Heat and its effects on maternal and neonatal health care: Evidence from Burkina Faso.

OBJECTIVES: Climate change has a wide range of adverse consequences for human health. The effects of extreme weather on maternal and newborn health, as well as the availability and quality of health services, remain under-researched in the sub-Saharan region. The aim of this study is to examine the effects of heat on pregnant women's use of health services, the health facility working environment and the impact of heat on the quality of care in Burkina Faso, a limited resource country. STUDY DESIGN: We adopted a qualitative approach to address the research objectives. METHODS: This study was

Intrauterine exposure to perfluorinated compounds and overweight at age 4: A case-control study.

AIMS: The aims were to investigate the association between maternal serum levels of perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorohexane sulfonate (PFHxS) and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA) in early pregnancy and overweight in the child at 4 years and to assess potential heterogeneity in exposure effect between strata with different levels of other risk factors for overweight. METHODS: We used a case-control design and included 354 cases (ISO-BMI ≥ 18 kg/m2) and 2 controls per case (ISO-BMI ≤17 kg/m2) from child health care centers in Malmö, Sweden. Controls were se

Obstetric service and perinatal mortality in Norway.

Information on personnel, equipment and care facilities at all maternity institutions has been related to the perinatal mortality among all single births in Norway, 1967--1973. There was a total of 454,358 single births during this seven year period which comprised the study data set. An obstetric score based on personnel and equipment as defined in a previous study has been used to divide the country into three groups of counties, with low, medium and high obstetric scores. Perinatal, fetal and early neonatal (less than seven days) mortality rates specific to birth weight categories in 500 gr

Global burden of maternal and congenital syphilis in 2008 and 2012: a health systems modelling study.

BACKGROUND: In 2007, WHO launched a global initiative for the elimination of mother-to-child transmission of syphilis (congenital syphilis). An important aspect of the initiative is strengthening surveillance to monitor progress towards elimination. In 2008, using a health systems model with country data inputs, WHO estimated that 1·4 million maternal syphilis infections caused 520 000 adverse pregnancy outcomes. To assess progress, we updated the 2008 estimates and estimated the 2012 global prevalence and cases of maternal and congenital syphilis. METHODS: We used a health systems model appr

The association between urbanization and child height: a multilevel study in China.

BACKGROUND: Recent economic development in China has been accompanied by well-documented health inequalities between regions. The impact of individual factors on child height has been widely studied, but the influence of community-level factors has not yet been fully studied. METHODS: The cross-sectional data of 1606 Chinese children aged 5-18 years from the China Health and Nutrition Survey 2011 were used. Multilevel analysis was used to examine the association of community factors (using urbanization index) with child height. Child height was measured following standardized procedures, and

National Program for RMNCH + A: Newer Strategies for Improving the Newborn Health in India.

RMNCH+A is a platform for delivering adolescent, maternal, newborn and child health in an integrated manner using a life cycle approach. The new initiatives under this strategy that would impact newborn health include antenatal corticosteroids in preterm labor, delayed clamping of cord at birth, skin-to-skin contact at birth and Kangaroo mother care, Family participatory care, Lactation management centers and care beyond newborn survival under the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram. Even though the coverage of many of the existing initiatives has been moderately high, there are concerns about th

Does brain-derived neurotrophic factor play a role in the association between maternal prenatal mental health and neurodevelopment in 2-year-old children?

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF)-a crucial modulator of neural development and plasticity-in the association between prenatal maternal anxiety, depression, and perceived stress and child neurodevelopment in a prospective cohort study. METHODS: We included 526 eligible mother-child pairs from the Shanghai Birth Cohort in the study. Maternal mental health was assessed at mid-pregnancy using Zung's Self-Rating Anxiety Scale, Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, and Perceived Stress Scale. The concentration of BDNF in cord blood was measure

Protocol and statistical analysis plan for a randomized controlled trial of the effect of intravenous iron on anemia in Malawian pregnant women in their third trimester (REVAMP - TT).

BACKGROUND: Anemia affects 40% of pregnant women globally, leading to maternal mortality, premature birth, low birth weight, and poor baby development. Iron deficiency causes over 40% of anemia cases in Africa. Oral iron supplementation is insufficient for Low-and-Middle-Income-Countries (LMICs) to meet current WHO targets. We hypothesized that a single intravenous dose of Ferric Carboxymaltose (FCM) may be more effective than oral iron treatment for anemia recovery, particularly in these settings where women present late for antenatal care. METHODS: This is a two-arm parallel open-label indi

Testing Bidirectional Associations Between Maternal and Child Depression During Emerging Adolescence.

IMPORTANCE: Research has consistently shown links between parent and child depression. The prevailing assumption is that parent depression precedes the onset, persistence, and even exacerbation of child depression. However, it is plausible, albeit infrequently tested, that child depression triggers subsequent parent depression. Clarifying the direction and developmental timing of these associations is critical for designing and advocating for family-centered approaches to pediatric care. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the longitudinal bidirectional associations between maternal and child depression f

Maternal sensitivity training programs: preventing child maltreatment through community-based interventions.

Child maltreatment is a major public health concern in Iran, driven by complex socioeconomic and cultural factors. This quasi-experimental study examined whether a culturally adapted maternal sensitivity training program-inspired by the Video-Feedback Intervention to Promote Positive Parenting and Sensitive Discipline (VIPP-SD)-could improve sensitivity and reduce maltreatment risk among 60 Iranian mothers of children aged 0-5 years. Participants from urban and rural health centers were assigned to four groups: urban/rural experimental (n=15 each) and urban/rural control (n=15 each). The inter

2023 ISIR Meeting as the Impetus for Centers for Reproductive Sciences (CERES): Driving reproductive health research forward in Germany.

Reproductive health is crucial for individual well-being, societal advancement, and the health of future generations, encompassing biological, medical, and psychosocial dimensions. However, research in reproductive health in Germany has remained limited, with significant gaps that demand attention. To address these gaps, there is an urgent need for focused research, particularly among emerging scientists in academic medical institutions. In response to this need, the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) established five interdisciplinary centers dedicated to reproductive health in

The true cost of maternal death: individual tragedy impacts family, community and nations.

The death of a woman in pregnancy and childbirth is globally considered an individual tragedy and a human rights violation. Given the inequities in death that occur to marginalized, poor, and vulnerable women in low and middle income countries, there is no doubt that maternal death is a horrific injustice. However, the long term global burden of disease goes far beyond this tragedy. Recent research is demonstrating that there are disastrous consequences in infant and child mortality, loss of economic opportunities, spiraling cycles of poverty in the families and communities where women die giv
