The rapidly increasing global burden of healthcare associated infections (HAI) is resulting in proportionate increase in chemical disinfection in healthcare settings, adding an extra burden of environmental toxicity. Therefore, alternative disinfection techniques with less or no adverse side-effects need to be explored. In this regard, ayurvedic 'dhoopan' technique involving slow combustion of medicinal herbs, minerals and animal products hold great promise. In this study, dhoopan of a traditionally defined ayurvedic medicinal mix, 'Vishaghn Dhoop' (VD) has been assessed for its anti-microbial

A simple, rapid, cost-effective and green analytical method is developed based on ultrasound-assisted dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (US-DLLME) coupled to thin-layer chromatography (TLC)-image analysis for the simultaneous determination of two major alkaloids of Strychnos nux-vomica L i.e., strychnine and brucine. The method is composed of three steps, namely (i) US-DLLME by injecting a mixture of 100-μL chloroform (extraction solvent) and 1-mL methanol (disperser solvent) in 5 mL of aqueous sample, followed by ultrasonication and centrifugation, (ii) TLC of 20 μL of sedimented phase

When a patient has an acute abdominal pain, it is important to identify if the underlying cause is life threatening. To that end, a thorough medical history and relevant investigation will be pivotal. Here we report a case of lead toxicity where the patient presented with an acute abdomen following intake of Ayurvedic medicines. The baseline blood lead level was 82.3 μg/dl. The Ayurvedic medicines when analyzed for its lead content, revealed high lead concentration. We observed that the cessation of Ayurvedic medication along with D-penicillamine therapy was beneficial in reducing the blood le

BACKGROUND: Ayurveda, Indian traditional system of medicine, is practiced commonly in South East Asia and in many parts of the world. Many ayurvedic drugs contain heavy metals and may lead to metal toxicity. Of these, chronic lead poisoning is the most common. Chronic arsenic poisoning following the use of ayurvedic medication, though reported, is rare.
CASE REPORTS: We describe three patients who presented with features of chronic arsenic poisoning following prolonged ayurvedic medication use. The diagnosis of chronic arsenic poisoning was confirmed by high arsenic levels in the blood, urine

This is the first known case of a Coronavirus disease (COVID-19) positive patient treated entirely with Ayurveda. So far in Modern Western Medicine (MWM), no cure has been found which is specific to COVID-19. The only literature relevant to the treatment of Coronavirus disease has surfaced from Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM which was extensively used to control the epidemic in China, also consists of herbal medicines similar to Ayurveda. In this case, the patient, who was familiar with the use of Ayurvedic medicines, fully aware that no proven cure exists in MWM, decided to entirely

BACKGROUND: Breast cancer is one of the major concerns in women globally. Treatment for breast cancer comprises surgery, chemotherapy, hormonal therapy, targeted therapy, and palliative care. Though chemotherapy is an important component of treatment, it induces adverse effects, which are mainly caused by the inability of chemotherapeutic drugs to distinguish between dividing cancer cells and normal cells leading to increase in oxidative stress and hampered immune status.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the benefits of Ayurvedic medicines in breast cancer patients for managing chemotherapy adverse

Scorpion stings are medical emergencies that require immediate attention and are frequently overlooked. Commercial antivenom available only in India is for a single species of venomous scorpion, with significant limitations. Additionally, access to antivenom therapy is limited in rural areas. Examining the ancient Indian traditional medicine, Ayurveda, reveals insights into the underlying mechanisms of scorpion envenomation and potential treatments. Thus, this study examines the Ayurvedic treatment of scorpion stings from a historical and traditional viewpoint and a modern scientific standpoin

Traditional medicine systems around the globe, like Unani, Ayurveda and traditional Chinese medicine, include a number of sugar-based formulations, which contain a large amount of saccharide-containing sweetener, such as honey, sucrose or jaggery. With pervasive lifestyle disorders throughout the world, there have been discussions to consider alternative sweetening agents. Here, from the perspective of Unani medicine, we discuss how the saccharide-based sweeteners may be an essential component of these traditional preparations, like electuaries, which may be deprived of their bioactivities wit
