Physiological and biomechanical considerations for a human Mars mission.

Evolving on Earth has made humans perfectly adapted, both physiologically and biomechanically, to its gravity and atmospheric conditions. Leaving the Earth and its protective environment, therefore, results in the degradation of a number of human systems. Long-duration stays on the International Space Station (ISS) are accompanied by significant effects on crew's cardiovascular, vestibular and musculoskeletal systems. Bone loss and muscle atrophy are experienced at a rate of 1-3% and 5% per month respectively, while VO2 (oxygen consumption) measurements are reduced by approximately 25% after a

Behavior of carbon dioxide and other volatiles on Mars.

We have found that a rather simple thermal model of the Martian surface, in combination with current observations of the atmospheric composition, points strongly toward the conclusion that the polar caps of Mars consist almost entirely of frozen CO(2). This study was based upon the following principal assumptions. 1) Carbon dioxide is a major constituent of the Martian atmosphere. 2) The blanketing effect of the atmosphere is small, and due principally to the absorption band of CO(2) near 15 microns. 3) Lateral and convective heat transfer by the atmosphere is negligible. 4) The far-infrared e

Detection of triboelectric discharges during dust events on Mars.

Lightning is among the most energetic manifestation of electrical activity in planetary atmospheres, with documented observations not only on Earth but also on Saturn and Jupiter1. On Mars, the existence of electrical activity has long been suspected2,3 but never directly demonstrated. The dusty atmosphere of Mars undergoes aeolian processes, ranging from wind-blown dust and sand, metre-to-hundred-metre-sized dust devils to thousand-kilometre-scale dust storms4, which, in Earth's deserts, can become electrified through triboelectric charging5-7. For this reason, electric fields have been predi

Stable carbon isotope evolution of formaldehyde on early Mars.

Organic matter in the Martian sediments may provide a key to understanding the prebiotic chemistry and habitability of early Mars. The Curiosity rover has measured highly variable and 13C-depleted carbon isotopic values in early Martian organic matter whose origin is uncertain. One hypothesis suggests the deposition of simple organic molecules generated from 13C-depleted CO derived from CO2 photochemical reduction in the atmosphere. Here, we present a coupled photochemistry-climate evolution model incorporating carbon isotope fractionation processes induced by CO2 photolysis, carbon escape, an

Time-Sensitive Aspects of Mars Sample Return (MSR) Science.

Samples returned from Mars would be placed under quarantine at a Sample Receiving Facility (SRF) until they are considered safe to release to other laboratories for further study. The process of determining whether samples are safe for release, which may involve detailed analysis and/or sterilization, is expected to take several months. However, the process of breaking the sample tube seal and extracting the headspace gas will perturb local equilibrium conditions between gas and rock and set in motion irreversible processes that proceed as a function of time. Unless these time-sensitive proces

Discussing STIs: doctors are from Mars, patients from Venus.

BACKGROUND: Primary care plays an important role in promoting sexual health, but in this setting counselling regarding sexually transmitted infections (STIs) is rarely performed and often inadequate. OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to identify and quantify the barriers physicians encounter in discussing STIs with their patients. METHODS: A postal questionnaire-based survey was carried out in a random sample of 200 primary care physicians in Antwerp, Belgium. RESULTS: The response rate was 68%. Among the 122 respondents, only 44.3% provide some form of counselling (asking about sexual history, inform

Chemical studies on the possible existence of life on Mars.

Although there is no direct evidence yet for the existence of life on Mars, it is reasonable to conclude that the emergence of life on Earth, which appears to have been controlled by universal laws of physics and chemistry, may have been repeated elsewhere in the universe. The dual approach of synthesis and analysis in our experimental studies has provided ample evidence in support of this hypothesis.

Bio-markers and the search for extinct life on Mars.

Geologic and climatologic studies suggest that conditions on early Mars were similar to early Earth. Because life on Earth is believed to have originated during this early period (3.5 billion years ago), the Martian environment could have also been conducive to the origin of life. To investigate this possibility we must first define the attributes of an early Martian biota. Then, specific geographic locations on Mars must be chosen where life may have occurred (i.e. areas which had long standing water), and within these distinct locations search for key signatures or bio-markers of a possible

Methane Production on Mars-Relevant Clay Minerals and Simulant Regolith.

Over the course of Martian history, the presence of atmospheric carbon dioxide and potential subsurface molecular hydrogen (H2), in addition to potential surface and subsurface liquid water, suggests that the Martian subsurface, at minimum, may once have been habitable, particularly to autotrophic chemosynthetic microorganisms. In addition, the widespread nature of clays and other minerals on Mars could have provided sufficient nutrients to support microbial life. Here we tested four methanogenic species (Methanosarcina barkeri, Methanobacterium formicicum, Methanothermobacter wolfeii, and Met

Ultraviolet and biological effective dose observations at Gale Crater, Mars.

The incident ultraviolet (UV) irradiance on the surface of Mars is strongly sterilizing and plays a critical role in atmospheric and near-surface photochemistry. The Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS) instrument, which includes the first UV sensor sent to Mars on board the Curiosity rover, has been measuring the UV irradiance at Gale Crater since 2012, providing ground-truth data regarding seasonal and short-term variability of the UV radiation at the surface of another planet. Here, we analyze the REMS UV measurements for a period of >5 Martian years to retrieve biological effectiv

Near-surface liquid water on Mars inferred from seasonal marsquakes.

Exploring the presence and behavior of water on Mars is critical for understanding the planet's geological evolution, hydrological processes, and potential habitability, which has been a central objective of past and ongoing Martian exploration missions. Martian geomorphology provides evidence of ancient groundwater activity, but confirmation of present-day liquid water remains limited. Here, we infer near-surface brines confined to meter-scale depths in regions north of about 30 °N in the northern hemisphere, based on the analysis of seasonal variations in marsquake seismicity and thermal mod

Bacterial model membranes under the harsh subsurface conditions of Mars.

Biomembranes are a key component of all living systems. Most research on membranes is restricted to ambient physiological conditions. However, the influence of extreme conditions, such as the deep subsurface on Earth or extraterrestrial environments, is less well understood. The deep subsurface of Mars is thought to harbour high concentrations of chaotropic salts in brines, yet we know little about how these conditions would influence the habitability of such environments. Here, we investigated the combined effects of high concentrations of Mars-relevant salts, including sodium and magnesium p

The Million Person Study relevance to space exploration and Mars.

Understanding the health consequences of exposure to radiation received gradually over time is critically needed. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) bases its safety standards on the acute exposures received by Japanese atomic bomb survivors. Such a brief exposure differs appreciably from the chronic radiation received during a two to three year mission to Mars. NASA also applies an individual risk-based system for radiation protection that accounts for age, sex, smoking history, and individual life styles. Because the Japanese life span study (LSS) reports women to be at

Modelling the transfer of life from Mars to its moons.

We describe a model of transfer of material from Mars to its moons, and the sterilization that material goes through in that transfer. This is used to gain understanding of if there is viable life on Mars, would that also be on the Martian moons. As Mars is under Planetary Protection, this work looks at should the Martian moons also be under Planetary Protection due to the transfer of unsterilized material.

Understanding Sulfate Stability on Mars: A Thermo-Raman Spectroscopy Study.

This work examines the impact of high temperatures from celestial shock events on the stability of sulfates found on Mars (gypsum) and those expected to be present (syngenite and görgeyite). Raman spectroscopy, a cutting-edge technique in space exploration, was used to track their stability. Specifically, a Renishaw inVia™ micro-Raman confocal spectrometer was coupled with an external Linkam THMS600/HF600 temperature-controlled stage to monitor the sample temperature while measuring the main Raman band positions of the sulfates and those of water molecules in these salts across temperatures ra

Investigation of the Cytotoxicity of Mars-Relevant Minerals upon Abrasion.

Since the Viking Labeled Release experiments were carried out on Mars in the 1970s, it has been evident that the martian surface regolith has a strong oxidizing capacity that can convert organic compounds into CO2 and probably water. While H2O2 was suggested originally for being the oxidizing agent responsible for the outcome of the Viking experiments, recent analyses of the martian regolith by the Phoenix lander and by consecutive missions point toward radiation-mediated decomposition products of perchlorate salts as the primary oxidant. In a series of experiments, we have shown that abrasion

Nucleosome serum levels in acute hepatic failure and MARS treatment.

Serum nucleosomes have been suggested to be markers for cell death and apoptosis. Increased hepatocyte apoptosis can be demonstrated in acute liver failure (ALF) as well as acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF). We investigated the relevance of nucleosomes in the setting of acute hepatic failure. Further, we studied the effects of the molecular adsorbent recirculating system (MARS) on this marker of cell death. We measured serum nucleosome concentrations with ELISA in 12 patients with ACLF and 7 patients suffering from ALF, with 14 patients experiencing stable chronic hepatic failure (CHF) as
