OBJECTIVES: Sports etiology is one of the most common causes of maxillofacial injuries. This work aimed to provide an up-to-date review of sports-related maxillofacial injuries.
METHODS: An updated review was conducted on Pubmed and Google Scholar. No publication year and language restrictions were applied. Two different search strategies were performed, the first addressed which sports, generally associated with maxillofacial injuries, and the second search was conducted to determine the frequency of maxillofacial injuries associated with each sport individually.
RESULTS: The first search r

BACKGROUND: Maxillofacial injuries comprising hard tissue as well as soft tissue injuries can be associated with traumatic brain injuries due to the impact of forces transmitted through the head and neck. To date, the role of maxillofacial injury on brain injury has not been properly documented with some saying it has a protective function on the brain while others opposing this idea.
AIM: This cross-sectional retrospective study evaluated all patients with maxillofacial injuries. The aim of the study was to analyze the occurrence and relationship of maxillofacial injuries with traumatic brai

PURPOSE: Distinctive mechanisms of primary blast effects have produced a transitional era of facial trauma. Implosion mechanism damage is one of these. Implosion mechanism damage results in injury limited to the gas-containing structures of the auditory canal, paranasal sinuses, gastrointestinal tract, and lungs. Worldwide, the victims of explosive detonations have increased and advanced dramatically. The outcome is greater mortality and morbidity and new types of injuries, especially in the maxillofacial region. Thus, the knowledge of, and experience with, their management should be shared gl

PURPOSE: Studies of trauma patients have described patterns of injuries sustained from unfortunate encounters with large animals. However, the patterns of maxillofacial injuries have yet to be reported. The goal of this investigation was to describe and report on maxillofacial injuries that are associated with interaction with horses.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Charts were selected from the trauma registry by E-code at a level 1 trauma center in Portland, OR. A retrospective review was performed on charts collected from the previous 5 years (1998-2002). Data were collected according to patient, pa

In contrast to the number of reports in the literature describing high velocity injuries of the maxillo-facial region, there are relatively few which deal with civilian type gunshot injuries. The purpose of this study was to undertake a retrospective analysis of 40 cases of low-velocity hand-gun injuries of the maxillo-facial region. The majority of cases were due to assault followed by accidental shootings and failed suicide attempts. Injuries ranged from mild soft tissue damage without fractures to severe, comminuted fractures of the facial bones. In some cases, soft tissue damage was severe

BACKGROUND: Ballistic injuries to the maxillofacial region pose a major reconstructive challenge due to complex anatomy and the need to restore both aesthetic appearance and essential functions such as speech and swallowing. This study evaluates microvascular reconstruction strategies and associated complications in these injuries.
METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study was performed, including patients treated at a level I trauma center during a 10-year period. Inclusion criteria were (1) ballistic injury to the lower face or midface, (2) tissue loss requiring microvascular reconstructio

INTRODUCTION: Maxillofacial ballistic and pyrotechnic injuries represent complex reconstructive challenges due to severe bone and soft tissue loss, infection risk, and high demands for both function and aesthetics. Recent trends favour early, definitive reconstruction with vascularized tissue, but optimal timing and outcomes remain controversial.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients with ballistic or pyrotechnic facial injuries treated between 2010 and 2023 were retrospectively analysed. Data included mechanism of injury, anatomical and soft tissue regions involved, reconstructive approaches, comp

Electric scooters (e-scooters) are becoming increasingly popular amongst the public. Oxfordshire is included as part of the government led e-scooter trial. This study was designed to evaluate maxillofacial injuries occurring following e-scooter accidents. A single-centre retrospective study was conducted from October 2022 to September 2023 reviewing all e-scooter-related maxillofacial injuries which presented to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford. During the study period, forty-nine patients (mean [range] age 28 [13-48] years; 32 [65.3%] male) suffered maxillofacial injuries from riding an

Oral and nasal routes for intubation are often not feasible in maxillofacial fractures. The paper presents our experience of midline and paramedial approaches for submental intubation in the airway management of facial trauma patients. The prospective study included 47 patients with maxillofacial trauma in whom submental orotracheal intubation was performed in 2005-2014. When using midline approach the tube does not always accurately fit into the mandibular lingual groove creating an inconvenience for the surgeon. By paramesial approach the working conditions for the surgeon were the most comf

The management of facial gunshot wounded patients requires the coordination of multiple surgical disciplines to optimize the functional and cosmetic outcome while minimizing overall morbidity and mortality. All reports indicate that early management of these patients must focus on the basis of resuscitation, with major attention given to the status of maintaining the airway, hemostasis and hemodynamic resuscitation. Subsequent management of these patients becomes more controversial in terms of surgical reconstruction: immediate or delayed. Involvement of the use of suicide bombers, the type of
