INTRODUCTION: Mature teratoma represents 60 % of germinal cells tumours of the mediastinum. Most patients with these tumours are asymptomatic, so the neoplasms are usually discovered by accident during routine chest X-ray examination. They have specific and almost pathognomonic radiological features. We present a case of hemangiopericytoma arising in the superior mediastinum. A 48-year-old man demonstrated a superior mediastinal mass lesion on chest x-ray and was admitted to our hospital. A CT scan of the chest showed a well-circumscribed, heterogenously-enhanced mass, 7.0 x 6.5 x 6.5 cm in size, located in the right superior posterior mediastinum, compressing the trachea. The tumor was extirpated by surgical resection. Based on the histological findings, electron microscopic findings, and immunohistochemical studies, the tumor was diagnosed as hemangiopericytoma.

A 53-year-old male was admitted with complaint of bloody sputum. The chest X-ray film revealed a solitary round mass with cavity formation in the left upper lung field. A diagnosis of pulmonary cryptococcosis was made by the percutaneous lung biopsy. As his chest X-ray film did not improve even by administration of antimycotic agents for 6 months, he underwent partial resection of left upper lobe. Thus, the percutaneous lung biopsy was a significant procedure for the definitive diagnosis of this case.

Solitary fibrous tumors of the pleura (SFTP) are rare neoplasms.
