A novel simulation enhanced education for osteopathic manipulation of hospitalized patients.

CONTEXT: Simulation-based medical education (SBME) is a method for enhancing learner skill prior to initiating care for real patients. Although the use of SBME continues to grow, there is limited data on simulations related to osteopathic medical training. Osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM) applies hands-on techniques to facilitate healing. We hypothesized that the use of SBME to closely mimic OMM provided to the hospitalized patient would help to increase individual knowledge and comfort with OMM techniques and increase the likelihood of a learner utilizing OMM techniques on patients. Osteopathic manipulation and its applicability in the emergency department: A narrative review.

BACKGROUND: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT), also known as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM), is a set of manual techniques, developed by Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, founder of osteopathic medicine, initially limited to osteopathic medicine, for the treatment of painful conditions. This toolset is now used by allopathic physicians, international osteopaths, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other healthcare workers for the treatment of musculoskeletal pain. OMT can be used in the emergency department (ED) for the treatment of musculoskeletal complaints as an adjunct to pharma

The Benefits of Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment on a Patient With Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome.

Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (EDS) is a disorder affecting connective tissue throughout the body. Inherited through several different genetic mutations, the EDS symptoms of hyperextensibility, hypermobility, and fragility cause significant somatic and visceral issues in those affected. Chronic somatic dysfunction, pain, and systemic involvement create lifelong comorbidities and discomfort for these patients. One in every 5,000 individuals is burdened with EDS worldwide; in the US, the range has been reported to be 1/2,500-1/5,000 people. Very few patients with EDS in the literature have been documen

Preliminary Evaluation of an Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment to Prevent Motion Sickness.

INTRODUCTION: Motion sickness affecting military pilots and aircrew can impact flight safety and, if severe, can lead to disqualification from flight status. However, due to the common adverse effects of motion sickness pharmaceuticals (e.g., drowsiness), medication options are severely limited. The purpose of this study was to explore the potential utility of a nonpharmaceutical method for motion sickness prevention, specifically an osteopathic manipulative technique (OMT).METHODS:A novel OMT protocol for the reduction of motion sickness symptoms and severity was evaluated using a sham-contro

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment of Herpes Zoster Ophthalmicus/Postherpetic Neuralgia.

Herpes zoster (HZ) and herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO) are the result of reactivation of varicella-zoster virus (VZV) from a dormant condition. Although HZ symptoms typically subside after a few weeks, HZO and postherpetic neuralgia (PHN) can persist at least 90 days after the appearance of the HZ rash. Presently, there is no gold standard for a disease-modifying therapy for postherpetic neuralgia and the current treatment is focused on early intervention and management of symptoms and dermatological complications. In the present case, a 74-year-old Caucasian male initially developed severe r

Treating Bell's Palsy With Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine: A Case Report.

Bell's palsy (BP) occurs when the facial nerve (CN VII) is swollen, inflamed, or compressed, resulting in facial weakness or paralysis; etiology is unknown. BP patients often succumb to a decreased quality of life due to the inability to make facial expressions, increased sensitivity to auditory stimuli, and dysregulation in tear and saliva production. Despite conventional examination and therapy options, the syndrome is majorly regarded as idiopathic and left unresolved for many patients. In this case of a patient with BP, treatment with osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) which focused

A Short Review of the Treatment of Headaches Using Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review highlights the importance of osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) in headache sufferers. OMT is a viable option for patients who either do not wish to use pharmaceuticals or who have contraindications to pharmaceuticals. Patients with headaches that are refractory to other treatment options may also be candidates for OMT. Multiple headache etiologies are amenable to this non-invasive treatment option and they will be reviewed here. Although there are advantages to using this treatment method, there are also shortcomings in the literature, which will be discus

Osteopathic manipulative medicine in the treatment of hypertension: an alternative, conventional approach.

The branch of medicine known as osteopathy was founded by Andrew Taylor Still in the mid to late 19th century. Osteopathy is a philosophy of medicine. Osteopathic physicians use techniques collectively referred to as osteopathic manipulative medicine (OMM). One of the most common diseases suffered by those residing in westernized nations is hypertension. Although osteopathic physicians are taught to incorporate OMM into the management of medical disorders, the usefulness of OMM in treating hypertension is less clear. This review reflects on the past 90 years of biomedical literature and attemp

Osteopathic manipulative treatment for allopathic physicians: piloting a longitudinal curriculum.

CONTEXT: Under the Accreditation for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) single accreditation system, there is likely to be increasing interest and opportunity for teaching osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) to allopathic residents and residency faculty. When learning OMT, allopathic physicians (MDs) have distinct needs compared with osteopathic medical students. For example, MDs already have a foundation in anatomy and medical vocabulary, but incorporating an osteopathic approach to patient care may require a paradigm shift. Thus, a unique approach to osteopathic education for MDs in res
