Artificial night lighting in the Mediterranean: Management priorities and constraints for sea turtle conservation.

Artificial light at night (ALAN) is an escalating anthropogenic threat that disrupts coastal and marine ecosystems worldwide, yet its impacts on Mediterranean sea turtles remain poorly quantified. We surveyed 27 experts across 16 Mediterranean countries to evaluate perceived ALAN effects on sea turtle nesting sites and nearshore habitats, identify research gaps, assess monitoring limitations, and prioritize mitigation strategies. Respondents consistently highlighted hatchlings as the most vulnerable life stage, particularly during sea-finding and early dispersal, with ALAN causing disorientati

Effects of aquaculture waste feeds and antibiotics on marine benthic ecosystems in the Mediterranean Sea.

Intensive aquaculture is an important source of organic waste and antibiotics into the marine environment. Yet, their impacts on benthic marine ecosystems are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the ecological impacts of fish feed waste alone and in combination with three different antibiotics (i.e., oxytetracycline, florfenicol and flumequine) in benthic ecosystems of the Mediterranean Sea by performing a field experiment. We assessed the fate of the antibiotics in the sediment and their accumulation in wild fauna after two weeks of exposure. Moreover, we investigated the impact of the f

Isolation of Leptospira interrogans from a Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) in the Mediterranean Sea.

The pathogenic Leptospira species are very widespread in nature, persisting in the renal tubules of many domestic and wild animal reservoirs. We report the isolation of Leptospira interrogans serovar Pomona in a bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) stranded along the coast of Sardinia, Italy, in 2016.

Sex-specific dynamics of reproductive investment by a Mediterranean hermaphroditic fish in a warming sea.

Sex-specific patterns of reproductive allocation remain poorly documented in wild vertebrate populations under rapidly changing environmental conditions. Here, we quantify variation in reproductive investment in a wild population of a simultaneous hermaphrodite, the painted comber (Serranus scriba). Three successive sampling periods spanned a pronounced and anomalously warm spawning season in the Mediterranean Sea, during which temperatures increased rapidly and coincided with multiple marine heatwave events. Across these periods, gonadosomatic indexes declined markedly in both sexual componen

Storyline of an event of marine litter input and windrow formation in the Northwestern Mediterranean Sea.

High-resolution satellites now enable the detection of submesoscale aggregations of floating litter, known as litter windrows, creating new opportunities for studying marine litter pollution. Here, we combine satellite observations with temporal modeling to examine how rainstorms influence the magnitude and timing of plastic release from land to sea. Windrow detections in the northwestern Mediterranean Sea during spring 2018 were used to adjust a daily-scale model driven by surface runoff and river water discharges. Plastic inputs peaked simultaneously with rainfall and the rising phase of riv

Sponge fauna of the Aegean coast of Trkiye with new records for the eastern Mediterranean Sea.

This study was conducted to determine the taxonomic, ecological and distributional characteristics of sponge species distributed along the Aegean Sea coast of Trkiye. Samples were collected from 36 coastal and 7 offshore stations of different depths (35400 m) and biotopes. Benthic sampling was performed by diving at coastal stations and by bottom-trawling at offshore stations. As a result of the faunistic analysis of the samples, a total of 114 species belonging to 3 classes, 17 orders and 44 families were identified, of which 9 species were new to the eastern Mediterranean, 10 species were ne

Biodegradation of PHBV-based biocomposites in two different marine environments of the Mediterranean Sea.

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues worldwide, with large amounts of conventional plastics accumulating in terrestrial and marine ecosystems due to their persistence and ineffective waste management. Developing and understanding the biodegradation behavior of environmentally friendly alternatives, such as bioplastics, is therefore crucial to mitigate this problem. In this context, the degradation of PHBV-based biocomposites containing purified cellulose (TC), wood flour (WF), and almond shell (AS) fibers have been investigated and compared with neat PHBV

A harmonized individual-level phytoplankton trait dataset from Mediterranean and Black Sea transitional waters.

BACKGROUND: Transitional waters are dynamic coastal ecosystems located at the interface between freshwater and marine environments. They are characterized by pronounced environmental variability resulting from the interaction between geomorphology, freshwater inputs, tidal exchanges, climatic variability, and human activities. These factors generate high habitat heterogeneity and complex ecological dynamics.Phytoplankton communities inhabiting transitional waters are particularly sensitive to both natural gradients and anthropogenic pressures, often exhibiting marked spatial and seasonal patte

Novel dolphin morbillivirus epizootic in stranded striped dolphins in the western Mediterranean Sea, 2025.

Dolphin morbillivirus (DMV) epizootics have recurrently occurred in the western Mediterranean Sea since the first reported outbreak in 1990-1992. In August-November 2025, 5 stranded striped dolphins Stenella coeruleoalba were diagnosed with systemic DMV infection in the Spanish Mediterranean Sea. Dolphins were thin, and 4 of them had typical viral lesions of bronchiolointerstitial pneumonia, lymphoid depletion, and encephalitis. RT-PCR for DMV was positive in at least 2 organs in all dolphins, and viral antigen was detected by immunohistochemistry in 4 dolphins. Four dolphins died due to morbi

Molecular identification of Anisakis spp. from fishes collected in the Tyrrhenian Sea (NW Mediterranean).

The accurate identification of anisakid nematodes at any life cycle stage is important both to deepen the knowledge on their taxonomy, ecology, epidemiology and for diagnosis and control, as larval stages cause a clinical disease in humans known as anisakidosis. With the aim to investigate the presence of anisakid larvae, specimens of horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus (Linnaeus, 1758), silver scabbardfish, Lepidopus caudatus (Euphrasen, 1788), European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus, 1758) and opah fish, Lampris guttatus (Brunnich, 1788), were collected by trawling at depths rangi

Reproductive timing and spawning dynamics of European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena in eastern Mediterranean Sea.

This research investigated the reproductive timing and spawning dynamics of the European barracuda Sphyraena sphyraena in the Thermaikos Gulf, northern Aegean Sea, where the species is predominantly harvested using gillnets. The study was conducted over 2 years, from May to October, coinciding with the period when the local gillnet fishery targets surmullet Mullus surmuletus. The timing of reproduction was examined by the gonado-somatic index, the macroscopic assessment of the ovarian stage, and the microscopic examination of the ovarian developmental stage. All three indices demonstrated that

Microplastics accumulate in all major organs of the mediterranean loggerhead sea turtle (Caretta caretta).

Microplastics (MPs) are a pervasive marine environmental pollutant, posing a serious threat to marine ecosystems and organisms at all trophic levels. Plastic ingestion is well documented in marine turtles, and loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) have been identified as an indicator species to monitor MP pollution globally. Our understanding of the translocation and bioaccumulation potential of MPs beyond the gastrointestinal tract is, however, limited. Here we demonstrate that MP translocation occurs in these marine reptiles and present a comprehensive analysis of MP accumulation in body

Molecular Identification of Hysterothylacium spp. In Fishes From the Southern Mediterranean Sea (Southern Italy).

Samples obtained from 11 teleost fish species collected in waters off of the Mediterranean coasts of Sicily, Italy, were examined for the presence of Hysterothylacium spp. larvae. In total, 3,017 fish samples were examined, and the larvae recovered were used in subsequent phylogenetic studies. Fifty-eight raphidascaridid parasitic nematodes were found in the examined fish, with prevalence values ranging from 0.2% in anchovies to 60% in forkbeard samples. Twenty-seven parasites were identified as Hysterothylacium fabri and Hysterothylacium aduncum by sequencing the following regions: the nuclea

Far away from home: gastrointestinal parasites trace the journey of a grey seal (Halichoerus grypus) from the Wadden Sea to the Mediterranean Sea.

Grey seals, Halichoerus grypus (GSs), inhabit cold temperate and subarctic waters along the North Atlantic Ocean. Individuals of GS can regularly disperse towards southern areas (ca. 38°N-39°N) but occurrence at lower latitudes is exceptional. On 18 February 2022, a 217-cm-long male of GS was detected in waters off the SW Atlantic coast of Spain (37°N), then entered the western Mediterranean Sea and wandered for 15 days until he died. Here, we use gastrointestinal parasites to investigate the geographical origin of the GS and the length of the journey towards Mediterranean waters. Seven helmin

The Caprera Canyon (north-eastern Sardinia): A hotspot of cetacean diversity in the western Mediterranean Sea.

The Caprera Canyon, a submarine canyon system off Sardinia in the western Mediterranean, was thought to be an important cetacean habitat, though studies on the area remained limited. To address this knowledge gap, 216 boat-based surveys were conducted between 2011 and 2019, covering 8443 km, using both research and whale-watching vessels. The distribution, diversity, relative abundance (Encounter Rate - ER), and habitat use of cetaceans were described, along with relevant behavioural and ecological observations. A total of 8 species were reported across 810 sightings, encompassing 7 out of the

Evaluating the Presence of Marine Litter in Cetaceans Stranded in the Balearic Islands (Western Mediterranean Sea).

The global distribution and presence of plastic, at all levels of the water column, has made plastic debris one of today's greatest environmental challenges. The ingestion and entanglement of plastic-containing marine debris has been documented in more than 60% of all cetacean species. In light of the increasing pressure on cetaceans, and the diversity of factors that they face, the aim of this work is to provide evidence of the impact of plastic debris on stranded cetaceans, in terms of ingestion and entanglement, in the Balearic Islands for the first-time. Detailed examinations, necropsies,
