Implications of Federal Nutrition Policy Changes for Maternal and Child Health.

Signed into law on July 4, 2025, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA) fundamentally changes the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the largest food assistance program in the United States and a key support for maternal and child food and nutrition security. The OBBBA reduces SNAP eligibility, expands work requirements, eliminates nutrition education, prevents future benefit increases, and shifts significant costs to states. Combined, these changes may have a direct negative effect on women and children who rely on SNAP for adequate nutrition and may also reduce their access to

An equivalence evaluation of a nurse-moderated group-based internet support program for new mothers versus standard care: a pragmatic preference randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: All mothers in South Australia are offered a clinic or home-visit by a Child and Family Health community nurse in the initial postnatal weeks. Subsequent support is available on request from staff in community clinics and from a telephone helpline. The aim of the present study is to compare equivalence of a single clinic-based appointment plus a nurse-moderated group-based internet intervention when infants were aged 0-6 months versus a single home-visit together with subsequent standard services (the latter support was available to mothers in both study groups). METHODS/DESIGN: T

Maternal postpartum depression risk differentially affects infant development across sociocultural groups.

BACKGROUND: Maternal postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern with well-documented implications for children's developmental outcomes. Despite growing evidence of these effects, limited attention has been given to potential sociocultural differences in how PPD influences child development. To address this gap, the present study utilized a nationally representative dataset to examine whether the associations between maternal PPD risk and developmental delays in children vary across two major sociocultural groups in Israel: The Jewish and Muslim-Arab populations. Embedding nurse home visiting in universal healthcare: 6-year follow-up of a randomised trial.

OBJECTIVE: Nurse home visiting (NHV) is designed to redress child and maternal health inequities. Of the previous trials to investigate NHV benefits beyond preschool, none were designed for populations with universal healthcare. To address this evidence gap, we investigated whether the Australian 'right@home' NHV programme improved child and maternal outcomes when children turned 6 and started school. METHODS: A screening survey identified pregnant women experiencing adversity from antenatal clinics across two states (Victoria, Tasmania). 722 were randomised: 363 to the right@home programme (

Management of neonatal abstinence syndrome in the newborn nursery.

Maternal drug use and neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) are being seen across the United States. NAS occurs with withdrawal disturbances in response to the cessation of the pregnancy exposure. The clinical presentation of a newborn with NAS can include gastrointestinal, neurologic, vasomotor and respiratory symptoms. Assessment of newborns with NAS can often present as a challenge to maternal-child nurses. Treatment can include supportive care as well as pharmacologic therapies.

Effects of computerized decision support on maternal and neonatal health-worker performance in the context of combined implementation with performance-based incentivisation in Upper East Region, Ghana: a qualitative study of professional perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Computerized decision support systems (CDSS) and performance-based incentives (PBIs) can improve health-worker performance. However, there is minimal evidence on the combined effects of these interventions or perceived effects among maternal and child healthcare providers in low-resource settings. We thus aimed to explore the perceptions of maternal and child healthcare providers of CDSS support in the context of a combined CDSS-PBI intervention on performance in twelve primary care facilities in Ghana's Upper East Region. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative study drawing on semi-

Pregnancy and the Opioid Epidemic.

Opioid use disorder (OUD) in pregnancy is increasing, which often results in poor maternal and neonatal outcomes including neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) as a result of lack of prenatal care and inadequate substance use disorder management. Practice guidelines have been developed to manage OUD during and after pregnancy for mother and baby, but barriers exist, limiting comprehensive implementation. To reduce the impact of OUD in pregnancy and associated maternal and neonatal sequela, implementing compassionate evidence-based care and a non-punitive response is needed. A stigma-free approac

The Effect of Healthcare Worker Density on Maternal Health Service Utilization in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Facility births and antenatal care (ANC) are key to improving maternal health. This study evaluates the relationship between physician and nurse/midwife densities and the use of key maternal health services in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). We matched individual-level maternal health service indicators from Demographic and Health Surveys between 2008 and 2017, to country-level physician and nurse/midwife per-capita densities, across 35 SSA countries. We performed univariate and multivariate probit regression analyses to evaluate the association between healthcare worker (HCW) densities and facility

Multilevel determinants of early childhood health during the first 1,000 days in Saudi Arabia: a scoping review with implications for nursing practice and policy.

BACKGROUND: The first 1,000 days—from conception through 24 months of age—represent a critical and largely irreversible developmental window that shapes child survival, brain architecture, metabolic programming, and lifelong health trajectories. Despite substantial global investment in early childhood development, significant knowledge gaps persist regarding context-specific implementation strategies, particularly in rapidly developing healthcare systems. This scoping review maps determinants of health and development in the first 1,000 days and identifies implications for nursing practice and

Home visits: strategies to protect the breastfeeding newborn at risk.

The breastfeeding mother whose infant is at risk for lactation failure that may lead to dehydration, weight loss, and hyperbilirubinemia can be assisted and supported in the home by maternal-child nurses, certified as lactation consultants, working collaboratively with the attending physician, midwife, or nurse practitioner. In this article, case reports illustrate interventions carried out in the home. Risk factors and clinical indicators of breastfeeding problems usually are present before hospital discharge. Health care providers should be on the alert for them so that management strategies
