In response to the emergent public health event of COVID-19, the efficiency of transport of medical waste from hospitals to disposal stations is a worthwhile issue to study. In this paper, based on the actual situation of COVID-19 and environmental impact assessment guidelines, an immune algorithm is used to establish a location model of urban medical waste storage sites. In view of the selection of temporary storage stations and realistic transportation demand, an efficiency-of-transport model of medical waste between hospitals and temporary storage stations is established by using an ant col

INTRODUCTION: Poor clinical waste management and its effect on the environment is an increasingly recognised concern for global healthcare systems. Approximately two thirds of waste produced in healthcare is from the operating theatre. In the Republic of Ireland, an estimated 580,977 tonnes of hazardous waste was produced in 2019. The cost of incineration of this hazardous waste is approximately €2,125 per tonne and €935 per tonne for sterilisation. Pollution from incineration is substantial and harmful.
METHODS: A literature review was performed on the topic of hospital waste management, spe

Biofilms are microbial consortia encased in the extracellular matrix that pose severe threats in healthcare and environmental settings due to their resistance to antimicrobials and their role in persistent infections. These structured communities colonize medical devices (e.g., catheters, implants) and contribute to nosocomial infections. Critically, biofilm-laden medical waste acts as a reservoir for multidrug-resistant pathogens and facilitates horizontal gene transfer, perpetuating antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Improper disposal risks environmental contamination, enabling pathogens to inf

Although healthcare waste management (HCWM) legislations prevail in Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), there appears a prominent gap in standalone pharmaceutical waste management (PWM) legislation making harmonization of PWM challenging in the region. This review is aimed to comprehensively overview the PWM-related legislations in ASEAN, comprising of 10 economically rising countries in Southeast Asia. The relevant regulatory documents, that were promulgated till August 31, 2024 and that were in English or officially translated in English, were extracted from PubMed/Medline, Scopu

This article is a discussion on the non-contact automated characterization framework for infectious healthcare waste by Vielsack et al. (2026). Two critical scientific and operational boundaries are critically analyzed while recognizing their pioneering combination of X-ray transmission (XRT) and machine learning in field conditions. First, single-energy XRT technology limitations hinder fine-grained polymer discrimination; overlapping attenuation profiles cannot differentiate high-value recyclable polymers from problematic polyvinyl chloride (PVC), risking contamination of downstream mechanic

India's already-stressed waste disposal system has been strained by the COVID-19 outbreak. The challenge of managing biomedical Waste (BMW) in India has become more complicated in recent years, mainly due to the sudden emergence of COVID-19. As a methodology, a literature review was carried out with the help of Google Scholar, Research Gate, PubMed, and academic journal databases. Additionally, publications from numerous non-academic sources (such as news websites etc.) and current guidelines, such as those from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India, were also accessed

Plastic pollution is a growing global health threat, with healthcare an underrecognized contributor. Hospitals generate large volumes of single-use plastics from clinical care, pharmaceuticals, and sterile supply chains, accounting for nearly one-quarter of hospital waste. These materials, largely derived from fossil fuels, introduce more than 13,000 chemicals into the environment and frequently degrade into microplastics and nanoplastics that contaminate air, water, soil, and human biological systems. Children are uniquely vulnerable to plastic pollution due to developmental physiology and hi

BACKGROUND: Plastic waste from healthcare is an increasing environmental challenge, particularly in resource-intensive clinical pathways such as dialysis. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) generates large quantities of single-use plastic materials, making its waste stream a priority for sustainable intervention. Conventional disposal through incineration contributes substantially to greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) and produces hazardous ash. Pyrolysis, a chemical recycling process that converts mixed plastic waste into usable outputs, has been proposed as a lower-carbon alternative. This study aimed to

There are over 7.5 billion needles and syringes used outside of the health care system each year by individuals with diabetes, migraines, allergies, infertility, arthritis, HIV, hepatitis, multiple sclerosis, osteoporosis, psoriasis, or other conditions. Disposal of needles, syringes, lancets, and other medical products are not regulated in the home, while these same products used in health care facilities are strictly regulated. Home-generated medical waste is routinely placed into curbside trash, placing sanitation workers and custodial personnel at personal risk of a needle-stick injury. Th

Healthcare services rely on large amounts of disposable medical devices, even though similar reusable devices exist. This retrospective audit of operating theatre and endoscopy procurement data across two hospitals aimed to examine the number and mass of simple single-use devices and cost (purchasing and disposal) of such devices in operating theatres where a reusable device alternative exists. This was assessed at one health service across two hospitals with a total of 19 operating theatres and five endoscopy procedure rooms. The main outcome was the number of single-use devices procured and

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal endoscopy is a major contributor of medical waste and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Sustainable waste management practices could help reduce its environmental footprint.
METHODS: A prospective exploratory study was conducted at IRCCS Humanitas Research Hospital from April to June 2023. The intervention included installing recycling bins for paper and plastic in five endoscopy suites, alongside existing regulated medical waste (RMW) and non-regulated medical waste bins. Comprehensive staff training on waste segregation was provided, and a “Green Endoscopy” nurse

BACKGROUND: Community concerns surrounding syringe waste are a common barrier to syringe services program (SSP) implementation. In Kanawha County, West Virginia, community opposition to SSPs resulted in the closure of needs-based SSPs prior to and during an HIV outbreak among persons who inject drugs (PWID). This qualitative analysis examines views of PWID and community partners on syringe waste and disposal associated with needs-based SSPs.
METHODS: Qualitative interviews with 26 PWID and 45 community partners (medical and social service providers, law enforcement personnel, policymakers, an

INTRODUCTION: Infectious waste handling is a serious problem in healthcare, especially laboratory units. With the increase in research activities, innovative designs are needed that can reduce the risk of contamination and effective solutions are needed for laboratory waste management. Management of infectious solid waste often involves expensive techniques such as incineration, chemical treatment or autoclaving to minimize hazardous substances. Waste left over from laboratory testing activities requires special treatment before disposal. This study aims to test the ability of the waste box eq

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE OF THE STUDY: Hospitals, especially surgical departments, are among the largest producers of waste in Germany. Data on waste management in the operating room (OR) are largely lacking. The aim of this study was to assess and discuss the possibilities of reducing waste and recovering recyclable materials in general surgery against the background of current practice.
METHODOLOGY: Surgical departments throughout Germany were surveyed on waste management. First, the theoretical waste separation possibilities for laparoscopic appendectomy were determined. Subsequently, a si

Medical waste surged during the initial response to COVID-19, greatly increasing the risk of medical waste pollution. Medical waste management involves numerous stakeholders, including environmental, healthcare, agricultural, and laboratory regulatory authorities, organizations generating medical waste, and transportation and disposal companies. The traditional regulatory system suffers from inter-departmental obstacles and opportunistic behavior by stakeholders. All of these issues have drawn widespread attention from the government and the public in the wake of the pandemic. To address these
