Treatment of gout in a recently published 9th century manuscript of Rhazes.

Gout is a common lifestyle disease and was identified by Hippocrates in the fifth century BC although the condition was known ancient Egypt some two millennia earlier. The pharmaceutical suggestions described in a recently edited manuscript, the oldest known medical manuscript of the Arab world, is presented, here for the first time. It is entitled Treatise on Gout by Rhazes, the greatest of Arab clinicians, and was written in the late 9th or early 10th century. Rhazes' pharmaceutics are presented in descriptive tables and their components are also compared with other recipes from manuscripts

The first cosmetic treatise of history. A female point of view.

The Schola Medica Salernitana was an early medieval medical school in the south Italian city of Salerno and the most important native source of medical knowledge in Europe at the time. The school achieved its splendour between the 10th and 13th centuries, during the final decades of Longobard kingdom. In the school, women were involved as both teachers and students for medical learning. Among these women, there was Trotula de Ruggiero (11th century), a teacher whose main interest was to alleviate suffering of women. She was the author of many medical works, the most notable being De Passionibu

[The plague regimen of Arent Schryver].

This article is concerned with the edition of a 15th century plague treatise in Middle Dutch, by Arent Schryver, licentiate in medicine, from Dalen (Drenthe, the Netherlands), that has been discovered recently. The text has been found in manuscript number 33 of the Fürstliche Salm-Salmsche Bibliothek in Anholt (FRG). It is the most detailed plague treatise in Middle Dutch known to date. Its structure and contents are clearly based upon the Compendium de epidimia of the Medical Faculty of Paris, but on numerous occasions it diverges from its model. Therefore it deserves its own place among the

[Hippocrates. Aphorisms and Epidemics III. Two clinical texts].

The two Hippocratic texts, Aphorisms and Epidemics III, have not been translated into Danish previously. The Aphorisms are 412 short, pithy statements, mostly on the prognosis in relation to certain symptoms in the course of the diseases, very often febrile. The Aphorisms begin with the famous words: "Life is short, the Art long, opportunity fleeting, experiment treacherous, judgment difficult." (Transl. W H S Jones [22]). Epidemics III consists of 28 case histories, again mostly of febrile patients, but also of observations on the connection of the seasons with general morbidity and mortality

Neuroactive steroids: an update of their roles in central and peripheral nervous system.

After five editions, the congress on "Steroids and Nervous System" held in Torino, Italy, represents an important international event for researchers involved in this field aimed to recapitulate mechanisms, physiological and pharmacological effects of neuroactive steroids. The present review introduces manuscripts collected in this supplement issue which are based on new interesting findings such as the influence of sex steroids on cannabinoid-regulated biology, the role of steroids in pain, the importance of co-regulators in steroidal mechanisms and the understanding of new non classical mech

[Rufus of Ephesus, On gout].

Aims. For a study on the timeline of gout from the Corpus Hippocraticum to the Renaissance, encompassing some 26 authors, we have focussed on a Latin manuscript - "De podagra" - of the Middle Ages (posthumous edition dated to the 7th-8th century AD) of Rufus of Ephesus (98-117 AD), during the reign of Trajan. A multipurpose study has been devised to 1) translate into English and Italian the Medieval Latin treatise of the 7th-8th century AD of Rufus of Ephesus on "De podagra"; 2) define the role of Rufus in the historical timeline of gout from the Corpus Hippocraticum to the Renaissance ; 3) an

[The Tractatus de austuribus and its adoption by Albertus Magnus].

Probably in the 60s of the 13th century Albert the Great (dagger 1280) terminated his De animalibus libri XXVI, mainly a commentary on Aristotle's Animals but a milestone in medieval zoology. In the extensive chapter De falconibus of the 23rd book, which was written around 1250 and is probably the oldest part of the whole treatise, Albert used medieval tracts on birds of prey as source material. In the article one of these tracts, the anonymous Tractatus de austuribus on the healing of hawks, is analysed and for the first time presented in a critical synoptic edition (after the Codex unicus Be

Recognition of pigment layers in illuminated manuscripts by means of Kalpha/Kbeta and Lalpha/Lbeta ratios of characteristic X-rays.

X-ray fluorescence analysis with an evaluation of the Kalpha/Kbeta or Lalpha/Lbeta count rate ratios enables a layered structure to be recognized, because the measured ratio of two lines of one element depends on the depth distribution of this element in the analyzed objects. Several specimens consisting of layers of various pigments were analyzed to demonstrate the possibilities of the proposed technique. Then the Lalpha/Lbeta technique was applied in an investigation of cinnabar distribution in mediaeval manuscripts.

A meta-analysis comparing the toxicity of sediments in the laboratory and in situ.

Sediment toxicity tests in the laboratory are an important part of ecological risk assessments, yet how they relate to sediment toxicity in situ has rarely been explored. Using meta-analysis, we examined differences in the toxicity of sediment tested in the laboratory and in situ. Data from four published studies were subjected to rigorous statistical analyses. Overall, the toxicity of sediments in laboratory tests was substantially less than their toxicity in situ. Differences between laboratory and in situ toxicity, expressed using the log odds ratio effect size, varied significantly among p

How to marry a disease: epidemics, contagion, and a magic ritual against the 'hand of the ghost'.

To test whether the Babylonians had a 'rational' explanation of contagion, some letters from Mari mentioning epidemics and contagious diseases are studied within the wider context of Babylonian medicine. Descriptions of similar cases are adduced from other cuneiform sources. In particular, one later magical text from Boğazköy with instructions to marry a doll to an illness demon shows striking similarities with the terminology of the Mari letters. This points toward a magico-religious concept of contagiousness in which disease can be transmitted intentionally, or accidentally leap from one ind

[Thomas Montanus, author of the plague treatise, Qualitas loimodea sive pestis Brugana: some biographical data].

Thomas Montanus (1617-1685), physician of the City of Bruges, is the author of a voluminous treatise on plague, published in 1669, and written after an epidemic of plague in Bruges in 1666. A translation in Dutch of the treatise will be published shortly. In this contribution some biographical data on Montanus are presented: his descendence, his education, his career and his professional experience with plague. On the other hand the structure of the plague treatise Qualitas loimodea sive pestis Brugana is briefly mentioned.

Galen's Anxious Patients: Lypē as Anxiety Disorder.

Galen describes a syndrome he associates with an emotion called lypē, with specific symptoms and a course that may lead to humoral imbalance, disease, and death. Lypē is an emotion that encompasses distress at a loss, as the death of a close friend or the destruction of one's books by fire; but Galen also associates it with chronic worry about a future threat, and a physiology between the emotions of worry and fear (that is, 'anxiety'). Lypē can cause a progressive syndrome characterised by insomnia, fever, pallor, and weight loss that can kill patients or degenerate into psychotic illness. Th

[Maurice Raynaud (1834-1881) and the syndrome named after him].

Approximately 150 years ago Maurice Raynaud described in his doctoral thesis a set of symptoms characterized by intermittent pallor and cyanosis of the extremities which in severe cases could lead to the development of gangrene. Because the symptoms could be triggered by spasms in small blood vessels the exclusion of an organic vascular disease is a prerequisite of the diagnosis. Raynaud had not yet recognized that this often observed syndrome could sometimes be advance or initial symptoms of a severe general disease. This is the reason why nowadays these are referred to as primary and seconda
