Proper radiographic evaluation is essential to confirm the presence and location of a mandibular fracture. The panoramic view of the mandible is considered to be a very accurate technique and has been heavily relied on by many clinicians as the initial or sole means of diagnosing mandibular fractures. Three cases of mandibular fractures are presented in which a panoramic view failed to demonstrate fractures of the mandible that were obvious on plain film radiographs. Diagnosis and treatment planning should not be based on the information obtained from a single roentgenogram such as a panoramic

BACKGROUND: Assess the correlation between the position of the third molar (M3) and fractures of the mandibular angle and condyle using panoramic radiographs to offer valuable data references for oral clinical research.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study was undertaken, involving the collection of 409 cases of mandibular fracture in the Yanbian University Hospital. The case records and panoramic radiographs of mandibular angle fracture (78 cases) and condylar fracture (106 cases) were evaluated.
RESULTS: In the comparative analysis between the mandibular angle fractu

While uncommon, trauma-induced fractures to the neonatal mandible require unique consideration. A scoping review of neonatal mandibular fractures (NMF) was performed, in accordance with the PRISMA-ScR guidelines. The PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Scopus, and Web of Science databases were comprehensively searched, covering the period 1990 to March 2025. All studies that reported NMF (age <28 days) were considered eligible. Due to the nature of the studies found, only a descriptive analysis was performed. Seven articles reporting seven cases of NMF were included. Four cases were birth trauma

Sensory disturbances in the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) prior to treatment can be attributed to various factors, including the site, type of fracture, and fracture displacement. Therefore, it is of interest to assess the incidence of inferior alveolar nerve injuries associated with mandibular fractures before and after surgical treatment. Group A consisted of patients with inferior alveolar nerve paresthesia before treatment, while Group B consisted of patients with inferior alveolar nerve paresthesia after treatment. A significant difference was observed between the two groups, with a p-val

OBJECTIVE: To clarify the occurrence and causes of non-infection-related surgical wound dehiscence (SWD) in intraorally treated mandibular fractures.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients with one or two fractures of the dentate part of the mandible treated surgically via an intraoral approach were included in this retrospective study. The primary outcome variable was SWD. Associations between patient-, fracture- and surgery-related variables and SWD were evaluated.
RESULTS: Altogether 232 patients with 270 mandibular angle, body, symphysis and/or parasymphysis fractures were included in the analys

There is no accepted method of reporting mandibular fracture that reflects incidence, treatment and outcome for individual cases. As most series include anatomical site only for all fractures, the aim was to establish a new method to report fractures based on a systematic review of the literature and an internal audit. The classification proposed is: Class I; condyle, II; angle, IIc; II+condyle, III; body/symphysis, IIIc; III+condyle, IV; multiple fractures not including condyle, IVc; IV+condyle, V; bilateral condyle±other fracture(s). A total of 10,971 adult and 914 paediatric cases were anal

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to report four cases of mandibular fractures associated with endosteal implants and to discuss prevention and treatment of these types of fractures.
DISCUSSION: To evaluate whether the patient's anatomy allows insertion of implants, radiological exams that demonstrate the height and the labial-lingual width are needed. To reduce the potential fracture problem, the mandible can be restrengthened with bone grafting techniques. The treatment of a fracture in an atrophic mandible is always a challenge because of the diminished central blood supply, the depres

The lag screw is the simplest means of rigid internal fixation. By virtue of its ability to compress bone fragments without the use of a bone plate, it has wide application and achieves great stability. This article presents techniques to apply lag screws to fractures of the mandibular symphysis, the mandibular body, and the mandibular angle. Results are reviewed in studies of 315 patients whom the author has treated with lag screw fixation. The advantages of the lag screw technique over bone-plate fixation, such as a more rapid application, obviation of the need to adapt a bone plate, minimal

Seventy-three patients were admitted to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (Pa) between January 1979 and June 1989 with a diagnosis of mandibular fracture. Data were obtained through a retrospective review of these cases. The cases were divided into three age groups that reflected the developing structure of the mandible and the maturation of the dentition. A trend toward a greater number of fractures and a predominance of males is shown with increasing age. Child abuse is a relatively frequent cause of fractures throughout all groups. Associated injuries are more common in young children

A case of a mandibular fracture with an unusual complication is reported. A 13-year-old boy was admitted four years after conservative treatment of a symphyseal fracture. He complained of recurrent swelling. A radiographic evaluation showed a horizontally laid permanent mandibular left lateral incisor (PMLLI) that had probably slid into the fracture line and provoked repetitive infection episodes. After a surgery, a clinical and radiological analysis showed satisfactory healing.

PURPOSE: Achieving functional and anatomic restoration is remarkably difficult in patients with symphyseal mandibular fractures associated with bicondylar fractures. Our objective was to evaluate the functional and esthetic outcomes of a group of patients who underwent surgery using rigid fixation.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: In our study, 25 patients with symphyseal mandibular fractures associated with bicondylar fractures surgically treated from 1998 to 2008 at the Division of Maxillofacial Surgery of the University of Turin were retrospectively analyzed. The standardized evaluation consisted of

BACKGROUND/AIM: There are no data available to show whether there is a relationship between mandibular fractures and isolated fractures of the posterior and/or lateral walls of the maxillary sinus. The aim of this study was to determine whether there is a coincidence between these fracture patterns.
METHODS: Four hundred large volume cone beam computed tomography scans (CBCT) of patients with a fracture of the mandible between 2008 and 2013 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients with multiple midfacial fractures were excluded. The radiographic findings were correlated with epidemiological an

Airway compromise is life threatening complication in the maxillofacial fracture. However, the incident of the airway compromise following mandibular fracture was little known. Maxillofacial fractures during the past 3 years from 2017 to 2020 were investigated retrospectively. There were 154 patients with maxillofacial fractures were noted in the past 3 years. Mandibular fractures accounted for 93% of the maxillofacial fracture. The most common cause of injury was falls (75%), followed by sports (12%). Of these, 3 cases (1.9%) needed an airway management at the time of initial treatment, and a

The mandibular fracture takes the second position among facial bones fractures, with significant increase of cases in the last years. The aim of this paper is to report a clinical case of a patient with facial trauma due to an automotive accident, resulting in an atypical fracture in a unilateral mandibular angle. In the image examinations an atypical favorable fracture in the right mandibular angle region involving the apex of the erupted 48 tooth was found. The fracture line started in the posterior region of mandibular ramus, below mandibular condyle, and spread out until inferior border of

Mandibular fractures represent approximately two-thirds of all maxillofacial fractures (nearly 70%), out of which fractures of mandibular ramus represent 3.09% which is considered to be a rare fracture site. They occur alone or in combination with other facial bone fractures resulting in loss of function and disfigurement. The pattern of mandibular fractures varies with geographic location, physical activity, social, cultural, and environmental factors. The main causes of mandibular fracture are road traffic accidents, interpersonal violence, falls, sports injuries, industrial trauma, and path

We present 35 cases of mandibular fracture treated at the Suita Municipal Hospital between 1994 and 2002. Results showed a male predominance by 2 to 1 and the highest occurrence of trauma in the 20-29 year age group (31%). Major causes of fractures were traffic accidents (52%), assaults (31%), and falls (17%). The most common fracture sites were, in descending order, the condyle (33%), parasymphysis (25%), angle (22%), body (10%), and ramus (10%). The cause of fractures in patients less than 30 years old is most likely due to traffic accidents and assaults, while that in patients over 30 years

A total of 124 patients treated for mandibular fractures were analyzed. Patients were divided into three groups according to treatment: intermaxillary fixation, wire fixation and mini-plate fixation. For each method, the success of treatment was evaluated with respect to surgical approach, fracture site and injury to treatment interval. Five basic parameters were used for evaluation of the outcome: occlusion, appearance, mastication, duration of IMF and complications. The treatment was surveyed based on both the surgeon's and patient's-evaluation. All parameters were scored and average values
