Vitamin D status in medical staff in a German university hospital in comparison to wasteworkers in Northern and its association to quality of life: a prospective four-arm cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Vitamin D (25(OH) D) deficiency has a high prevalence in adults in Germany. Due to workplace conditions, hospital staff might be particularly at high risk. Therefore, we determined the 25(OH) D status of medical staff in regard to their field of activity compared to a group of outdoor workers with a focus on quality of life (QoL) and 25(OH)D associated risk factors. METHODS: 25(OH) D was measured in February (winter) and September (late summer) 2021 in medical staff of a university hospital in northern Germany (inpatient vs. surgical vs. administrative workers), and in a group of o

Implementation of electronic medication management systems in hospital settings: a theory-informed systematic review protocol of mechanisms influencing patient safety, operational efficiency and staff experience.

INTRODUCTION: Electronic medication management systems (EMMS) are central to hospital digital transformation and are intended to improve patient safety, operational efficiency and staff experience, but evidence of their impact remains fragmented, inconsistent and context-dependent. Consequently, there is an urgent need to understand how local organisational structures and complex sociotechnical factors drive successful long-term integration. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This systematic review will search MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, Scopus, ABI/INFORM Collection and Business Source Premier for

Impact of a structured medical staff education program on the effect of HIV testing in four multi-specialist hospitals of the mazowieckie voivodeship as a part of the "Stop late presenters" - project.

In half of newly detected cases of HIV infection in Europe, the diagnosis is made late. This has significant impact on the effects of antiretroviral therapy, long-term consequences of the disease, mortality, and the risk of HIV transmission in the environment. As part of the large "STOP Late Presenters" project, the number of HIV tests was assessed in four multi-specialist hospitals in the Mazowieckie voivodeship, which generally carry out over 112,000 hospitalizations per year. First, under the structured research program, the training of medical personnel was carried out in these hospitals,

A Study on the Effect of the Pre-Go-Live Training in Anxiety and Depression of Medical Staff Based on the Data of Wuhan Fangcang Shelter Hospital During COVID-19 in the Era of Big Data.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) broke out in 2019. In the past 4 years, China has adopted many measures to control the epidemic, including building Fangcang shelter hospitals to isolate confirmed positive cases. Therefore, we aim to explore the mental health status of medical staff in the Wuhan Fangcang shelter hospital and discuss the relevant factors that affect the medical staff's mental status. The subjects of the research were staff from several Fangcang shelter hospitals in Wuhan during the epidemic of COVID-19. Patient Health Questionnaire-9 items Scale (PHQ-9) was used to assess th

Editorial: Recommendations of the Assistance Publique des Hopitaux de Paris, AP-HP (Paris Public Hospitals Group) France: The role of medical and non-medical staff in providing information to patients (from the report by Professor Paul Legmann).

The 20 key points of the AP-HP document (Assistance Publique des Hopitaux de Paris) 1) Hospital doctors must provide health care recipients with information in compliance with standards laid down by the medical code of ethics. 2) Radiographers and nursing staff must contribute to the provision of information within the framework of their assigned responsibilities and in compliance with their professional rules. 3) Doctors must draft prescriptions clearly, ensure that the patient and immediate family circle understand them and encourage compliance. 4) Doctors have a duty when examining, treatin

An investigation of the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder, turnover intention and psychological resilience among medical staff in a public hospital in China during the outbreak of the omicron variant in the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the incidence of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), turnover intention and psychological resilience of medical staff during the Outbreak of the Omicron Variant in the COVID-19 pandemic in 2022 and to provide a basis for adopting relevant psychological interventions to reduce medical staff turnover. METHODS: Using the PTSD Checklist-Civilian Version (PCL-C) and a total score ranging from 17 to 85 points, a total score ≥ 38 indicates significant PTSD symptoms and a diagnosis of PTSD. The Chinese version of the Turnover Intention Scale (TIS) has a total score of 6 t

Regrets associated with providing healthcare: qualitative study of experiences of hospital-based physicians and nurses.

BACKGROUND: Regret is an unavoidable corollary of clinical practice. Physicians and nurses perform countless clinical decisions and actions, in a context characterised by time pressure, information overload, complexity and uncertainty. OBJECTIVE: To explore feelings associated with regretted clinical decisions or interventions of hospital-based physicians and nurses and to examine how these regrets are coped with. METHOD: Qualitative study of a volunteer sample of 12 physicians and 13 nurses from Swiss University Hospitals using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis RESULTS: All

Meta-Analysis of Medication Administration Errors in African Hospitals.

The incidence of medication administration errors (MAEs) and associated patient harm continue to plague hospitals worldwide. Moreover, there is a lack of evidence to address this problem, especially in Africa. This research synthesis was intended to provide current evidence to decrease the incidence of MAEs in Africa. Standardized search criteria were used to identify primary studies that reported the incidence and/or predictors of MAEs in Africa. Included studies met specifications and were validated with a quality-appraisal tool. The pooled incidence of MAEs in African hospitals was estimate

[Work-satisfaction and Health of Hospital Nursing and Medical Personnel].

The implementation of new service demands and increasing rationalisation measures exercise stress and pressure on medical and nursing personnel in German hospitals. However, their satisfaction and health are important quality criteria in the ranking of a hospital. Basing on the introduction of a new tool, an inquiry was conducted among the medical and nursing personnel of two hospitals (A and B) in respect of the quality of their working conditions. The scope of the questionnaires covered the nature and kind of the work, opportunities of professional success, management of co-operation and con

Demystifying the influence of hospital characteristics on inpatient mortality rates.

Death, although not the only measure of adverse outcome, has been studied more than any other single occurrence. The authors discuss the findings of these studies and propose a conceptual framework to explain the relation between several hospital characteristics (e.g., profit status, RN ratios) and inpatient mortality rates. These studies raise the issue of whether some hospital characteristics are distal contributors and others, such as RN ratios, are more proximal explanatory variables of the mortality rate. Implications for understanding the relation of nursing's role in the array of potent

Effect of a Multimodal Educational Intervention on Use of Urinary Catheters in Hospitalized Individuals.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Urinary catheters are frequently used in hospital inpatients despite their association with greater morbidity and mortality. Reducing their unnecessary use can improve patient care. The objective of the current study was to determine the effectiveness of a multimodal nursing and physician education intervention to reduce the unnecessary use of urinary catheters in adult inpatients. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental interrupted time series study. SETTING: General internal medicine and surgical services of a large urban teaching hospital. PARTICIPANTS: Admissions to the servic

[Burn out syndrome among critical care workers].

Burnout syndrome (BOS) is a psychological state resulting from prolonged exposure to job stressors. Because intensive care units (ICUs) are characterized by a high level of work-related stress, we reviewed the available literature on BOS among ICU-healthcare workers. Recent studies suggest that severe BOS (measured with the Maslach Burnout Inventory) is present in about half of all critical care physicians and one-third of critical care nurses. Interestingly, the determinants of BOS difer between the two groups of caregivers. Intensivists with severe BOS tend to be those with a large number of
