[Medical mission of Louis-André Gosse during his trip to Greece (1827-1829)].

Louis-André Gosse (1791-1873), a liberal-minded Geneva physician, went to Greece in 1827 in order to work, for a couple of years, for the Greek State, which had won its independence just a few years ago. When, in 1828, an Egyptian army brought plague back to Greece, Gosse took an active part in the fight against the epidemic. The present author gives a detailed account of Gosse's relation of his experience including treatment and preventive measures.

Patients at Risk for Transfusion-A Six-Year Multicentre Analysis of More Than 320,000 Helicopter Emergency Medical Service Missions.

BACKGROUND: In Europe, ambulances are increasingly being equipped with blood products for prehospital use. Available evidence on the early administration of blood products comes from military medicine and the Anglo-American medical literature; the evidence cannot be easily transferred to European countries. OBJECTIVES: This study assesses the incidence of patients with massive haemorrhage after trauma and the potential need for prehospital blood transfusions. METHODS: Data reported by 37 German air rescue stations between 2015 and 2020 were retrospectively analysed to predict the need for ma

International public health in third world country medical missions: when small legs walk, we all stand a little taller.

Medical and surgical missions in Third World countries are mentally, physically, and financially demanding; however, there are many foot and ankle surgeons volunteering their time because it provides high levels of personal and emotional satisfaction. After many years in the missionary field, we would like to share a compilation study of our long-term experience and outcomes from our international medical and surgical pediatric mission trips to Latin American countries. We hope to instill in others the same passion for this work by sharing our portion of contribution in this vast world of inte

A qualitative narrative review of protocols for women's health on short-term medical missions in Latin America and the Caribbean.

BACKGROUND: Women's health conditions are commonly encountered on short-term medical missions (STMMs) in Latin America and the Caribbean. There have been no previous attempts to describe women's health protocols used by volunteer clinicians. This qualitative study aimed to describe areas of agreement between unpublished women's health protocols from different North American STMM organizations and assess their concordance with published WHO guidelines. METHODS: A systematic web search was used to identify North American STMM sending organizations. Clinical protocols were downloaded from their

A comparative approach to the French medical missions in Brazil and in sub-Saharan Africa before the Second World War.

Franco-Brazilian cooperation in the field of microbiology and tropical diseases dates back to the onset of those disciplines. Physicians were sent over by France, namely Marchoux, Simond and Salimbeni from 1901 to 1905 to study yellow fever, and Emile Brumpt from 1913 to 1914 to teach parasitology. These missions brought in some important results. After confirming that the yellow fever agent was a filterable virus and that Stegomya (Aedes) its only vector, Simond and Marchoux clarified the biology of the mosquito and showed that sexual transmission of the virus could occur. They also set up di

Furuncular myiasis of the foot caused by the tumbu fly, Cordylobia anthropophaga: report in a medical student returning from a medical mission trip to Tanzania.

Cutaneous myiasis in humans is a temporary parasitic infestation of the skin by fly larvae or maggots of a variety of Dipteran families. In the United States, autochthonous cases of myiasis are infrequently seen. Most cases of cutaneous myiasis are acquired when traveling to tropical areas of Africa, Central America or South America. This case report involves a 26-year-old male medical student who visited Tanzania on a medical mission trip. Three weeks following his return to the United States he developed a furuncular lesion on the side of the fifth digit on his right foot, which contained th

Between East and West: Unitarian Service Committee's medical mission in post-World War II Poland.

In the aftermath of the Second World War, Poland faced immense public health challenges amidst widespread destruction and political transformation. This article explores the largely overlooked medical mission of the Unitarian Service Committee (USC) in Poland, situating it within both humanitarian and geopolitical contexts. Drawing on archival research and press accounts, the study reconstructs the USC's multifaceted aid efforts, including its Medical Teaching Mission, the establishment of the Piekary Śląskie hospital, and tuberculosis control initiatives. The analysis highlights how the USC c

Preliminary results of medical research on board the "Mir" orbital complex during its second main mission.

In 1987 the USSR orbital complex "Mir" accomplished its space mission, crewed by Yu.V. Romanenko (326 days), and A.I. Laveykin (about 176 days), who was replaced on the orbit (in consequence of some cardiac function peculiarities revealed in exercise conditions) by A.P. Aleksandrov (about 160 days). During the flight, extravehicular activity in the open space was carried out three times, and conjoint programmes were conducted, over a period of seven days, with an international Soviet-Syrian crew. The most important, fundamental result of the medical studies carried out in this flight seems to

Forming, transfer and globalization of medical-pharmaceutical knowledge in South East Asian missions (17th to 18th c.) - historical dimensions and modern perspectives.

From the 17th to the 18th centuries, missionaries in Southeast Asia dedicated themselves to providing and establishing a professional medical-pharmaceutical supply for the local population and therefore explored the genuine Materia medica for easily available and affordable remedies, especially medicinal plants. In characteristic medical-pharmaceutical compendia, which can be classified as missionary pharmacopoeias, they laid down their knowledge to advise others and to guarantee a professional health care. As their knowledge often resulted from an exchange with indigenous communities, these c

Impact of the Las Vegas Mass Shooting Event on the Graduate Medical Education Mission: Can There Be Growth from Tragedy?

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to determine the psychological and educational impact of the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting on the graduate medical education (GME) mission within two cohorts of resident physicians and attending faculty at two nearby academic trauma centers. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey assessed 55 resident physicians and attending faculty involved in the acute care of the patients from the mass shooting. We measured the psychological impact of the event, post-traumatic growth, team cohesion, social support, and known risk factors for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Additi

Performance assessment of a short-term medical mission (STMM): A multinational assessment across Ecuador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic.

BACKGROUND: STMMs increasingly provide care in low- and middle-income countries, but evaluations often rely on non-standardized, single-country metrics. This study applied the Health Impact Assessment Tool (HIAT) across missions conducted in Ecuador, Honduras, and the Dominican Republic. METHODS: This cross-sectional study surveyed patients, personnel, host-providers, and leadership across three STMMs (July 2023-August 2024) using standardized HIAT domains: cost, efficiency, impact, preparedness, education, and sustainability, each captured through the stakeholder survey(s) specified in the o

Helicopter hoist operations in German mid-range mountains retrospective analysis of incidence, medical characteristics, and mission tactics.

BACKGROUND: Helicopter hoist operations (HHO) are an important option for rescue operations in rugged and challenging terrain. German mid-range mountains are characterized by the versatility of ground conditions, few urban structures, and frequent use for local leisure activities, including the practice of more or less high-risk outdoor sports. This retrospective analysis aims to investigate the incidence of rescue missions in German mid-range mountains requiring HHO. The contributing air rescue bases' operational tactics and the underlying medical characteristics, such as injury patterns and

The gender pain gap in prehospital analgesia: the role of patient and provider gender - an analysis of 106,888 helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) missions.

BACKGROUND: Pain management is a core ethical principle in emergency medicine, yet gender-related differences in analgesic treatment have been reported. This study examines whether patient and emergency physician gender influence prehospital pain management. METHODS: This retrospective observational cohort study included all primary helicopter emergency medical service missions conducted by DRF Stiftung Luftrettung in Germany between January 2012 and June 2025. Adult patients (≥ 18 years) with a Glasgow Coma Scale score ≥ 11 and without airway management were analyzed. Pain severity was asses

The Medical Mission and Modern Core Competency Training: A 10-Year Follow-Up of Resident Experiences in Global Plastic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: The emphasis on cultural competency for physicians and surgeons is increasingly important, as communication with both patients and other providers significantly affects individual and system-wide outcomes. International surgical training has been shown to improve leadership skills, cultural competency, and technical proficiency of participants in short-term follow-up. This study explores the long-term impact of international surgical mission experiences on developing participants' core competencies, professional outcomes, and commitment to global health. METHODS: All 208 plastic a

Management of right ventricular outflow tract reactivity following pulmonary valve dilatation under general anesthesia: experience of a medical mission.

During a recent volunteer medical mission to the Dominican Republic, we administered anesthesia to a child with severe pulmonary valvular stenosis and suprasystemic right ventricular pressure. This patient underwent a balloon pulmonary valvuloplasty but then developed worsening right ventricular outflow tract obstruction that required immediate therapy to prevent a low cardiac output state. As the development of hyperdynamic right ventricular outflow tract obstruction cannot be predicted, we emphasize the need for preemptive hydration and beta-blockade therapy prior to balloon dilatation.

Additional data from clinical examination on site significantly but marginally improve predictive accuracy of the Revised Trauma Score for major complications during Helicopter Emergency Medical Service missions.

INTRODUCTION: The Revised Trauma Score (RTS) accurately identifies trauma patients at high risk of adverse events or death. Less is known about its usefulness in the general population and non-trauma recipients of Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS). The RTS is a simple tool and omits a lot of other data obtained during clinical evaluation. The aim was to assess the role of the RTS to identify patients at risk of major complications (death, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, defibrillation, intubation) in the general population of HEMS patients. Clinical factors beyond the RTS were analyze

Oligoanalgesia in Patients With an Initial Glasgow Coma Scale Score ≥8 in a Physician-Staffed Helicopter Emergency Medical Service: A Multicentric Secondary Data Analysis of >100,000 Out-of-Hospital Emergency Missions.

BACKGROUND: Oligoanalgesia, as well as adverse events related to the initiated pain therapy, is prevalent in out-of-hospital emergency medicine, even when a physician is present. We sought to identify factors involved in insufficient pain therapy of patients presenting with an initial Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score of ≥8 in the out-of-hospital phase, when therapy is provided by a physician-staffed helicopter emergency medical service (p-HEMS). METHODS: This was a multicenter, secondary data analysis of conscious patients treated in primary p-HEMS missions between January 1, 2005, and December

Screen-detected raised blood pressure and gaps in the hypertension care cascade among adults attending a humanitarian medical mission in Ukraine: A cross-sectional study.

Cardiovascular disease is the world's leading cause of death, and raised blood pressure is among its most important modifiable contributors. Conflict tends to interrupt the long-term care that hypertension demands, yet little screening data exist from settings of active conflict. We set out to describe screen-detected raised blood pressure, and the hypertension care cascade, among adults seen at a humanitarian medical mission in Ukraine. In this cross-sectional study we included adults (≥ 18 years) seen consecutively at a MacKay Memorial Hospital mission across three Ukrainian sites in April 2
