Risk assessment of coral reef vulnerability to climate change and stressors in tropical islands: The case of Mauritius.

Coral reefs play a critical role in the socio-economic development of oceanic islands, besides offering coastal protection against the destructive forces of the sea under storm conditions. A Multi-Criteria Decision Making-based geospatial model is used which combine highly influential climatic, ecological, and anthropogenic reef degradation factors in view of revealing regions of high coral reef vulnerabilities to inform ecosystems conservation and management. Further investigation of the coastal seawater temperature trend revealed a rise in sea surface temperature approximating 0.66 °C over t

An assessment of zoonotic and production limiting pathogens in rusa deer (Cervus timorensis rusa) from Mauritius.

A population of approximately 70,000 rusa deer (Cervus timorensis russa) represents the most important mammal species reared for food on the island of Mauritius, being the main source of red meat for the local population. However, very limited information is available on the circulation of pathogens affecting the productivity and health of this species. To produce baseline data on the circulation of infectious pathogens in rusa deer under production, a serological survey and/or direct pathogen detection for six selected infectious diseases was undertaken in 2007 in a sample of 53% of the herds

A profiling of faecal parasites in horses in Mauritius and resistance to Fenbendazole at one horse-riding stable.

Mauritius hosts a population of approximately 900 equids, but no investigations have delved into issues such as the prevalence of equine helminths, anthelmintic usage, and resistance emergence. This study aimed to devise a qualitative and quantitative profile of common helminthic intestinal parasites in equines at eight out of twenty-eight stables (272 horses, 29 % of local population) and to determine whether helminthic intestinal parasites in equines at one stable have developed resistance to Fenbendazole by quantitatively assessing pre-treatment faecal egg counts, post-treatment faecal egg

A quantitative ethnozoological assessment of traditionally used animal-based therapies in the tropical island of Mauritius.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: There is currently a dearth of documentation on the use of animal-based therapies (ABT) in Mauritius. This study was therefore designed to gather primary folk knowledge on the different ABT used by Mauritians. Failure to document such knowledge can results in losses in both the use of such remedies and in the scientific documentation of the cultural traditions of animals used in the treatment and/or management of human diseases. The aim of the study is to collect, analyze, document and disseminate ABT from the tropical island of Mauritius used against common hum

The public healthcare sector of Mauritius: knowledge of and attitudes toward hearing loss among community health workers.

Mauritius does not have community health workers trained in identifying risk factors for hearing loss or in referring patients for diagnostic testing. It is crucial to gather information about the knowledge of and attitudes toward hearing loss among community health workers before involving them in the identification and intervention of hearing loss in Mauritius. To describe the knowledge of and attitudes toward hearing loss among community health workers in Mauritius. A descriptive survey design with quantitative analysis was used. Using non-probability purposive sampling, 125 community healt

Impact of out of pocket payments on financial risk protection indicators in a setting with no user fees: the case of Mauritius.

BACKGROUND: Mauritius embraces principles of a welfare state with free health care at point of use in any public facilities. However, the health financing landscape changed in 2007 when Private Health Expenditure (PvtHE) surpassed General Government Health Expenditure. PvtHE is predominately out of pocket (OOP) with only 3.4% related to premiums for private insurance. In 2014, Household OOP Expenditure on health accounted for 52.8% of total health expenditure. OOP is known to be regressive and to impact negatively on households' living standards. OBJECTIVES: This paper aims to examine trends

The contribution of seagrass carbon to coastal marine ecosystems around the island of Mauritius, Western Indian Ocean.

Understanding the role of marine vegetation in shaping coastal carbon dynamics and supporting productivity is essential for robust ecological and socio-economic assessments and effective policy development. Our study employed stable isotope analysis (δ13C and δ15N) to investigate the importance of seagrass carbon as a source of nutrition to important invertebrates spanning different trophic levels (i.e., planktonic, filter-feeding and grazing) around the island of Mauritius. Isotope mixing models confirmed high levels of assimilation of seagrass carbon across three trophic levels (dietary prop

Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of Infection Prevention and Control Among Healthcare Workers in a Tertiary Hospital in Mauritius.

Background Many hospitalized patients suffer from healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), particularly drug-resistant infections. Infection prevention and control (IPC) is one of the most cost-effective healthcare investments since most HAIs can be prevented by the implementation of effective IPC interventions. This study aims to examine the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of healthcare workers (HCW) regarding IPC, given that these factors may shape their compliance with IPC guidelines. Methodology A cross-sectional study was co

Coral Fragment Injury Simulating a Sea Urchin Sting: A Rare Case Report from Mauritius in a Tourist.

Tropical tourist destinations frequently encounter marine injuries. Sea urchin stings are commonly seen, but injuries with coral fragments can simulate their presentation, leading to diagnostic dilemmas. We report a case of a 36-year-old male Indian tourist who sustained a puncture wound over the plantar aspect of the foot while walking barefoot in shallow waters of Mauritius. The wound clinically resembled a sea urchin sting. However, wound exploration under aseptic precautions revealed a fragment of coral as the causative foreign agent. The wound was managed with removal of the fragment, irr

Characterizing Antisense Oligonucleotide-Induced Histopathology Findings in Spinal Cord of Mauritius Cynomolgus Monkeys by Molecular Localization Investigation.

The safety of a 2'-O-methoxyethyl antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) was investigated in Mauritius cynomolgus monkeys in a 41-week Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) toxicity study after multiple intrathecal (IT) administrations. Histopathological examination revealed ectopic formation of lymphoid follicles in the spinal cord (SC) at the injection site at all doses and the presence of granular material in neurons of the SC in high-dose animals. The granular material was seen in all the segments of the SC, but mainly in the lumbar segment and persisted at the end of the 26-week recovery period, while

Multiple logistic regression modelling substantiates multifactor contributions associated with sick building syndrome in residential interiors in Mauritius.

This paper presents a mathematical model that depicts the relationship between the possibility of occurrence of common health problems and factors leading to Sick Building Syndrome symptoms in domestic interiors in Mauritius. The prevalence of upper respiratory symptoms (dry eyes, runny nose), central nervous system symptoms (headache, nervousness), and musculoskeletal symptoms (pain/stiffness in shoulders/neck) were found to be elevated when responses were statistically regressed to type of building and age of respondents. The model presented here will be useful in helping to identify and qua

Body composition-derived BMI cut-offs for overweight and obesity in ethnic Indian and Creole urban children of Mauritius.

It is increasingly recognised that the use of BMI cut-off points for diagnosing obesity (OB) and proxy measures for body fatness in a given population needs to take into account the potential impact of ethnicity on the BMI-fat % relationship in order to avoid adiposity status misclassification. This relationship was studied here in 377 Mauritian schoolchildren (200 boys and 177 girls, aged 7-13 years) belonging to the two main ethnic groups: Indian (South Asian descent) and Creole (African/Malagasy descent), with body composition assessed using an isotopic 2H dilution technique as reference. Investigation of the knowledge of safeguarding in sports among medical and paramedical professionals in Rugby Africa, at Mauritius 7s 2024.

BACKGROUND: Safeguarding in sports has emerged as a critical issue globally, particularly for elite athletes in high-risk environments. Despite the presence of operationalised policy frameworks for safeguarding athletes from injury, violence, or harm, limited evidence exists on how well frontline medical professionals in Africa implement these practices. This study, therefore, investigates the extent of safeguarding knowledge, the degree of professional readiness, and the barriers to reporting among medical and paramedical personnel across Rugby Africa. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was co

Awareness of long-term foot complications in people living with diabetes mellitus in Mauritius: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Mauritius has a high disease burden of diabetes mellitus and ranked twelfth globally according to the International Diabetes Federation. According to the non-communicable disease survey 2021, it was found that 19.9 % of the Mauritian population suffers from Type 2 diabetes mellitus. The long-term diabetic foot complications contribute to premature mortality and increased morbidity. Proper knowledge of diabetic foot complications and good foot care practices may help mitigate the long-term burden of diabetic foot complications in Mauritius in particular and Africa in general. Sociodemographic Profile and Clinical Outcomes of Gestational Diabetes Mellitus: A Regional Hospital-Based Cross-Sectional Study From Mauritius.

INTRODUCTION: Mauritius is among the countries with the highest disease burden globally in diabetes mellitus (DM), ranking twelfth in terms of disease impact. Though data is available for DM in Mauritius, there is a lack of data and research on gestational DM (GDM) in Mauritius. This study aimed to bridge this gap to determine the sociodemographic details of GDM patients in the Mauritian context, the prevalence of GDM in Mauritius, identify the risk factors predisposing Mauritian women to GDM, and assess maternal and fetal/neonatal complications of GDM in Mauritius. METHODS: A cross-sectional

Medical Students' Perspectives on Physical, Online, and Hybrid Learning Modalities: A Mixed Methods Study From a Medical School in Mauritius.

INTRODUCTION: Medical schools were not immune to the difficulties posed by the COVID pandemic. Educational institutions were shut down. By April 2020, 73.8% of registered students in 186 countries were adversely affected. The circumstances forced academic institutions to transition to emergency online teaching, despite the controversies of the effectiveness of this method. The absence of face-to-face teaching greatly impacted the clinical placements and affected the physical and practical skills training of many institutions. OBJECTIVE: There is a dearth of data showing how medical students p

A new genotype of hepatitis A virus causing transient liver enzyme elevations in Mauritius-origin laboratory-housed Macaca fascicularis.

Hepatitis A virus (HAV) infects humans and nonhuman primates, typically causing an acute self-limited illness. Three HAV genotypes have been described so far for humans, and three genotypes have been described for nonhuman primates. We observed transiently elevated liver enzymes in Mauritius-origin laboratory-housed macaques in Germany and were not able to demonstrate an etiology including HAV by serology and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). HAV is a rare pathogen in cynomolgus macaques, and since all employees were routinely vaccinated against HAV, it was not a part of the routine vaccination

Unexpectedly high injection drug use, HIV and hepatitis C prevalence among female sex workers in the Republic of Mauritius.

Female sex workers (FSW) often have a disproportionately high prevalence of HIV infection and they, along with their clients, are considered a core group contributing to the transmission of HIV in many countries. In 2010, females who reported having vaginal/anal/oral sex in the last 6 months with a male in exchange for money or gifts, aged ≥15 years, and living in Mauritius were recruited into a survey using respondent driven sampling. Consenting females (n = 299) completed a behavioral questionnaire and provided venous blood for HIV, HCV and HBV testing. HIV seroprevalence among FSW was 28.9
