative joint disease focused on the mandibular arch and timely relocation of a miniplate.

This report describes a novel concept of 3-dimensional tooth movement by using biocreative therapy to provide unrestricted distal movement of the full mandibular dentition. The patient was a 26-year-old Korean woman with multiple problems, including a collapsed occlusion, a full-step Class III relationship with posterior open bite, a crossbite, temporomandibular joint pain, and a tendency for root resorption. Two orthodontic miniplates with tubes were initially placed on both retromolar pads for distalization; 1 miniplate was relocated to the anterior region for angulation and vertical control

Histological features and management of a mandibular Gorham disease: a case report and review of maxillofacial cases in the literature.

Gorham disease (GD) is a rare osteolysis without sex, race, or age predilection, affecting bones in different regions. Based on clinical, histological, and molecular features, diagnosis is difficult and required exclusion of neoplastic, inflammatory, infectious, and endocrinologic disease. Etiology is still unknown. We report the case of a 36-year-old man suffering from severe progressive osteolysis located at the mandible. Histology showed massive osteolysis without malignant cells. Immunohistochemistry revealed thin-walled vessels and lymphatic ducts. These investigations lead to diagnosis o

Prevalence and severity of periodontal disease at mandibular molar teeth in smokers with regular oral hygiene habits.

BACKGROUND: Smoking appears to be detrimental to health because it has been associated with several diseases including cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Smoking also appears to be a major environmental factor associated with periodontal disease progression. The objective of this study was to evaluate the prevalence and severity of periodontal destruction as influenced by smoking in a Thai population. METHODS: Gingival health and periodontal conditions at mandibular molar furcation sites in 120 Thai dental patients (60 smokers and 60 never-smokers, age range 31 to 60 years) with generally hi

Endodontic disease of the mandibular first molar tooth secondary to caudal crossbite in a young Shetland sheepdog.

A six month-old intact female Shetland sheepdog was referred to the University of Illinois Veterinary Dental Clinic with a left-sided mandibular deviation and a thickened left ventral mandible in the region of the first molar tooth. On oral examination, left caudal crossbite was diagnosed. Dental radiographs revealed endodontic disease of the mandibular first molar tooth involved in the crossbite. Because of the difficulty of treating caudal crossbite and the potential of a pathological mandibular fracture, the endodontically affected tooth was extracted. Ten months following the extraction, m

Pyoderma Gangrenosum in Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Rare Case Involving Mandibular, Elbow, and Pubic Ulcers.

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare, inflammatory skin condition primarily characterized by painful ulcers with undermined borders, commonly occurring on the lower extremities. In approximately fifty percent of cases, PG is associated with underlying systemic diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), inflammatory arthritis, or myeloproliferative disorders. PG is notorious for its variable clinical manifestations, which can closely resemble other dermatological conditions, often leading to misdiagnosis and inappropriate treatment. This case underscores the importance of including PG

Localized mandibular enlargement in end-stage renal disease: two case reports and a review of the literature.

Enlargement of the jaws is an infrequently reported complication of chronic kidney disease mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). Two cases of localized mandibular swellings in young patients with histories of end-stage renal disease are discussed with a review of the literature. Although 17 of the first 19 cases that were reported exhibited diffuse enlargement, these reports increase the number of localized swellings to 8 and support the contention that localized expansion of the jaws as a manifestation of CKD-MBD is more common than originally recognized.
