A Rare Case of a Concurrent Mandibular Odontogenic Keratocyst and Oral Rhabdomyosarcoma in a Young Cat.

A 3-year-old neutered male domestic shorthair cat was presented with acute pain during feeding and with hypersalivation, without any history of trauma. Oral examination revealed a lateral deviation of the left mandible and a soft, painful swelling at the site of the missing left mandibular canine tooth (304). Intraoral radiographs and computed tomography (CT) demonstrated extensive bone lysis of the left mandible and a cystic lesion extending from the mandibular symphysis to the level of the mandibular fourth premolar tooth (308), within which the embedded canine tooth was located. Regional ly

Modifications of the midline mandibulotomy for access to the parapharyngeal space.

When considering a mandibular osteotomy for access to resect a parapharyngeal neoplasm, the following goals should be considered: preservation of the facial nerve, complete removal of the neoplasm without tumor rupture, maintenance of the preoperative teeth occlusion, acceptable temporomandibular joint function, functional preservation of the inferior alveolar nerve sensation, and satisfying aesthetic results. We propose a modified median osteotomy technique, which combines the advantages of sufficient exposition of the tumor with very good functional and aesthetic results. A case series of ni

Managing misdiagnosed gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) with occult symptoms: A report of two cases.

INTRODUCTION: importance: Gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC) is a rare neoplasm. GSCC has nonspecific features which commonly misdiagnosed with a simple toothache. CASE PRESENTATION: These are two cases; the first one describes a 62-year-old female who presented with pain in her right posterior mandibular teeth, and she was misdiagnosed with periodontal disease, but later histopathological tests confirmed gingival squamous cell carcinoma (GSCC). Consequently, the patient underwent surgery, and the gingival tumor was totally resected. Afterward, the patient was receiving chemotherapy, and

Oral squamous cell carcinoma in a pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina).

An adult, gravid, female pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) presented for facial swelling centered on the left mandible that was approximately 5 cm wide. Differential diagnoses included infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic origins. Definitive antemortem diagnosis was not possible, and the macaque's condition worsened despite supportive care. Necropsy findings included a mandibular mass that was locally invasive and expansile, encompassing approximately 80% of the left mandibular bone. The mass replaced portions of the soft palate, hard palate, sinuses, ear canal, and the caudal-rostral

Ameloblastic carcinoma in horses: case report and literature review.

Ameloblastic carcinoma is a malignant odontogenic neoplasm that has been reported only rarely in veterinary species. A 16-y-old Arabian crossbred mare was presented for evaluation of a hard mass on the body of the mandible, with evidence of osteolysis on radiographs. Incisional biopsies revealed an invasive neoplasm comprised of spindloid epithelial cells with a high mitotic count and partial dual cytokeratin-vimentin immunoreactivity. The horse was euthanized because of rapid tumor progression 3 mo after presentation. Postmortem evaluation revealed partial obliteration of the mandible by a la

Ameloblastoma of the mandible with intracranial metastasis. A case study.

Ameloblastoma is an aggressive locally recurring neoplasm of odontogenic epithelium. We describe a case of a mandibular ameloblastoma with a 17-year history of local recurrences followed by two metachronous intracranial metastases. Central nervous system metastasis without pulmonary involvement is previously unreported in a living patient with ameloblastoma. The behavior of this tumor qualifies it as a malignant ameloblastoma.

Ossifying fibroma of the mandible with primary hyperparathyroidism due to non-familial parathyroid adenoma.

Ossifying fibroma is an uncommon benign osteogenic neoplasm arising from cells of the periodontal ligament, typically with a slowly progressive enlargement of the affected bone. The neoplasm sometimes presents with hyperparathyroidism, most of which cases are due to familial parathyroid tumours. We report a rare case of ossifying fibroma of the mandible which showed very rapid growth and presented with primary hyperparathyroidism due to non-familial parathyroid adenoma. Despite improvement of parathyroid dysfunction after removal of the parathyroid adenoma, the tumour continued to grow very ag

Parotidectomy-related facial nerve lesions: proposal for a modified Sunnybrook Facial Grading System.

OBJECTIVE: Facial nerve injury, affecting mainly the marginal mandibular branch, is the most frequent neurologic complication from parotidectomy. To test a modified Sunnybrook Facial Grading System as a new tool to assess the facial nerve function following parotidectomy, emphasizing the marginal mandibular branch. METHODS: We reviewed the medical records of 73 post-parotidectomy patients (40 female, 18-84 years old, mean age 53.2 years) with facial nerve sparing, referred to the Department of Physical Therapy. All patients had parotid neoplasms or advanced skin cancer, and were followed by t

Pedunculated soft-tissue mass on the alveolar gingiva.

A case of peripheral ameloblastoma, a rare intraoral neoplasm, has been presented. The lesion appears most commonly as a mass on the mandibular lingual gingiva of patients in their fifth and sixth decades of life. The peripheral ameloblastoma does not share the aggressive nature of the intraosseous variant. The lesion has been overtreated in the past and warrants only a local supraperiosteal excision.

Ameloblastic carcinoma of the mandible.

BACKGROUND: Ameloblastic carcinoma is a rare, aggressive odontogenic neoplasm of the jaws in which the epithelial cells exhibit cytologic features of recognizable ameloblastoma and malignancy. Cases with metastasis have been infrequently reported. METHODS: A case of a 64-year-old white woman with mandibular ameloblastic carcinoma with documented distant metastasis is presented. The patient's presenting symptoms included facial asymmetry of the right jaw over 2 months and the development of moderate trismus. Clinical manifestations, pathology, treatment, and biologic behavior are discussed. Th

The vascularized medial femoral condyle osteochondral flap for temporomandibular joint reconstruction: A study of medium-term outcomes.

Defects of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) severely compromise mandibular function and facial contour, rendering its reconstruction one of the most challenges in maxillofacial surgery. This study introduced a novel technique for TMJ reconstruction employing vascularized medial femoral condyle (MFC) osteochondral flap and aimed to evaluate its medium-term functional outcomes and stability. This observational study included 15 patients who received vascularized MFC osteochondral flap reconstruction for TMJ ankylosis or neoplasms. The follow-up ranged from 12 to 69 months (median:24 months). Th

Mandibular reconstruction with different techniques.

Traumas, malformative or dysplastic pathologies, atrophy, osteoradionecrosis, and benign or malignant neoplasm can cause bone deficits in the mandible. Consequent mandibular defects can determine aesthetic and functional problems; therefore, being able to perform a good reconstruction is of critical importance.Several techniques have been proposed for mandibular reconstruction over the years. In this article, we present and discuss the evolution during the time of the methods of mandible reconstruction as well as pros and cons of each procedure on the basis of experience of 10 years in the max

Intraosseous mandibular schwannoma mimicking an odontogenic keratocyst, with a postsurgical pathological fracture.

OBJECTIVE: Schwannomas are slowly growing tumours derived from Schwann cells. We present a clinical case of schwannoma in the mandibular angle. METHOD: Case report and a review of the world literature concerning intraosseous schwannoma of the maxillofacial region. RESULTS: Schwannomas or neurilemmomas are slow-growing, benign neoplasms derived from Schwann cells. Intraoral lesions are unusual and intraosseous schwannomas are even rarer, representing less than 1 per cent of benign primary tumours of the bones. We present a clinical case of schwannoma in the mandibular angle mimicking a kerato

Patient's Customized Prosthesis would be a Better Alternative Choice than Macro-plate as a Reconstruction Method in Resected Mandible: A Case Report.

Ameloblastoma, a benign but locally aggressive neoplasm, frequently requires substantial surgical resection to avert recurrence, potentially leading to considerable mandibular abnormalities. This case report examines a 31-year-old female patient diagnosed with a multilocular ameloblastoma, originally treated with marginal excision and subsequent reconstruction utilizing a conventional plate. The patient was admitted to Velayat Hospital in Mashhad, Iran, in 2024 and received the necessary medical treatment there. Complications, including as plate exposure and jaw deviation, arose a year later,

Central giant cell granuloma of the mandibular condyle: a case report and review of the literature.

Central giant cell granuloma (CGCG) is a benign intraosseous lesion. The true nature of this lesion is controversial and remains unknown; the three competing theories are that it could be a reactive lesion, a developmental anomaly or a benign neoplasm. Furthermore, the actual aetiology of CGCG is still unclear, although inflammation, haemorrhage and local trauma have all been suggested; it has also been hypothesized that CGCG may have a genetic aetiology. Lesions central to the mandibular condylar head are very rare, with only three documented cases in the English language literature, none of
