Performance and return to sport after injury in professional mixed martial arts.

BACKGROUND: Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is an increasingly popular combat sport incorporating striking and grappling that results in a high incidence of injuries. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of injuries on the return to sport and post-injury performance of professional MMA athletes. We hypothesize that increased age is associated with lower probability of return to sport and diminished post-injury performance. METHODS: Publicly available data (obtained from ESPN.com/MMA, UFC.com, Rotowire.com/MMA) from professional MMA fighters who resigned from fight cards d

Tatami Mats: A Source of Pitted Keratolysis in a Martial Arts Athlete?

Dear Editor, Pitted keratolysis (PK), also known as keratosis plantaris sulcatum, is a non-inflammatory, bacterial, superficial cutaneous infection, characterized by many discrete superficial crateriform ''pits'' and erosions in the thickly keratinized skin of the weight-bearing regions of the soles of the feet (1). The disease often goes unnoticed by the patient, but when it is noticed it is because of the unbearable malodor and hyperhidrosis of the feet, which are socially unacceptable and cause great anxiety to many of the patients. PK occurs worldwide, with the incidence rates varying base

[Injuries in the Martial Arts Judo, Taekwondo and Wrestling - A Systematic Review].

BACKGROUND: Martial arts such as judo, taekwondo and wrestling are regulated, usually athletic duels. The aim is to score better than your opponent or to win. As with any type of sport, athletes in martial arts sustain minor and major injuries, which may have many negative consequences. In addition, sports injuries and their rehabilitation generate high costs to the healthcare system. In contrast to the FIFA 11+ warm-up program, no preventive programs have been postulated for injury prevention in these martial arts. Therefore, the aim of this systematic review was to summarise the latest resea

Identifying Cervical Predictors of Recreational Mixed Martial Arts Participation: A Case-Control Study.

Background: Recreational participation in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) has rapidly increased. Despite consistent evidence of a high injury prevalence in MMA athletes, the neuromuscular implications of regular MMA training remain underexplored. The cervical spine is particularly vulnerable to trauma due to repetitive impacts and high mechanical demands in combat sports. Methods: This case-control study compared cervical spine function and self-reported symptoms between 25 recreational MMA athletes and 25 matched individuals who engaged in general fitness training. Outcome measures included Neck Dis

Levels of biomarkers associated with subconcussive head hits in mixed martial arts fighters.

BACKGROUND: Concussion and the damage resulting from this event related to brain function have been widely studied; however, little is known about subconcussive impacts, especially in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fighters, which is a combat and full contact sport in which most blows are aimed at the head. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to evaluate the biomarker levels associated with subconcussive hits to the head in MMA fighters. METHODS: This is an exploratory study in which 30 male subjects (10 MMA fighters, 10 healthy individuals who practice muscle training, and 10 healthy sedentary individuals

Comparing neuromuscular tests to discriminate striking performance in elite mixed martial arts athletes. J Strength Cond Res XX(X): 000-000, 2026-General upper-body strength and power tests may have limited value for profiling striking-specific performance because they do not replicate the standing, rotation-assisted kinetic chain of punching. We examined whether a standing landmine punch throw (LPT) could better discriminate striking performance in elite mixed martial arts athletes than conventio

Vascular injuries of the head and neck in martial Arts: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Blunt cerebrovascular injury (BCVI) is one of the most feared complications of martial arts practice. Both striking and grappling disciplines place the cervical vasculature at risk either by way of direct blows or application of chokeholds, respectively. Research on BCVI in martial arts remains limited, primarily consisting of case reports. This study aimed to provide a scoping review of BCVI in martial arts. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines, a systematic literature review was performed using PubMed and Ovid Embase databases from date of database inception to October 2024.

Brain trauma characteristics for lightweight and heavyweight fighters in professional mixed martial arts.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a sport where the fighters are at high risk of brain trauma, with characteristics, such as the frequency, magnitude, and interval of head impacts influencing the risk of developing short- and long-term negative brain health outcomes. These characteristics may be influenced by weight class as they may have unique fighting styles. The purpose of this research was to compare frequency, magnitude, and interval of head impacts between lightweight and heavyweight fighters in professional MMA. Frequency, interval, event type, velocity, and location of head impacts were doc

An analysis of the relationship between hostility and training in the martial arts.

Contrasting views and data are available on the issue of whether combative sports facilitate or reduce aggression. In the present study levels of hostility were assessed in two groups of martial arts students using the Buss-Durkee Inventory. Levels of hostility on a variety of the sub-scales were compared with scores from similar samples of participants in a body contact, aggressive but non-combative sport (rugby football) and a competitive sport with no body contact or direct aggression (badminton). When the effects of age and length of training were controlled by use of partial correlation t

Injury rates in martial arts athletes and predictive risk factors for lower limb injuries.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies attempted to identify possible risk factors for acute and overuse injuries in several sports disciplines such as running, gymnastics or team sports. Given the lack of scientific works focused on risk factors for lower limb injuries in martial arts, the present study was aimed to investigate foot anatomy, anthropometric measures, and other background information as possible risk factors of injury in barefoot athletes practicing judo, karate, kung fu, Thai boxing, or aikido. In addition, the injury rates were evaluated in relation with the different martial art style

Can height categories replace weight categories in striking martial arts competitions? A pilot study.

In most combat sports and martial arts, athletes compete within weight categories. Disordered eating behaviors and intentional pre-competition rapid weight loss are commonly seen in this population, attributed to weight categorization. We examined if height categories can be used as an alternative to weight categories for competition, in order to protect the health of athletes. Height and weight of 169 child and adolescent competitive karate athletes were measured. Participants were divided into eleven hypothetical weight categories of 5 kg increments, and eleven hypothetical height categories

A systematic evaluation of musculoskeletal injuries in mixed martial arts athletes: a meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Mixed martial arts (MMA) is a popular combat sport including wrestling, boxing, and martial arts, which involves danger and violence. It is reported to have one of the greatest injury rates among different sports, limits participation, and often consists of considerable medical costs. The available literature on MMA injuries is sparse and requires a comprehensive review of injuries in this popular sport. This systematic review and meta-analysis was conducted with the aim of critically evaluating the epidemiological literature on injury patterns, mechanisms, and associated risk fa

Neuropsychological Health in Mixed Martial Arts Fighters and Combat Sport Athletes: A Scoping Review.

Despite safety modifications in mixed martial arts (MMA), traumatic brain injuries remain a significant concern across combat sports due to repetitive head impacts sustained during training and competition. While acute physical effects are well described, long-term cognitive, structural, and psychological consequences of repetitive head trauma in MMA, boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, and other combat sports remain understudied. This scoping review aimed to map the existing literature evaluating these consequences in combat sport athletes. A structured search of PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science

The Clinical Management of Professional Mixed Martial Arts Athletes Returning to Play after ACDF.

Cervical spine injuries in mixed martial arts athletes present unique challenges, especially regarding return to play after anterior cervical discectomy and fusion. While single-level anterior cervical discectomy and fusion has shown favorable return to play outcomes in collision sports, mixed martial arts involves higher cervical impact forces, increasing the risk of adjacent segment disease, muscle imbalances, and proprioceptive deficits. Return to play following multilevel anterior cervical discectomy and fusion remains controversial, with limited data and no standardized guidelines. Rehabi

The role of psychological resilience and aggression in injury prevention among martial arts athletes.

INTRODUCTION: For martial artists, the ability to manage reactions in the face of adversity and bounce back after a stressful event can have major impact on performance. The scope of the research is to investigate martial artists' level of resilience and aggression (Go-ahead, Foul play, and Assertiveness factors), what is specific to athletes and who have suffered from moderate and/or severe injuries (in terms of resilience and three factors of aggression examined), and test the possibility that a psychological variable under investigation can predict athletes' injury severity.
