Lateral rhinotomy and "medial maxillectomy," an en bloc resection of the medial maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus with the lamina papyracea, medial orbital floor, and lacrimal fossa-duct, have been advocated for lateral nasal wall neoplasma. Experience with 35 (of 41) patients followed up at least 30 months (median, 57 months) postoperatively is reported. There was a 9% recurrence for benign tumors and 15% for malignant neoplasms, the latter only in the patients with nonmelanoma malignant neoplasms not receiving postoperative radiotherapy. The most frequent complications were cavity crusting, epi

OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate an anatomic basis for endoscopic medial maxillectomy with excision of the lateral nasal wall to the nasal floor, including the inferior turbinate, and nasolacrimal duct. Transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy involves complete resection of the lateral nasal wall with boundaries that are inferior to the nasal floor; superior to the cribriform plate and fovea ethmoidalis; anterior to the anterior maxillary wall, including the nasolacrimal duct; and posterior to within 5 mm of the eustachian tube. Transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy provides exposure for endosco

The clinical manifestations of the disease lacked specificity, and the clinical symptoms were nasal obstruction, any blood in snively and slightly swelling pain on face. The neoplasm with unsmooth surface looked taupe and maroon, and was brittle and easy blooding. Paranasal sinus CT:crumbly mass lesion within the shadow filled in the left side of the maxillary sinus, and the sinus stopped up,sinus wall bone was absorpt and thinned, front and rear wall and inner wall bone were boundedness broken off, knuckle partly to the nasal cavity. Introduction. An antrolith is a calcified mass within the maxillary sinus. The origin of the nidus of calcification may be extrinsic (foreign body in sinus) or intrinsic (stagnant mucus and fungal ball). Most antroliths are small and asymptomatic. Larger ones may present as sinusitis with symptoms like pain and discharge. Case Report. We report a case of a 47-year-old lady who presented with heaviness on the left side of the face and loosening of the left 2nd molar tooth since two months. CT scan of the osteomeatal complex and paranasal sinuses showed an opacification of bilateral maxillary si

Chondrosarcoma is a very rare neoplasm in the head and neck region. This region is associated with favourable prognosis. Only 340 cases of chondrosarcoma of the larynx and nearly 300 of sinus maxillaris have been reported in this localization. The most reasonable treatment is radical surgery. Radiotherapy and chemotherapy are of little value. Without metastasis the long term prognosis is excellent. Clinical, pathologic and radiologic characterities of these tumors are described and review of the literature is presented. The authors present two cases chondrosarcoma of the larynx and one case ch

A rare case of a 5-year-old female with schwannoma of the maxillary sinus is presented. She had complained of painless swelling of the left cheek and hard palate for a duration of one year. Preoperatively, a CT scan strongly suggested it to be a maxillary cyst with an erupted tooth rather than neoplasm. The tumour was completely removed after embolization of the left internal maxillary artery. The tumour was composed of spindle cells in a palisading pattern and intercellular collagenous fibres. Mitotic figures and atypical nuclei were not observed. Immunohistochemically, the majority of the ce

BACKGROUND: Classic Hodgkin lymphoma is a malignant neoplasm of the lymphatic system that commonly presents with cervical and mediastinal lymphadenopathy. Primary extranodal disease of the head and neck is rare, with only a few cases reported in the literature. In this case report, we describe the presentation, treatment, and clinical outcome of a patient who presented with extranodal Hodgkin lymphoma of the maxillary sinus.
METHODS: We report a case of extranodal classic Hodgkin lymphoma of the maxillary sinus treated with 2 cycles of chemotherapy and consolidative radiotherapy (RT). We also

In a group of 124 patients a site of origin of paranasal sinus and nasal cavity malignancies was evaluated on the basis of computed tomography (CT) and on the basis of operative findings. The most common malignant tumor was squamous cell carcinoma (41, 1%) and then cancers of salivary origin (20, 2%). The most common site of origin was the maxillary sinus (53, 2%) and then the nasal cavity (31, 5%). Within the maxillary sinus the most frequent neoplasm was cancer whereas in the nasal cavity melanoma and olfactory neuroblastoma. In three (2, 4%) patients site of tumor origin demonstrated on CT

We report a case of pleomorphic adenoma (PA) of the maxillary sinus, an unusual and rare location of this frequent benign neoplasm originating from salivary glands and accounting for 70% of all salivary gland tumors, presenting with compressive phenomena from the orbit and the challenges in its differential diagnosis and management. A 66-year-old male presented with progressively worsening exophthalmos over the past 4 months and symptoms of nasal obstruction on the left side for the past year. Clinical evaluation and imaging studies revealed complete occupation of the left maxillary sinus by a

BACKGROUND: Recently, modified endoscopic medial maxillectomy (MEMM) has been described as an alternative technique to open maxillectomy for benign sinonasal neoplasms. However, few reports discuss the efficacy of MEMM for treatment of inflammatory disease of the maxillary sinus. We evaluate the efficacy of MEMM in treating chronic maxillary sinusitis.
METHODS: A retrospective review of patients who underwent MEMM for refractory inflammatory disease between December 2002 and September 2004 was performed. All patients were treated with MEMM alone or as part of an endoscopic sinus surgery proce

Maxillary sinus cancer with metastasis outside of the head and neck is a relatively rare occurrence. We describe two cases of carcinoma of the maxillary sinus that metastasized to the spine and compressed the cauda equina. In the first case, the neurological complication happened synchronously with the primary malignant neoplasm, while in the second instance, cauda equina compression occurred several months later. The treatment of metastatic compression of the cauda equina consisted mainly of radiotherapy, with palliation being achieved in one patient. Survival was expectedly short (3 months)

This report presents a case of embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma (eRMS) located in the left maxillary sinus and invading the orbital cavity in a ten-year-old male patient who was treated at a referral hospital. The images provided from the computed tomography showed a heterogeneous mass with soft-tissue density, occupying part of the left half of the face inside the maxillary sinus, and infiltrating and destroying the bone structure of the maxillary sinus, left orbit, ethmoidal cells, nasal cavity, and sphenoid sinus. An analysis of the histological sections revealed an undifferentiated malignant neo

BACKGROUND: Small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the maxillary sinus, a rare malignant tumor, has a poor prognosis because of its high incidence of metastasis. Moreover, metastatic cancer-induced hepatic rupture, characterized by hemoperitoneum, is infrequent, although several lines of evidences have reported that a wide variety of other neoplasms can cause this usually fatal manifestation.
CASE PRESENTATION: We now present the first case of a 49-year-old man with spontaneous rupture of hepatic metastasis from small cell neuroendocrine carcinoma of the maxillary sinus and ultimately resulte

BACKGROUND: Granulocytic sarcoma is a rare malignant extramedullary neoplasm of myeloid precursor cells, occuring before or after onset of leukaemia. Involvement of the head and neck region is rare, generally concerning the orbit.
AIM: To illustrate imaging findings of granulocytic sarcoma in an unusual location; maxillary sinus.
CASE: We report a case of maxillary sinus granulocytic sarcoma in a 13-month old boy revealed by facial nerve palsy, ptosis and jugal swelling, without any evidence of haematological disorders. The patient underwent computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare, locally invasive neoplasm characterized by the presence of amyloid material that can become calcified. It often is found in the posterior region of the mandible. Such tumors in the maxilla and those that invade the maxillary sinus are extremely rare. This article presents the sixth reported clinical case of a CEOT that invaded the maxillary sinus and extended to the interior of the nasal cavity. The tumor had grown toward the sinus roof, but there was no association with an impacted tooth. Histopathologically, the tumor was composed of

We report a case of a 46 year old female patient with nasal hemangiopericytoma. She complained of left nasal congestion, pus snot for 10 years, sometimes with left nasal bleeding. Physical examination: in the left nasal tract saw red soft neoplasm, roughness surface, easy bleeding when touched. Sinus CT shows: bilateral maxillary sinus, ethmoid sinus, sphenoid sinus and the left posterior nasal cavity lesions, considering inflammation with the formation of polyps, tumor not excluded. The left nasal cavity neoplasm biopsy shows: hemangioma of left nasal cavity. After admission in general anesth
