Adverse birth outcomes in relation to maternal marital and cohabitation status in Canada.

PURPOSE: An increasing percentage of children are born to couples who cohabit but are not legally married. Using data from a nationally representative Canadian sample, we estimated associations of maternal marital and cohabitation status with stillbirth, infant mortality, preterm birth (PTB), and small- and large-for-gestational-age (SGA and LGA) birth. METHODS: The 2006 Canadian Birth-Census Cohort was created by linking birth registration data with the 2006 long-form census. We used log-binomial regression to estimate risk ratios (RRs) for adverse birth outcomes associated with being single

Marital Status, Cardiovascular Diseases, and Cardiovascular Risk Factors: A Review of the Evidence.

BACKGROUND: There is evidence showing that marital status (MS) and marital disruption (i.e., separation, divorce, and being widowed) are associated with poor physical health outcomes, including for all-cause mortality. We checked for the available evidence on the association between MS and cardiovascular (CV) diseases, outcomes, and CV risk factors. METHODS: A search across the PubMed database of all articles, including the term "marital status" in their title, was performed. All articles were then manually checked for the presence of the following terms or topic: CV diseases, acute myocardia

Marital status, quality of life, and clinical outcome in patients with heart failure.

AIM: This study investigated the impact of having a partner on quality of life (QoL), the number of hospital readmissions, and 9-month survival in patients with heart failure (HF). METHODS: The study population consisted of hospitalized patients with HF. QoL was measured by the Cantril Ladder of Life (0-10) during hospital admission. Clinical data, readmission rate, and number of deaths were registered by patient interview and chart review. RESULTS: Of the 179 patients, 96 (54%) were married or were living with a partner. Differences in QoL between married patients and those living alone wer

Marital status and post-radical prostatectomy outcomes: results from the SEARCH database.

PURPOSE: Social support, specifically marital status, has been shown as a significant prognostic factor for survival of multiple malignancies, including prostate cancer. However, this has not been investigated in an equal access Veterans Affairs (VA) cohort where other support systems exist that may minimize the potential benefit of social support from a partner. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed data from 9,931 patients undergoing primary radical prostatectomy (RP) in the VA from 1988-2020 across 9 VA centers. Univariable and multivariable Cox proportional hazards models were used to test

The impact of marital status on health care utilization among Medicare beneficiaries.

To explain prior literature showing that married Medicare beneficiaries achieve better health outcomes at half the per person cost of single beneficiaries, we examined different patterns of healthcare utilization as a potential driver.Using the Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey (MCBS) data, we sought to understand utilization patterns in married versus currently-not-married Medicare beneficiaries. We analyzed the relationship between marital status and healthcare utilization (classified based on setting of care utilization into outpatient, inpatient, and skilled nursing facility (SNF) use) u

Breastfeeding Initiation in Mothers with Repeat Cesarean Section: The Impact of Marital Status.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 90% of mothers with a primary C-section have a subsequent C-section. To date, research has demonstrated that primary C-sections are associated with breastfeeding noninitiation. However, it is unknown if this association persists after the primary C-section. Furthermore, literature has shown a differing relationship between breastfeeding initiations by marital status. Due to the high proportion of women who give birth while unmarried, investigating differences by marital status will add a significant contribution to breastfeeding literature. This study investigates the

Marital status, living arrangement and mortality: does the association vary by gender?

BACKGROUND: Men appear to benefit more from being married than women with respect to mortality in middle age. However, there is some uncertainty about gender differences in mortality risks in older individuals, widowed, divorced and single individuals and about the impact of living arrangements. METHODS: Longitudinal data with 1990 census records being linked to mortality data up to 2005 were used (Swiss National Cohort). The sample comprised all residents over age 44 years in Switzerland (n=2,440,242). All-cause mortality HRs for marital status and living arrangements were estimated by Cox r

Union status, marital history and female contraceptive sterilization in the United States.

CONTEXT: Much of what is known about the choice of sterilization as a contraceptive method is based on data from married women or couples. Because of increasing rates of cohabitation, divorce and repartnering, however, the relationship context in which sterilization decisions are made has changed. METHODS: The 1995 National Survey of Family Growth includes the complete birth and union histories of 10,277 white, black and Hispanic women. The distribution of union status and marital history at the time of tubal sterilization was estimated for these three racial and ethnic groups among the 799 w

Determinants of marital decision despite sickle cell status awareness: a mixed method study.

INTRODUCTION: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a significant public health concern in Nigeria. Despite widespread awareness campaigns advocating for premarital phenotype testing, many couples still make marital decisions that increase the risk of having children with SCD. This study aims to explore the factors influencing marital decisions among parents of children with SCD, focusing on the relationship between phenotype awareness and marital choices. METHOD: This mixed-method study was conducted among 209 parents of children with SCD receiving care at the paediatric haematology clinics of Univer

Marital Status and Sex-Based Differences in Outcomes After Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation.

Studies have shown improved outcomes among married patients who underwent cardiovascular surgery; however, this has not been well studied in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVi). We examined the impact of marital status and patient sex on outcomes after TAVi. Patients who underwent TAVi from January 2015 to June 2018 were reviewed and stratified into 3 groups: single, married, and widowed. The impact of marital status and sex on 30-day outcomes was assessed using a stepwise logistic regression analysis. Cumulative survival was estimated using Kaplan-Meier analysis and adjusted surviv
