MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was filled in by 232 active nurses with secondary education, studying externally at the Medical University in Poznań. The wound that nearly got away: a case presentation.

Chronic cavity wounds are not commonly seen in pediatrics, and little literature is available on their management. A pediatric patient with juvenile dermatomyositis (JDMS) who had a chronic cavity surgical wound with an enterocutaneous fistula presented a nursing challenge. The patient had complex medical and surgical problems that greatly influenced her ability to heal. Nursing management of the wounds had to be innovative and flexible to adapt to these challenges. Factors affecting the patient's wound healing included JDMS; decreased mobility; persistently low serum magnesium, zinc and album

Nursing Skill Mix, Nurse Staffing Level, and Physical Restraint Use in US Hospitals: a Longitudinal Study.

BACKGROUND: Although it is plausible that nurse staffing is associated with use of physical restraints in hospitals, this has not been well established. This may be due to limitations in previous cross-sectional analyses lacking adequate control for unmeasured differences in patient-level variables among nursing units. OBJECTIVE: To conduct a longitudinal study, with units serving as their own control, examining whether nurse staffing relative to a unit's long-term average is associated with restraint use. DESIGN: We analyzed 17 quarters of longitudinal data using mixed logistic regression,

Promoting major pediatric surgical care in a low-income country: a 4-year experience in Eritrea.

BACKGROUND: Access to pediatric surgical care in many sub-Saharan African countries is strongly limited by lack of medical facilities, adequate transport system, and trained medical and nursing manpower. The mortality rate for major congenital abnormalities remains extremely elevated in this area of the world. Strong efforts have been spent during the past decades to elevate the level of pediatric surgery standards in these countries through cooperation programs acting through periodical medical missions or supporting local medical teaching institutions. This is a report of a partnership betwe

METHODS: A sample of operating room nurses and hospitalization nurses were included in the study and participated by filling in a self-report survey containing sociodemographic data items, the validated Nordic and SF12 scales and a list of medical conditions. RESULTS: Three hundred and thirty-one nurses participated in the study. Statistically significant results

Nursing considerations for people with Marfan syndrome.

People with Marfan syndrome present with a range of health problems that require specialised nursing, medical and surgical care. They face many challenges throughout their lives - some of which may be life-threatening - and require continuing support and education from a specialist team. Nurses play a pivotal role in the care of people with Marfan syndrome and their families, encompassing not only medical and surgical interventions, but aspects of lifestyle such as diet, exercise and hobbies, as well as family planning and psychological well-being.

Nurses' Short Peripheral Catheter Flushing Practices: Implications for Patient Care, Nursing Education, and Policy.

Nursing practice and institutional policies regarding short peripheral catheter (SPC) flushing vary. These variations result in a lack of understanding about the factors that influence nurses' SPC flushing practices and leave their effect on outcomes unexplored-information that could potentially enhance nurses' clinical education, institutional policy efforts, and patient care. Using a mixed-methods design, this study examined SPC flushing practices and outcomes among a cohort of medical-surgical nurses and explored their rationale for flushing. Trends were noted in the timing of flushes, and

Nursing workload as a risk factor for healthcare associated infections in ICU: a prospective study.

INTRODUCTION: Nurse understaffing is frequently hypothesized as a potential risk factor for healthcare-associated infections (HAI). This study aimed to evaluate the role of nursing workload in the occurrence of HAI, using Nursing Activities Score (NAS). METHODS: This prospective cohort study enrolled all patients admitted to 3 Medical ICUs and one step-down unit during 3 months (2009). Patients were followed-up until HAI, discharge or death. Information was obtained from direct daily observation of medical and nursing rounds, chart review and monitoring of laboratory system. Nursing workload

Frontline Nurses' clinical judgment in recognizing, understanding, and responding to patient deterioration: A qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Early warning systems and rapid response teams have been widely implemented in hospitals worldwide to facilitate early recognition and response to patient deterioration. Unfortunately, evidence suggests that these interventions have made little impact on unexpected cardiac or respiratory arrest, hospital mortality, unplanned admission to intensive care units, or hospital length of stay. These programs depend on nurses recognizing at risk patients and initiating a timely response. Although physiologic abnormalities commonly precede serious adverse events, nurses often fail to recogn
