A nationwide survey was conducted in Finland to estimate prevalence of bovine mastitis, distribution of mastitis pathogens, and in vitro antimicrobial susceptibility of different mastitis pathogens. In total, 12,661 quarter milk samples were collected from 3282 dairy cows at 216 farms. These were randomly selected from a database covering all Finnish dairy farms. Quarter milk samples collected by the dairy advisors were submitted for somatic cell counting, bacteriological examination, and testing for antimicrobial susceptibility. If the milk SCC of a cow or of a quarter exceeded 300,000/mL, th

Experimental mastitis induced with a single intramammary injection of Listeria monocytogenes was compared with two naturally occurring cases. Four strains of L. monocytogenes, two of serotype 1/2a and two of serotype 4b were used for the experimental infections and two diametrically opposed quarters of four cows were inoculated with 300 cfu. Bacteriological examination and somatic cell counts of quarter foremilk samples were performed weekly for at least 6 months after challenge. All the inoculated quarters developed chronic subclinical mastitis with occasional clinical episodes. The results w

INTRODUCTION: There is an urgent need to develop therapeutic options for biofilm-producing Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus). Therefore, the renewed interest in essential oils (EOs), especially carvacrol, linalool and eugenol, has attracted the attention of our research group.
METHODS: Multidrug resistance and multivirulence profiles in addition to biofilm production of S. aureus strains isolated from cows with mastitis were evaluated using both phenotypic and genotypic methods. The antimicrobial and antibiofilm activities of EOs were tested using both in vitro and molecular docking studies.

The aim of this study was to determine the mechanisms of staphylococcal resistance to methicillin. CNS (n = 100 isolates) were prepared from the mammary inflammatory secretions of 86 cows from farms located in the Lublin region. Methicillin-resistant isolates constituted 20.0% of all CNS. Staphylococcus sciuri (n=8) and Staphylococcus xylosus (n=6) were most abundant, followed by Staphylococcus chromogenes (n=3), Staphylococcus haemolyticus (n=2) and Staphylococcus warned (n=1). The mecA gene was found in 50.0% of MRCNS (10.0% of all CNS isolates) belonging to two species: S. sciuri and S. xyl

Staphylococcus aureus is a major pathogen responsible for both clinical and subclinical bovine mastitis. Its ability to persist within the mammary gland and evade host immune responses makes it particularly significant for herd health and dairy production. So, this study aimed to evaluate whether the presence and diversity of S. aureus virulence genes mastitis-causing are associated with the onset and severity of mastitis in dairy cows. We analyzed 50 S. aureus isolates obtained from milk samples of cows with subclinical mastitis (SM) and 101 isolates from clinical mastitis (CM), including 28

Although hemagglutination by Staphylococcus aureus has been associated with the pathogenesis of bovine mastitis, this trait has not been characterized with regard to human disease. In this study, the prevalence of hemagglutination in 100 strains of S. aureus responsible for bovine mastitis or human bacteremia, was characterized. Under optimum conditions hemagglutination was noted in 23% of the bovine strains, but only 13% of human strains, leading us to conclude that this trait is not a significant virulence determinant in human systemic infection. Additional studies indicate the hemagglutinin

INTRODUCTION: Bovine mastitis is the most common disease affecting the dairy industry, with staphylococci being considered as one of the most significant and prevalent causes. This study aimed to assess the presence of staphylococcal subclinical mastitis (SCM) in Uruguayan dairy farms and to identify Staphylococcus aureus (SA) and non-aureus staphylococci (NAS) in milking cows. In addition, the antibiotic susceptibility of isolated staphylococci was evaluated.
METHODOLOGY: We tested 546 apparently healthy milking cows from 11 farms for detecting SCM using the California Mastitis Test (CMT). T

Mastitis in cattle is a major health problem as well as incurring high costs for the dairy industry. To assess the suitability of precision-cut bovine udder slices (PCBUS) for bovine mastitis studies, we infected PCBUS with 2 different Staphylococcus aureus strains. Accordingly, we investigated both the tissue response to infection based on immune mediators at the mRNA and protein levels and the invasion of bacteria within the tissue. The studied proteins represent immune mediators of early inflammation [IL-1β, tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2)] and showed a time-depende

Bovine mastitis is an infectious disease that affects the mammary gland of dairy cattle with considerable economic losses. Staphylococcus aureus is the main microorganism involved in this highly contagious process, and the treatment is only using antibiotics. Currently, the search for new treatment and/or compounds is still in need due to microbial resistance. In this work, we evaluated the potential of eugenol and thymol derivatives against S. aureus strains from bovine mastitis. On that purpose, nine derivatives were synthesized from eugenol and thymol (1-9), and tested against 15 strains of
