[Tympanoplasty without mastoidectomy for active otitis media].

Objective:The study aims to assess the effect of tympanoplasty without mastoidectomy for the middle ear under different infected states.Method:One hundred and thirteen cases (113 ears) with chronic otitis media (COM) received tympanoplasty without mastoidectomy. All the patients were found inflammatory proliferative lesions in the mastoid and tympanic antrum via CT scan before surgery and were followed up over 1 year. The patients were placed into the infected ear group (72 ears) and uninfected ear group (41 ears) according to the infective condition. We used SPSS statistical software to analy

Long-term outcome of modified radical mastoidectomy.

The primary aim of treatment of cholesteatoma is to attain a dry, safe, stable ear, free of disease. Maintaining or improving hearing is important but the pursuit of a hearing result should not compromise this primary aim. This study reviews the long-term outcome of 133 patients, suffering from advanced disease, who underwent modified radical mastoidectomy between 1995 and 2000. Of these, 49 per cent had had previous mastoid surgery elsewhere. A dry, waterproof ear was attained in 95 per cent of patients. In 77 per cent of patients, hearing was unchanged or improved. In this period, there were

Temporal bone histopathology of open mastoidectomy cavities.

Open cavity mastoidectomy remains the principle surgical treatment of middle ear cholesteatoma in the United Kingdom. A significant proportion of mastoid cavities are prone to intermittent or continuous discharge. In this study the temporal bone histopathology of four patients who had undergone open cavity mastoidectomy is presented. Cavities were predominantly lined with stratified keratinizing squamous epithelium. Residual air cells were obliterated by fibrous tissue, with no evidence of persistent respiratory epithelium. Where inflammatory changes were found, these consisted of areas of gra

Relevance of Modified Bondy Mastoidectomy in Pediatric Cholesteatoma.

INTRODUCTION: Humans who have close contact with livestock, wild or feral animals can risk acquiring zoonotic infections such as brucellosis, Q fever, and leptospirosis. Human infection with Brucella suis (swine brucellosis) usually follows occupational or recreational exposure to infected animals. Worldwide, many cases of human infection follow contact with infected feral pigs. In Australia there is a growing market for the export of 'wild boar' and a considerable number of people are involved in feral pig hunting. However, feral pig hunters are often hard to reach with health strategies. Acc

Dural tear post mastoidectomy repaired with Dura Gen.

Dural exposure may occur during the course of thinning the tegmen tympani and tegmen mastoideum in mastoid procedure. If large area of dura is exposed or lacerated, cerebrospinal fluid and brain herniation may enter the mastoid cavity. We report a case of a patient with injured dura mater and tegmen mastoideum during mastoidectomy for chronic suppurative otitis media with cholesteatoma managed by using DuraGen. The dura mater and tegmen defect healed totally showing the success of the procedure. A collagen matrix like DuraGen is an option for repairing dural tear in mastoid region.

Radical mastoidectomy cavity myiasis caused by Wohlfahrtia magnifica.

In this article, a Wohlfahrtia magnifica otomyiasis case, a 31-year-old, non-mentally retarded patient who had undergone radical mastoidectomy previously is presented. Maggots in the radical mastoidectomy cavity were removed then topical treatment was applied. The maggots were identified as W. magnifica. In cases of myiasis, identification of larvae following direct extraction and application of preventative methods is essential.

Delayed labyrinthine fistula in canal wall down mastoidectomy.

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: This article is a retrospective review of 5 cases of delayed labyrinthine fistula in patients with a longstanding canal wall down mastoidectomy. MATERIAL: All patients had a long-term postoperative follow up with no evidence of complications till they suddenly started to have vertigo. The symptoms were caused by a bony erosion of the lateral semicircular canal detected on physical examination or by a CT-scan. There was no evidence of a recurrent cholesteatoma. RESULTS: The patients underwent surgery in order to close the fistula, with a good result. In all cases, a fact

Radical mastoidectomy: its place in otitic intracranial complications.

Standard recommended treatment for patients with intracranial complications from otitis media, has been radical mastoidectomy, whether cholesteatoma is present or not. This was established in the pre-antibiotic era to improve survival. Over a six-year period, from January 1985 to December 1990, 268 patients were admitted with intracranial and extracranial complications of otitis media. The prospective treatment consisted of antibiotics and surgery. Surgery entailed mastoidectomy and drainage of intracranial collections of pus in all patients. However, prospectively in these patients the ear pa

Comparison of the 3D-Exoscope and Operating Microscope in Mastoidectomy.

OBJECTIVES: The operating microscope (OM) commonly used in ear surgeries has several disadvantages, including a low depth of field, a narrow field of view, and unfavorable ergonomic characteristics. The exoscope (EX) was developed to overcome these disadvantages. Herein, we compared OM and EX during mastoidectomy and found out the feasibility of the EX. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective randomized comparative study. SETTING: Tertiary academic medical center. PATIENTS: Patients who had mastoidectomy for chronic otitis media with or without cholesteatoma between January 2022 and April 2022. INTERVEN

An endoscopic hydro-mastoidectomy technique for cholesteatoma surgery.

OBJECTIVE: Endoscopic hydro-mastoidectomy, in which mastoidectomy is performed underwater, can be employed during transcanal endoscopic ear surgery for cholesteatoma removal. It was hypothesised that endoscopic hydro-mastoidectomy might take less time than endoscopic non-underwater mastoidectomy because the endoscope does not need to be removed for cleaning. METHODS: This study compared the mastoidectomy and total operative durations between the endoscopic hydro-mastoidectomy (n = 25) and endoscopic non-underwater drilling (control, n = 8) groups. Moreover, it compared the size of resected ar

Skull base osteomyelitis missed in mastoidectomy for cholesteatoma.

Conclusions A high suspicion of skull base involvement should be warranted, even if radiological findings are not atypical, in cases of chronic otitis media (COM) with cholesteatoma. Objective To investigate some clues indicating the development of skull base osteomyelitis (SBO) in patients who received mastoidectomy, through reviewing pre-operative temporal bone computed tomography (TBCT). Method Retrospective review of patients with SBO after mastoidectomy for COM. A total of five patients with SBO after mastoidectomy with available pre-operative TBCTs were enrolled in this study. Results Al

Mastoid subperiosteal abscess in children: drainage or mastoidectomy?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the management of mastoid subperiosteal abscess using two different surgical approaches: simple mastoidectomy and abscess drainage. METHOD: The medical records of 34 children suffering from acute mastoiditis with subperiosteal abscess were retrospectively reviewed. In these cases, the initial surgical approach consisted of either myringotomy plus simple mastoidectomy or myringotomy plus abscess drainage. RESULTS: Thirteen children were managed with simple mastoidectomy and 21 children were initially managed with abscess drainage. Of the second group, 12 children were c

[Acute mastoiditis in children: can mastoidectomy be avoided?].

OBJECTIVE: Mastoidectomy is the standard management for exteriorized mastoiditis. The objective of this study was to assess the results of conservative management of acute mastoiditis and to study the types of bacteria isolated and their sensitivity to antibiotics. METHODS: A retrospective study including children admitted with acute mastoiditis was conducted between 1994 and 2007. Intravenous antibiotics were systematic. Since 2002, mastoidectomy has been replaced by retroauricular puncture and grommet tube insertion. RESULTS: Forty-four children had acute mastoiditis. All but one (temporoz

A case of malignant otitis externa following mastoidectomy.

We present a case of a 63-year-old diabetic male who developed malignant otitis externa following mastoidectomy. Extensive skull base osteomyelitis caused thrombosis of the jugular bulb and subsequent paralysis of cranial nerves VII, IX, X and XII. He was treated aggressively with intravenous antibiotics and debridement of granulation tissue in the mastoid bowl with full recovery of the cranial nerve palsies associated with recanalization of the jugular bulb. We believe this is the first reported case of malignant otitis externa to occur following mastoidectomy with complete recovery of the cr

Reduced mastoidectomy complications with an open meatoplasty stent.

Open-tube stents were compared with standard petroleum gauze packs in meatoplasties after canal-wall-down mastoid surgery to determine whether any difference existed in postoperative complications. Tube stents were associated with much lower incidences of postoperative meatoplasty stenosis and postauricular wound complications in this series.
