Trends of Youth Marijuana Treatment Admissions: Increasing Admissions Contrasted with Decreasing Drug Involvement.

BACKGROUND: Recent changes in marijuana policies and their potential negative effects on youth development are a public health concern. Identifying the most appropriate treatment approaches for problematic marijuana use is important. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to track marijuana use among young people by examining national changes from 1995 to 2012 in the demographics, referral sources, and the substance use patterns related to youth admissions to substance abuse treatment programs. METHODS: We examined first-time substance abuse treatment admissions among youth, utilizing the Tre

Let's Be Blunt: Consumption Methods Matter Among Black Marijuana Smokers.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the high prevalence of blunt (i.e., hollowed-out cigars that are filled with marijuana) use among Black marijuana smokers, few studies have examined if and how blunt users differ from traditional joint users. METHOD: The current study compared the prevalence and patterns of use for those who smoked blunts in the past month (i.e., blunt users) with those who used marijuana through other methods (i.e., other marijuana users). The sample included 935 Black past-month marijuana smokers participating in the 2013 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. RESULTS: Among past-month

Patterns and correlates of substance use among young adult African American women.

Patterns and correlates of substance use among urban African American young women (ages 18-19, n = 459) were examined. Four patterns were identified: no/infrequent alcohol and marijuana use (64.9%); recent alcohol only use (18.2%); recent marijuana only use (7.9%); and recent alcohol and marijuana use (9.0%). Having a recent male sexual partner and a history of sexual coercion were associated with increased odds of marijuana-only and dual use. Greater family support and childhood sexual abuse were associated with increased odds of alcohol-only use. Results suggest that sexual relationships and

Antibody-catalyzed oxidation of delta(9)-tetrahydrocannabinol.

Marijuana abuse continues to plague society and the lack of effective treatments warrants concern. Catalytic antibodies capable of oxidatively degrading the major psychoactive component of marijuana, Delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (Delta9-THC), are presented. The antibodies generate reactive oxygen species from singlet oxygen (1O2*), using riboflavin (vitamin B2) and visible light as the 1O2* source. Cannabitriol was identified as the major degradation product of this reaction, demonstrating the ability of an antibody to catalyze a complex chemical transformation with therapeutic implications for

Marijuana: respiratory tract effects.

Marijuana is the most commonly used drug of abuse in the USA. It is commonly abused through inhalation and therefore has effects on the lung that are similar to tobacco smoke, including increased cough, sputum production, hyperinflation, and upper lobe emphysematous changes. However, at this time, it does not appear that marijuana smoke contributes to the development of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Marijuana can have multiple physiologic effects such as tachycardia, peripheral vasodilatation, behavioral and emotional changes, and possible prolonged cognitive impairment. The carcinoge

Predictors of marijuana treatment outcomes: the role of self-efficacy.

This study tested the ability of sets of demographic, socioeconomic, marijuana use/abuse, psychological distress, and self-efficacy variables to predict posttreatment indices of marijuana intake and problems related to use. Subjects were 167 adults who participated in one of two outpatient treatments for marijuana dependence and completed the 3-, 6-, and 12-month posttreatment follow-ups. Only pretreatment marijuana quantity-frequency of intake and self-efficacy variables made significant and consistent contributions to the regression equations predicting posttreatment frequency of use. The impact of childhood maltreatment on young adults' substance abuse.

Designed to establish a causal relationship between childhood victimization and young adults' substance abuse, this study also examined depression's role as mediator in that causal relationship. The study employs child-abuse measures that weigh both the type (sexual, physical) and the persistence of abuse. The study took as its substance-abuse measures the DSM-IV criteria for current alcohol abuse, current marijuana abuse, and current drug abuse. Data from the first 5 waves of the National Youth Survey (NYS) was employed, along with data from its 7th wave, to establish the temporal order neede

Marijuana use in potential liver transplant candidates.

Concern exists that liver transplant center substance abuse policies may have an inappropriate and disproportionate impact on marijuana users. Our hypothesis is that patients with chronic liver disease who were marijuana users will have inferior survival. This is a retrospective (1999-2007) cohort study. The primary outcome measure is time-dependent, adjusted patient survival from the time of liver transplant evaluation. The primary exposure variable is a positive cannabinoid toxicology screen during the liver transplant evaluation period. Overall, 155 patients qualified as marijuana users whi

The Impact of Abuse Trauma on Alcohol and Drug Use: A Study of High-Risk Incarcerated Girls.

This study examines the impact of abuse trauma (physical and sexual) on alcohol and drug use of high-risk girls (12-18 years of age) who were surveyed within the first two weeks of their incarceration. One-way ANOVA analyses and Tukey post-hoc tests indicate physical abuse with a weapon was associated with higher marijuana use and number of drugs used. Sexual abuse, especially within the past year increased marijuana use, alcohol use, number of drugs used, and alcohol and other drug (AOD) problems. Policy implications reflect the need for treatment protocols within substance abuse programs to

Childhood abuse related to nicotine, illicit and prescription drug use by women: pilot study.

A sample of 811 women ages 18 to 59 (M=26.0, SD=6.5) responded to an advertisement by telephone. Inquiries were made about childhood abuse status and adult use of alcohol, nicotine, and prescription and illicit drugs. Significant associations were noted for reported sexual, physical, and emotional childhood abuse with use of nicotine, marijuana, and antidepressants in adulthood. Reported childhood physical and emotional abuses were also significantly associated with use of cocaine and anxiolytics, and sexual abuse with antipsychotic use in adulthood. Only childhood emotional abuse was associat

An acute post-rape intervention to prevent substance use and abuse.

The trauma of rape is routinely associated with extreme acute distress. Such peri-event anxiety increases risk of developing psychopathology and substance use or abuse post-rape, with the degree of initial distress positively predicting future problems. Unfortunately, the nature of post-rape forensic evidence collection procedures may exacerbate initial distress, thereby potentiating post-rape negative emotional sequelae. Consequently, substance use may increase in an effort to ameliorate this distress. To address this, a two-part video intervention was developed for use in acute post-rape tim

Bilateral Optic Neuropathy Associated with Acute Inhaled Marijuana Use: Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Marijuana is the most commonly used federally illegal drug in the United States. Acute marijuana use is associated with several cardiovascular and neuropsychological adverse effects. Ocular complications of marijuana abuse are very rare. Herein, we present the first report of bilateral optic neuropathy following smoking marijuana. A 28-year-old man presented to the emergency room with sudden onset of bilateral blurring of the inferior visual field 8 h after smoking marijuana. His best-corrected visual acuity was 20/30 in the right eye and 20/20 in the left eye. Fundus examination revealed blur

Perceived safety and controllability of events: Markers of risk for marijuana use in young adults?

Drawing on constructs from the trauma literature, the current study evaluated perceptions of safety and controllability of events as potential markers of risk for marijuana use. In addition, we characterized these perceptions in relation to individual level substance abuse risk factors (marijuana expectancies, impulsivity, depression, and anxiety), gender, and race. Data were collected via web survey from college students at two northeastern universities (n=228, 82.0% female). Controllability of events (CE) was rated significantly higher by Blacks than Whites. Safety/vulnerability (SV) and CE

Setting and counselor type as related to program retention.

Study was made of the relationship between successful treatment outcome and staff:client ratios in two types of treatment settings. Successful treatment was defined as retention in treatment for at least 6 months and program completion. Using a total sample of 5,405 discharged clients, it was found that there were no differences in outcome between community mental health centers and dedicated drug abuse treatment programs for clients whose primary drug of abuse was either an opiate or a nonopiate exclusive of marijuana. Community mental health centers were significantly more likely to retain m

Atrial fibrillation following synthetic cannabinoid abuse.

Marijuana and its synthetic forms, called synthetic cannabinoids (SCs), are used as recreational drugs. Bonzai is a kind of SC. Adverse cardiovascular events have been reported with abuse of marijuana and SCs, including arrhythmia, myocardial infarction, and sudden cardiac death. Presently described is a case of a 23-year-old, previously healthy man, who was admitted to the emergency department with atrial fibrillation after Bonzai abuse. Sinus rhythm was restored during observation.

Marijuana-associated ST-elevation myocardial infarction: is this a benign drug.

Marijuana is the most commonly used psychoactive drug in the USA. A 35-year-old man with a medical history of marijuana abuse is admitted to the hospital due to crushing substernal chest pain. ECG shows evolving ST-segment elevation with a rise in cardiac enzymes, consistent with ST-elevation myocardial infarction. A urine toxicology screen is positive for cannabis and negative for cocaine and other stimulant drugs. An emergent cardiac catheterisation reveals no evidence of coronary artery disease or thrombosis. A diagnosis of coronary vasospasm is strongly considered, and the patient is start

Triggering acute pancreatitis complicated with acute myocardial infarction by marijuana: a rare case report.

Marijuana is a widely used illicit substance among young adults and its abuse has been reported worldwide. Marijuana is a rare trigger of acute myocardial infarction and acute pancreatitis. We present a 25-year-old man with acute pancreatitis subsequently complicated by acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), which was associated with marijuana abuse. This case highlights the need and importance of awareness among public about this rare but potentially lethal adverse effect. Also, it draws attention when clinicians confront patients with history of substance abuse, they should be ale

Reward-related brain response and craving correlates of marijuana cue exposure: a preliminary study in treatment-seeking marijuana-dependent subjects.

OBJECTIVE: : Determining the brain substrates underlying the motivation to abuse addictive drugs is critical for understanding and treating addictive disorders. Laboratory neuroimaging studies have demonstrated differential activation of limbic and motivational circuitry (eg, amygdala, hippocampus, ventral striatum, insula, and orbitofrontal cortex) triggered by cocaine, heroin, nicotine, and alcohol cues. The literature on neural responses to marijuana cues is sparse. Thus, the goals of this study were to characterize the brain's response to marijuana cues, a major motivator underlying drug u
