Perceptions and use of maternal health services by women in rural coastal Madang Province.

Maternal mortality remains exceptionally high in Papua New Guinea (PNG) at 733 per 100,000 live births. There has been little, if any, improvement in maternal mortality or maternity services since the 1980s. In 1992-1993 a survey of 550 women in rural coastal areas of Madang Province was undertaken to investigate the prevalence of maternal risk factors and parous women's utilization of and attitudes towards the existing health services. Women were classified as at risk on the basis of previous obstetric complications, parity, stillbirths and neonatal deaths. On this basis 67% of women were cla

Inequalities in maternal health service utilisation in Somalia: analysis of the 2020 Somali health and demographic survey.

BACKGROUND: Somalia has one of the highest maternal mortality ratios and low coverage of maternal health services. Evidence on socioeconomic and geographic inequalities across maternal care continuum remains limited. OBJECTIVE: This study examined wealth-related inequalities and determinants of maternal health service utilisation in Somalia. METHODS: We analysed data from the 2020 Somali Health and Demographic Survey (SHDS), including 8,598 ever-married women aged 15-49 years with a recent live birth. Outcomes were at least one antenatal care visit (ANC), health facility childbirth, and post

Investigating the relationship between health and gender equality: What role do maternal, reproductive, and sexual health services play?

Examining the causal nexus between health services and gender equality is of paramount significance in policy formulation and academic inquiry. This paper concentrates on maternal, sexual, and reproductive health, offering a critical narrative review of empirical research exploring the causal relationship between enhanced women's health, stemming from either overall healthcare amelioration or specific interventions, and broader gender equality objectives. A conceptual framework is devised to elucidate the causal pathways between health and gender equality across various dimensions. The final r

Impact of health systems strengthening on coverage of maternal health services in Rwanda, 2000-2010: a systematic review.

From 2000 to 2010, Rwanda implemented comprehensive health sector reforms to strengthen the public health system, with the aim of reducing maternal and newborn deaths in line with Millennium Development Goal 5, among many other improvements in national health. Based on a systematic review of the literature, national policy documents and three Demographic & Health Surveys (2000, 2005 and 2010), this paper describes the reforms and the policies they were based on, and provides data on the extent of Rwanda's progress in expanding the coverage of four key women's health services. Progress took pla

Early effects of COVID-19 on maternal and child health service disruption in Mozambique.

UNLABELLED: This article is part of the Research Topic 'Health Systems Recovery in the Context of COVID-19 and Protracted Conflict'. INTRODUCTION: After the World Health Organization declared COVID-19 a pandemic, more than 184 million cases and 4 million deaths had been recorded worldwide by July 2021. These are likely to be underestimates and do not distinguish between direct and indirect deaths resulting from disruptions in health care services. The purpose of our research was to assess the early impact of COVID-19 in 2020 and early 2021 on maternal and child healthcare service delivery at

Continuum of care for maternal, newborn, and child health: from slogan to service delivery.

The continuum of care has become a rallying call to reduce the yearly toll of half a million maternal deaths, 4 million neonatal deaths, and 6 million child deaths. The continuum for maternal, newborn, and child health usually refers to continuity of individual care. Continuity of care is necessary throughout the lifecycle (adolescence, pregnancy, childbirth, the postnatal period, and childhood) and also between places of caregiving (including households and communities, outpatient and outreach services, and clinical-care settings). We define a population-level or public-health framework based

Male partner involvement in antenatal care: implications for maternal health services in Juba, South Sudan.

BACKGROUND: Male partner involvement in antenatal care (ANC) is recognized as an important strategy for improving maternal and neonatal health outcomes. Active participation of male partners enhances support for pregnant women, promotes timely healthcare utilization, and improves adherence to ANC recommendations. Despite these benefits, male involvement in ANC remains low in many settings. This study assessed the level of male partner involvement, influencing factors, and partner knowledge regarding ANC services in Juba County, South Sudan. OBJECTIVE: To assess the level of male partner invol

Incorporating an intersectional gender approach to improve access to maternal and child health screening services.

BACKGROUND: In the Americas, the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) has promoted initiatives that aim at the elimination of mother-to-child transmitted diseases for over two decades. Although Guatemala has assumed the commitment to improve access and coverage of reproductive and perinatal services, the goals have not yet been reached. Often, the implementation of these efforts is hampered by complexities rooted in social, cultural, and environmental intersections. The objective of this work is to share our experience applying gender intersectionality as a methodological and analytical too

Clinical readiness for essential maternal and child health services in Kenya: A cross-sectional survey.

High rates of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality in Kenya may be influenced by provider training and knowledge in emergency obstetric and neonatal care in addition to availability of supplies necessary for this care. While post-abortion care is a key aspect of life-saving maternal health care, no validated questionnaires have been published on provider clinical knowledge in this arena. Our aim was to determine provider knowledge of maternal-child health (MCH) emergencies (post-abortion care, pre-eclampsia, postpartum hemorrhage, neonatal resuscitation) and determine factors associat

Bridging Equity Gaps in Maternal and NCD Services: Policy Priorities for Bangladesh's Evolving Health Landscape.

BACKGROUND: Over the past decade, Bangladesh has made significant gains in maternal and child health, driven by investments in community-based services, education, and targeted public health interventions. However, disparities in service access and a growing burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continue to undermine the promise of universal and equitable care. OBJECTIVE: This perspective provides a policy-oriented, interceptive synthesis of progress and persistent gaps in five critical domains-maternal care, child nutrition, family planning, immunization, and hypertension-by analyzing p

Women's health and maternal care services: seizing missed opportunities to prevent and manage preterm birth.

PROGRESS: The past ten years have seen uneven developments in women's and adolescents' health and reproductive rights. Globally, reductions of maternal and neonatal mortality rates and adolescent birth rates have been achieved along with improvements in coverage of key reproductive and maternal health services. However, preterm birth rates have not changed significantly. There is still large variation in these rates across the world, with the highest rates occurring in South Asia and sub-Saharan Africa. PROGRAMMATIC PRIORITIES: Effective interventions based on current clinical guidelines are

Health system interventions to floods and heatwaves for maternal and child health services: a realist-informed systematic review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: Floods and heatwaves are becoming more frequent and intense and can disrupt routine maternal and child health (MCH) services. Previous reviews have not systematically examined how context and mechanisms may shape adaptation outcomes. This realist-informed systematic review examines how, why and under what conditions interventions support access to, utilisation of and continuity of routine MCH services during flood and heat events. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: The search strategy was developed by integrating terms from 17 related reviews, refined with the author team and checked by an e

Has India's national rural health mission reduced inequities in maternal health services? A pre-post repeated cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: In 2005, India launched the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) to strengthen the primary healthcare system. NRHM also aims to encourage pregnant women, particularly of low socioeconomic backgrounds, to use institutional maternal healthcare. We evaluated the impacts of NRHM on socioeconomic inequities in the uptake of institutional delivery and antenatal care (ANC) across high-focus (deprived) Indian states. METHODS: Data from District Level Household and Facility Surveys (DLHS) Rounds 1 (1995-99) and 2 (2000-04) from the pre-NRHM period, and Round 3 (2007-08), Round 4 and Annual
