Controlling hypertension is essential in cardiovascular diseases. Poor medication adherence is associated with poor disease outcomes, waste of healthcare resources, and contributes to reduced blood pressure control. This study evaluates treatment adherence to antihypertensive therapy in Lebanese hypertensive patients by estimating the proportion of adherent hypertensive patients using a validated tool and investigates what factors predict this behavior. A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was conducted on a random sample of 210 hypertensive outpatients selected from clinics located in

Medication nonadherence is a prevalent public health issue that contributes to significant medical costs and detrimental health outcomes. This is especially true in patients with hypercholesterolemia, a condition affecting millions of American adults and one that is associated with increased risk for coronary and cerebrovascular events. Considering the magnitude of outcomes related to this disease, the medical community has placed significant emphasis on addressing the treatment for high cholesterol, and progress has been made in recent years. However, poor adherence to therapy continues to pl

This literature review explores the range and nature of medication adherence interventions tested with older adults. The unique needs of older adults require specifically designed and tailored interventions. Low medication adherence rates among some elderly contribute to inadequate pharmacological management of illnesses. Searches were conducted to identify randomized controlled trials of medication adherence; computerized databases, journal hand searches, and ancestry searches yielded 63 studies published between 1977 and 2005 where participants' mean age was > 60 years. Interventions were ca

INTRODUCTION: Sustained adherence to disease-modifying therapies is essential for preventing relapses and long-term disability progression in people with relapsing-remitting-multiple sclerosis (PwRRMS). Although psychological distress is associated with poor adherence, the independent contribution of psychological resilience remains unclear. This study aimed to determine whether psychological resilience is independently associated with medication adherence (MA) in PwRRMS who are in remission after accounting for psychological distress, disability level, quality of life (QoL), and clinical fact

Background and Purpose- We assessed ethnic differences in medication adherence 3 months poststroke in a population-based study as an initial step in investigating the increased stroke recurrence risk in Mexican Americans compared with non-Hispanic whites. Methods- Ischemic stroke cases from 2008 to 2015 from the Brain Attack Surveillance in Corpus Christi project in Texas were followed prospectively for 3 months poststroke to assess medication adherence. Medications in 5 drug classes were analyzed: statins, antiplatelets, anticoagulants, antihypertensives, and antidepressants. For each drug cl

An important domain of patient safety is the management of medications in home and community settings by patients and their caregiving network. This study applied human factors/ergonomics theories and methods to data about medication adherence collected from 61 patients with heart failure accompanied by 31 informal caregivers living in the US. Seventy non-adherence events were identified, described, and analysed for performance shaping factors. Half were classified as errors and half as violations. Performance shaping factors included elements of the person or team (e.g. patient limitations),

INTRODUCTION: Potentially preventable hospitalizations (PPHs) for hypertension (HTN) is one indicator of possible failed ambulatory care. Rates of PPHs for HTN have remained fairly level since the late 1980s, which may reflect a lack of understanding of the drivers of these hospitalizations. Anti-HTN medication non-adherence has been studied as a potential risk factor for other cardiovascular disease outcomes but not for PPHs for HTN.
METHODS: A cohort analysis was conducted during 2005-2012 of people with HTN enrolled in commercial and employee health plans with claims in the MarketScan data

OBJECTIVE: Poor medication adherence is a longstanding problem, and is especially pertinent for individuals with chronic conditions or diseases. Adherence to medications can improve patient outcomes and greatly reduce the cost of care. The purpose of the present review is to describe the literature on the use of incentives as applied to the problem of medication adherence.
METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of peer-reviewed empirical evaluations of incentives provided to patients contingent upon medication adherence.
RESULTS: This review suggests that incentive-based medication adhere

BACKGROUND: Lipid lowering drugs are still widely underused, despite compelling evidence about their effectiveness in the treatment and prevention of cardiovascular disease. Poor patient adherence to a medication regimen is a major factor in the lack of success in treating hyperlipidaemia. In this updated review we focus on interventions which encourage patients at risk of heart disease or stroke to take lipid lowering medication regularly.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of interventions aimed at improved adherence to lipid lowering drugs, focusing on measures of adherence and clinical out

BACKGROUND: In 2012, Medicare incorporated medication adherence targeting oral antidiabetic medications, renin-angiotensin system (RAS) antagonists, and statins as highly weighted components in its Star Ratings Program. In the same year, health plans began receiving quality bonus payments for higher star ratings.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to assess how these policy changes affected adherence to targeted and other chronic disease medications in the United States.
METHODS: We performed interrupted time series analyses to assess monthly changes in medication adherence from 2010 to 2016 using health p
