Influence of the Mass Media and Body Dissatisfaction on the Risk in Adolescents of Developing Eating Disorders.

Media influence may lead adolescents to internalize patterns of physical beauty, resulting in dissatisfaction with their own bodies when they are unable to match up to these patterns. In the constant search for an 'ideal body', adolescents may begin to develop risk behaviors for the development of eating disorders (ED). The object of this study was to analyze the influence of the mass media on body dissatisfaction (BD) and on ED in adolescents, comparing genders. We also analyzed the influence of BD on the risk of developing unsuitable eating behaviors, with risk of ED, comparing genders. A cr

In-depth investigation of interpersonal discussions in response to a safer sex mass media campaign.

We know from theory and limited research that people talk about campaign messages-and that these conversations may play an important role in campaign reach and possibly even efficacy. We know very little, however, about what individuals talk about and with whom they talk. The current study seeks to fill this gap by reporting qualitative and descriptive quantitative data from interviews conducted with 139 young adults about conversations that took place in the context of a large, televised safer sex mass media campaign. Results indicated that public service announcements (PSAs) were often viewe

Associations between social media use, body mass index, and body image among pregnant women.

BACKROUND: Body image during pregnancy is an important psychosocial factor that influences maternal well-being. Emerging evidence suggests that both social media exposure and body mass index (BMI) may shape body image perceptions during this period. This study examined the associations between social media use, BMI, and body image in pregnant women. METHODS: This cross-sectional, descriptive, and correlational study was conducted with 272 pregnant women recruited through convenience sampling from the gynecology and obstetrics outpatient clinics of a state hospital in the Mediterranean region o

Cancer-related stigma in the USA and Israeli mass media: an exploratory study of structural stigma.

PURPOSE: Cancer is considered a stigmatized condition in many cultures. One key cultural site that produces illness-related structural stigma is mass media. This study explored the social construction of cancer-related stigma in mass media during the time of COVID-19. Specifically, we compared how cancer-related stigma is constructed in two contexts: American and Israeli mass media. METHODS: Two samples were drawn: all articles that mentioned cancer and published in a 4-month period in USA Today (N = 117) and Israel Today (N = 108). Inductive Thematic Analysis was used to analyze the articles

Impact of a negative emotional antitobacco mass media campaign on French smokers: a longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Mass media campaigns to encourage smoking cessation have been shown to be effective in a context of comprehensive tobacco control programme. The effectiveness of antismoking ads that evoke negative emotions remains unclear, in particular in countries with high smoking prevalence and among smokers with low perceived susceptibility, low self-efficacy or who are not users of smoking cessation services. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate short-term and long-term effects of a 1-month French national highly emotional media campaign, with a focus on these specific targets. DESIGN: A 6-month longitu

An evaluation of mass absorption cross-section for optical carbon analysis on Teflon filter media.

UNLABELLED: Black carbon (BC) or elemental carbon (EC) is a by-product of incomplete fuel combustion, and contributes adversely to human health, visibility, and climate impacts. Previous studies have examined nondestructive techniques for particle light attenuation measurements on Teflon® filters to estimate BC. The incorporation of an inline Magee Scientific OT21 transmissometer into the MTL AH-225 robotic weighing system provides the opportunity to perform optical transmission measurements on Teflon filters at the same time as the gravimetric mass measurement. In this study, we characterize

Autocorrelation and Multifractal Detrended Fluctuation Analyses Reveal Superdiffusive Mass Transport in Solvent-Filled Nanoporous Media.

Fluorescence fluctuation spectroscopy experiments were conducted to better understand the complex mass transport dynamics of organic molecules in liquid-filled nanoporous media. Anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membranes incorporating 10 and 20 nm diameter cylindrical pores were employed as model materials. Nile red (NR) dye was used as a fluorescent tracer. The dye was dissolved separately in ethanol and toluene at a concentration of 20 nM and used to fill the membrane nanopores. Confocal fluorescence microscopy was employed to capture photon intensity time series data reflecting apparent diffusio

MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry reveals a highly complex bacterial profile of otitis media with effusion.

OBJECTIVES: With conventional microbiological methods, a significant proportion of middle ear effusion (MEE) proves to be sterile. Accurate molecular biological techniques have been used to identify only pathogenic bacteria. Matrix assisted laser desorption and ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) is an adequate tool for the precise and simultaneous identification of a wide range of bacterial species from a small sample. The aim of this study was to explore the use of MALDI-TOF MS in revealing the frequency and complexity of bacterial flora in MEE in otitis media with eff

Locally-calibrated light transmission visualization methods to quantify nonaqueous phase liquid mass in porous media.

Five locally-calibrated light transmission visualization (LTV) methods were tested to quantify nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) mass and mass reduction in porous media. Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) was released into a two-dimensional laboratory flow chamber packed with water-saturated sand which was then flushed with a surfactant solution (2% Tween 80) until all of the PCE had been dissolved. In all the LTV methods employed here, the water phase was dyed, rather than the more common approach of dyeing the NAPL phase, such that the light adsorption characteristics of NAPL did not change as dissoluti

Mass media coverage and vaccination uptake: evidence from the demand for meningococcal vaccinations in Hungary.

We estimate the effect of mass media coverage of the meningococcal disease on the uptake of meningococcal vaccinations in Hungary. Our analysis is based on administrative county-level data on vaccination purchases linked to indicators of media coverage of the meningococcal disease and to administrative records of disease incidence. Using geographical and time variations in these indicators, our fixed effects estimates indicate a strong positive effect of mass media coverage of the disease on the rate of vaccination with all types of the meningococcal vaccine. At the same time, we do not find e

Effects of a mass media intervention on HIV-related stigma: 'Radio Diaries' program in Malawi.

HIV-related stigma has been recognized as a significant public health issue, yet gaps remain in development and evaluation of mass media interventions to reduce stigma. The Malawi 'Radio Diaries' (RD) program features people with HIV telling stories about their everyday lives. This study evaluates the program's effects on stigma and the additional effects of group discussion. Thirty villages with 10 participants each were randomized to listen to RD only, to the program followed by group discussion or to a control program. Post-intervention surveys assessed four stigma outcomes: fear of casual

Evaluating Different Storage Media for Identification of Taenia saginata Proglottids Using MALDI-TOF Mass Spectrometry.

Taenia saginata is a helminth that can cause taeniasis in humans and cysticercosis in cattle. A species-specific diagnosis and differentiation from related species (e.g., Taenia solium) is crucial for individual patient management and disease control programs. Diagnostic stool microscopy is limited by low sensitivity and does not allow discrimination between T. saginata and T. solium. Molecular diagnostic approaches are not routinely available outside research laboratories. Recently, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) mass spectrometry (MS) was proposed as a

Comparative Analysis of the Mass Spectra of Mycobacterium abscessus Complex Strains Isolated on Various Nutrient Media.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABSc) causes chronic infection in patients with concomitant structural changes in the respiratory tract, which is especially important for patients with cystic fibrosis. To isolate an MABSc culture from clinical material, a variety of nutrient media are used. For species determination of microorganisms isolated on these media, additional identification methods are used, for example, polymerase chain reaction, sequencing, or mass spectrometry. The latter method is relatively easy to implement but requires improvement, due to the identification inacc
