Worst Life Events and Media Exposure to Terrorism in a Nationally Representative U.S. Sample.

Indirectly experienced negative life events are not considered Criterion A traumatic events per DSM-5 posttraumatic stress disorder diagnostic criteria, yet individuals indirectly exposed to trauma via the media may report these events as peak traumatic experiences. We studied which events people considered to be the "worst" in their lifetimes to gain a better understanding of the types of events individuals consider to be distressing. This longitudinal study included a nationally representative sample of U.S. residents living outside New York (N = 1,606) who were exposed to the September 11th

Environmental cadmium exposure is associated with elevated risk of chronic otitis media in adults.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic otitis media (COM) is caused by an infection of the middle ear, although it may also be associated with environmental pollutants. Recent reports found that cadmium exposure could be toxic to middle ear cell lines, but the role of cadmium in the development of COM in humans has not been examined to date. We hypothesised that environmental cadmium exposure was associated with an increased risk of COM in the general population. METHODS: We analysed cross-sectional data for 5331 adults of 20 years of age or above, obtained from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examinati

Reduced quality of bovine embryos cultured in media conditioned by exposure to an inflamed endometrium.

OBJECTIVE: A suboptimal uterine environment contributes to the bovine repeat breeder syndrome. Subclinical endometritis is a component, so the mechanism by which inflammation affects embryo survival was investigated by assessing the effect of non-cellular products of an inflamed endometrium on embryo development to blastocyst. DESIGN: Endometrial fluid from a lactating dairy cow was collected by lavage using embryo culture medium. Aseptic inflammation was then induced by infusion of glycogen and lavage was repeated 6 h later. The recovered fluid was used to culture Day 5 in-vitro-derived embr

Using social media to highlight inhaled occupational exposures as a cause of lung disease.

INTRODUCTION: The risks to lung health from workplace hazards remain incompletely understood and may still be overlooked by workers, employers and healthcare professionals. We used an online tool to collect European population-based data relating to workplace exposures, training and lung health. METHODS: A targeted industry-specific digital tool, enquiring about the link between respiratory symptoms and work, was made accessible online over a 24-month period. RESULTS: 22 393 individuals (mean age 43.6 years) responded; 55.7% were female, 46.7% completed in English, 19.9% in Portuguese, 17.8%

Is television traumatic? Dreams, stress, and media exposure in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.

The terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, were traumatic for people living throughout the United States. It has been suggested that people living far from the attacks experienced increased stress because of their exposure to the terrorist events via the media, particularly via television. Following a traumatic or stressful event, individuals may have dreams that reflect that experience. As part of a course on dreaming, individuals recorded their dreams both prior to and following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. On September 12, these same individuals reported their activities a

Exposure to violent media: the effects of songs with violent lyrics on aggressive thoughts and feelings.

Five experiments examined effects of songs with violent lyrics on aggressive thoughts and hostile feelings. Experiments 1, 3, 4 and 5 demonstrated that college students who heard a violent song felt more hostile than those who heard a similar but nonviolent song. Experiments 2-5 demonstrated a similar increase in aggressive thoughts. These effects replicated across songs and song types (e.g., rock, humorous, nonhumorous). Experiments 3-5 also demonstrated that trait hostility was positively related to state hostility but did not moderate the song lyric effects. Discussion centers on the potent

Familiarity breeds distortion: the effects of media exposure on false reports concerning media coverage of the terrorist attacks in london on 7 July 2005.

The present experiment investigated whether increased media exposure could lead to an increase in memory distortions regarding a traumatic public event: the explosion of the No. 30 bus in Tavistock Square, London on 7 July 2005. A total of 150 Swedish and 150 UK participants completed a series of questionnaires about their memory of either (i) the aftermath of the explosion, (ii) a non-existent computerised reconstruction of the moment of the explosion, or (iii) non-existent closed circuit television footage of the moment of the explosion. In line with the availability heuristic, U.K. particip

When war sneaks in through the window: Media exposure and trauma during ongoing crises.

OBJECTIVE: Indirect exposure to traumatic events through media has increasingly been linked to trauma-related symptoms, yet little is known about how these effects unfold dynamically during prolonged crises. This 6-week longitudinal study examined the temporal and bidirectional associations between war-related media exposure, subjective media appraisal, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms during the 2025 Israel-Hamas hostage deal. METHOD: A sample of 389 Israeli adults completed weekly assessments of PTSD symptoms, use of traditional and social media for war-related content, and

Psychiatric outcomes after primary and secondary earthquake exposure: effects of loss, media, and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Earthquakes can cause substantial psychiatric morbidity including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). While direct exposure effects are well known less is understood about relapse after indirect exposure. Following the 2023 Kahramanmaraş earthquakes clinicians observed renewed distress among survivors of the 2020 Aegean Sea earthquake. Understanding how media exposure individual factors contribute to symptom reactivation is important for post-disaster care. This study investigated factors linked to PTSD symptom relapse after repeated disaster exposure. METHOD: This prospectiv

The impact of social media screen-exposure time on suicidal ideation among Pakistani adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Adolescence is a crucial life stage for the individual identity formation. The growing employment of social media and screen-exposure among teenagers and the concerning rise in suicide ideation rates in this susceptible group both suggested this study. Thus, we explored the association between adolescents' suicidal ideation and their daily social media screen-exposure. METHODS: We surveyed 502 students, aged 13 to 19 years old, recruited in colleges and universities of Punjab, Pakistan. The survey was based on a 28-item self-reported questionnaire and demographic data collection.

Re-exposure to iodinated contrast media in two patients with prior severe hypersensitivity reaction.

OBJECTIVE: Most allergic reactions to iodinated contrast media can be managed using a pre-treatment protocol involving corticosteroids and antihistamines. However, under certain circumstances, patients may experience severe allergic symptoms despite pre-treatment. CASE REPORT: Two Chinese men with a history of severe contrast allergy and unstable angina underwent a desensitization protocol that allowed for successful percutaneous coronary intervention. CONCLUSION: Rapid desensitization is an effective and safe strategy that may allow other patients with similar allergies to successfully unde

Increased intima-media thickness in rayon workers after long-term exposure to carbon disulfide.

INTRODUCTION: Long-term exposure to carbon disulfide (CS2) is associated with increased cardiovascular mortality. However, previous studies on actual vascular changes showed heterogeneous results. Intima-media thickness of the carotid arteries (IMT) represents an established marker of atherosclerosis and a reasonable surrogate marker for cardiovascular risk. IMT was examined in a large cohort of CS2 exposed workers and the association with cumulative CS2 exposure analysed. METHODS: In a cross-sectional examination, 290 exposed and 137 non-exposed workers in a German rayon-manufacturing plant

Exposure to radiologic contrast media and an increased risk of treated end-stage renal disease.

BACKGROUND: Radiologic contrast media can cause acute renal failure, but whether their repeated use is associated with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) is unknown. METHODS: We compared 716 incident case subjects of treated ESRD with 361 control subjects, frequency matched on age, drawn from the general population (age, 20-65 years). Participants were interviewed by telephone regarding their previous exposure (before initiation of dialysis for case subjects and the study interview for control subject) to various imaging procedures. RESULTS: As expected, the case subjects reported having more im
