The differences in flavor and quality between Hurood and Chula, two traditional Xilingol cheeses, are primarily due to variations in their production processes. Therefore, how heating and kneading affect their microbial, nonvolatile metabolite, and volatile organic compound (VOC) composition warrants exploration. In this study, shotgun metagenomic sequencing revealed the differential micro-organisms between Hurood and Chula. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem MS identified 47 differential metabolites. Among these, organic acids and their derivatives, benzene and substituted derivat

Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is a major nutritional constraint in acidic orchard soils and can impair both vegetative growth and fruit quality in passion fruits (Passiflora edulis). However, the physiological and molecular mechanisms underlying Mg deficiency responses in passion fruit remain insufficiently understood. This study employed a comprehensive approach, integrating physiological assessments with metabolomic and transcriptomic profiling, to explore the responses to Mg deficiency in the leaves and fruits of purple passion fruit. Our findings revealed that Mg deficiency detrimentally affec

Glycation is a non-enzymatic process involving the reaction of reducing sugars or reactive oxoaldehyde with proteins, lipids or nucleic acids, which results in the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). The presented work discusses the glycation process in people with advanced stage of type 1 or type 2 diabetes. The concentration of different AGEs and their receptors for 58 serum samples was determined by ELISA and by spectrofluorimetric methods. In addition to fluorescent low molecular weight and protein-bound AGEs, we have also marked a new class of AGEs: melibiose-derived glyc

BACKGROUND: Typhoid fever caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Typhi is endemic in developing countries. Its detection by culturing on specific media or serological methods like the Widal test is time consuming and/or less sensitive than the PCR technique. Here we apply a multiplex PCR dependent detection for S. Typhi using two specific primers for invA and fliC genes.
METHODS: 76 patients with clinical suspicion of typhoid fever were examined. Two sets of primers derived from invA and fliC genes specific for Salmonella spp. and S. Typhi were used as multiplex PCR in order to detect the path

A novel solvent-producing, anaerobic clostridium, strain P7(T), was isolated from sediment from an agricultural settling lagoon after enrichment with CO as the substrate. The metabolism of this Gram-positive, motile, spore-forming rod was primarily acetogenic. Acetate, ethanol, butyrate and butanol were the end-products of metabolism. Strain P7(T) grew on CO, H(2)/CO(2), glucose, galactose, fructose, xylose, mannose, cellobiose, trehalose, cellulose, starch, pectin, citrate, glycerol, ethanol, propanol, 2-propanol, butanol, glutamate, aspartate, alanine, histidine, asparagine, serine, betaine,

We found a halophilic vibrio in B bile from a 75-year-old female patient with chronic cholecystitis, and examined its biochemical characteristics. The organisms are gram-negative short rods or comma shaped, with some ring forms. They have a single polar flagellum, but not capsule. The strains can grow in peptone water with 1.0 to 4.0% NaC1, but not with no NaC1 or 6.0% NaC1. The characteristics of the organisms are positive dextrose fermentation, catalase, oxidase, and ornithine decarboxylase, and negative lysine decarboxylase, arginine dihydrolase, and absence of gas from glucose. They are se

Edible and medicinal plants provide a treasure trove of natural phytochemicals for mining the next generation of green food preservatives. Herein, we evaluated antibacterial activities of 55-95% ethanol extracts from the edible rhizome of Rumex madaio (RmEEs). The 75% ethanol extract displayed the strongest antibacterial activity, and its purified fraction 2 (RmEE-F2) blocked the proliferation of common pathogens Staphylococcus aureus and Vibrio cholerae, with minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of 391 μg/mL. RmEE-F2 (1 × MIC) altered the bacterial cell surface biophysical parameters and

In the present study, we have characterized the dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (DLDH) of Strepto-coccus pneumoniae and its role during pneumococcal infection. We have also demonstrated that a lack of DLDH results in a deficiency in alpha-galactoside metabolism and galactose transport. DLDH is an enzyme that is classically involved in the three-step conversion of 2-oxo acids to their respective acyl-CoA derivatives, but DLDH has also been shown to have other functions. The dldh gene was virtually identical in three pneumococcal strains examined. Besides the functional domains and motifs associa

Binding of biotinylated fetuin in a solid-phase assay served as activity assay for purification of calcyclin, the product of a cell growth-related cDNA with homologies to Ca(2+)-binding proteins. Asialofetuin failed to bind to calcyclin, emphasizing the importance of sialic acids. Binding of fetuin was most effectively reduced by N-glycolylneuraminic acid within a panel of mostly negatively charged sugars. Bovine submaxillary mucin and the ganglioside GM1, but not asialo-GM1, proved more effective than neoglycoproteins, carrying negatively charged carbohydrate moieties. Extension of N-acetyl-n

The name Koserella trabulsii is proposed for a group of Enterobacteriaceae formerly called Enteric Group 45. This group consists of 12 strains that were originally identified as atypical Hafnia alvei. K. trabulsii strains were negative for indole production, Voges-Proskauer, H2S production, urea hydrolysis, phenylalanine deaminase, and acid production from glycerol, lactose, sucrose, and D-sorbitol; they were positive for methyl red, citrate (Simmons), lysine and ornithine decarboxylases, arginine dihydrolase (negative in 1 to 2 days and positive in 3 to 7 days), and acid production from cello

BACKGROUND: Cycas bifida is an endemic species distributed in limited areas of Yunnan and Guangxi, with a notably small population size. Under the context of global climate warming, this species may require introduction to colder habitats. Previous studies have confirmed its weak cold tolerance. To thoroughly investigate the molecular and metabolic mechanisms underlying its response to low temperature, this study employed low-temperature stress treatments combined with transcriptome sequencing and metabolomics technologies for systematic comparative analysis.
RESULTS: Through multi-omics anal

A novel anticancer mechanism of catfish (Silurus asotus) egg lectin (SAL) was found to occur via the down-regulation of the membrane transopter protein, MRP1 (multidrug resistance associate protein-1) on Burkitt's lymphoma cells through Gb3(Galα1-4Galβ1-4Glc)-glycosphingolipid. Although SAL did not influence the viability of the cells directly, only 10 and 100 ng/mL of vincristine and etoposide, respectively induced anticancer effects when the lectin was applied in conjunction with these drugs. These phenomena were specifically inhibited by the co-presence of the α-galactoside, melibiose, whic

INTRODUCTION: Escherichia albertii is an emerging food-borne pathogen with zoonotic potential which is often under-reported due to misidentifications.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The current study identified E. albertii from retail fish sold in market which was confirmed by phenotypic (colorless colonies on Xylose-Rhamnose-Melibiose MacConkey Agar), genotypic (dual target uniplex PCR-based detection) and genomic methods (CheckM analysis). In this paper we report the phenotypic characters of the isolate and genomic features such as resistome, virulome and mobilome followed by in silico O and H anti

BACKGROUND: Six independent Gram-negative, facultatively anaerobic, non-spore-forming, nitrogen-fixing rod-shaped isolates were obtained from the root endosphere of rice grown at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and investigated in a polyphasic taxonomic study.
RESULTS: The strains produced fatty acid patterns typical for members of the family Enterobacteriaceae. Comparative sequence analyses of the 16S rRNA as well as rpoB genes allocated the strains to two well-defined groups within the genus Enterobacter, family Enterobacteriaceae. The analyses indicated Enterobacter radici

Recognition of the carbohydrate part of cellular glycoconjugates by sugar receptors like lectins may contribute to biosignaling and interactions between normal and transformed cells. Such recognitions may be essential for establishing phenotypic characteristics in neoplastic cells, including metastasis-associated properties. To evaluate various glycoconjugates in tumor diagnosis and clinical therapy, a panel of 18 biotinylated neoglycoproteins was prepared. This included conjugates of a histochemically inert carrier protein and crucial sugar moieties such as D-glucuronic acid, alpha- and beta-

BACKGROUND: Fragaria nilgerrensis is a wild diploid strawberry species that represents a rich source of genetic variations with potential for enhancing fruit quality traits. However, the transcriptional regulation of changes in fruit quality relevant metabolites during F. nilgerrensis fruit development and ripening has not been investigated. Thus, this study analyzed the changes and accumulation of sugars, organic acids, phenolic acids and flavonoids at the four developmental stages of F. nilgerrensis fruit.
RESULTS: D-sucrose, raffinose, D-trehalose, melibiose and isocitric acid increased as

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), and particularly the unique AGE10 epitope, may be a potential biomarker of immunopathology in rheumatic diseases. They may be associated with inflammation, joint damage and ossification processes. AGE10 present in human and animal tissues could be detected with monoclonal antibody against melibiose-derived glycation product MAGE synthesized in anhydrous conditions. This MAGE product was different from the classic synthesis in water solution. The epitope was determined in serum with ELISA using these anti-MAGE monoclonal antibodies. This work aims to dete
