Electrocortical indices of subjectively perceived confidence in episodic memory.

Electrophysiological studies on recognition memory have identified several brain signals that are associated with subjective perceived confidence. However, the extent these brain signals reflect a generic process and are independent of the type of information recognized remains an open question. To address this issue, twenty-seven healthy volunteers performed an episodic memory task while their electro-encephalogram (EEG) was recorded. Participants encoded a set of abstract pictures, and subsequently rated their confidence on recognition decisions. Similar to results reported in previous studi

Hippocampal functional connectivity and episodic memory in early childhood.

Episodic memory relies on a distributed network of brain regions, with the hippocampus playing a critical and irreplaceable role. Few studies have examined how changes in this network contribute to episodic memory development early in life. The present addressed this gap by examining relations between hippocampal functional connectivity and episodic memory in 4- and 6-year-old children (n=40). Results revealed similar hippocampal functional connectivity between age groups, which included lateral temporal regions, precuneus, and multiple parietal and prefrontal regions, and functional specializ

Noradrenergic mechanisms of arousal's bidirectional effects on episodic memory.

Arousal's selective effects on cognition go beyond the simple enhancement of emotional stimuli, sometimes enhancing and other times impairing processing of proximal neutral information. Past work shows that arousal impairs encoding of subsequent neutral stimuli regardless of their top-down priority via the engagement of β-adrenoreceptors. In contrast, retrograde amnesia induced by emotional arousal can flip to enhancement when preceding neutral items are prioritized in top-down attention. Whether β-adrenoreceptors also contribute to this retrograde memory enhancement of goal-relevant neutral s

Episodic memory decline in Huntington's disease, a binding deficit?

BACKGROUND: Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by episodic memory deterioration. OBJECTIVE: Our paper investigates the cognitive mechanisms that might underlie this decline. To this aim, we tested two executive hypotheses, the binding and the inhibition hypotheses. METHODS: Fifteen HD patients (Mean Cytosine-Adenine-Guanine repeats = 44.93, SD = 2.82), and eighteen controls matched for age, gender and education were assessed with a neuropsychological battery tapping episodic memory and several executive functions, including binding and inhibition. RESULTS: Episodic decline in patien

Acetylcholine facilitates recovery of episodic memory after brain damage.

Episodic memory depends on a network of interconnected brain structures including the inferior temporal cortex, hippocampus, fornix, and mammillary bodies. We have previously shown that a moderate episodic memory impairment in monkeys with transection of the fornix is exacerbated by prior depletion of acetylcholine from inferotemporal cortex, despite the fact that depletion of acetylcholine from inferotemporal cortex on its own has no effect on episodic memory. Here we show that this effect occurs because inferotemporal acetylcholine facilitates recovery of function following structural damage

Sleep-dependency of episodic-like memory consolidation in rats.

Episodic memory refers to the recollection of a representation that binds together into a unique past experience "what" happened, "where" and "when". Sleep has been identified as a state that optimizes the consolidation of newly acquired memory. To determine if sleep is important for the consolidation of episodic-like memory, we tested rats on an episodic-like memory task requiring the binding of an object memory into a spatio-temporal context, as well as retention of its individual components, using separate tests of novel-object recognition ("what"), object-place recognition ("where") and te

Preoperative prediction of verbal episodic memory outcome using FMRI.

This article focuses on an important neurosurgical problem for which functional imaging may have a role. Temporal lobe epilepsy surgery typically involves removal of much of the anterior medial temporal lobe, which is critical for encoding and retrieval of long-term episodic memories. Verbal episodic memory decline after left anterior temporal lobe resection occurs in 30% to 60% of such patients. Recent studies show that preoperative fMRI can predict the degree of verbal memory change that will occur, and that fMRI improves prediction accuracy when combined with other routine tests. The predic

Estrogens, episodic memory, and Alzheimer's disease: a critical update.

Estrogen-containing hormone therapy initiated during late postmenopause does not improve episodic memory (an important early symptom of Alzheimer's disease), and it increases dementia risk. Cognitive consequences of exogenous estrogen exposures during midlife are less certain. Observational evidence implies that use of hormone therapy at a younger age close to the time of menopause may reduce risk of Alzheimer's disease later in life. However, there are concerns that observational findings may be systematically biased. Partial insight on this critical issue may be gleaned from results of ongoi

Episodic memory impairment in Huntington's disease: a meta-analysis.

Memory dysfunction is an important feature in the clinical presentation of Huntington's disease (HD) and may precede the onset of motor symptoms. Although several studies have contributed to the quantitative and qualitative description of memory impairments in HD, the characterization of episodic memory impairments has varied considerably. Whereas most studies report significant impairments on free recall tests, performance on recognition tests has been considerably more variable, ranging from normal to markedly deficient. This absence of a well-established recognition memory deficit has led s

Neural systems underlying episodic memory: insights from animal research.

Two strategies used to uncover neural systems for episodic-like memory in animals are discussed: (i) an attribute of episodic memory (what? when? where?) is examined in order to reveal the neuronal interactions supporting that component of memory; and (ii) the connections of a structure thought to be central to episodic memory in humans are studied at a level of detail not feasible in humans. By focusing on spatial memory (where?) and the hippocampus, it has proved possible to bring the strategies together. A review of lesion, disconnection and immediate early-gene studies in animals reveals t

Episodic memory, amnesia, and the hippocampal-anterior thalamic axis.

By utilizing new information from both clinical and experimental (lesion, electrophysiological, and gene-activation) studies with animals, the anatomy underlying anterograde amnesia has been reformulated. The distinction between temporal lobe and diencephalic amnesia is of limited value in that a common feature of anterograde amnesia is damage to part of an "extended hippocampal system" comprising the hippocampus, the fornix, the mamillary bodies, and the anterior thalamic nuclei. This view, which can be traced back to Delay and Brion (1969), differs from other recent models in placing critica

Integrated memory for objects, places, and temporal order: evidence for episodic-like memory in mice.

Human episodic memory refers to the recollection of an unique past experience in terms of what happened, and where and when it happened. Factoring out the issue of conscious recollection, episodic memory, even at the behavioral level, has been difficult to demonstrate in non-human mammals. Although, it was previously shown that rodents can associate what and when or what and where information given on unique trials, it proved to be difficult to demonstrate memory for what, where, and when simultaneously in mammals, without using extensive training procedures, which might induce semantic rather

Object recognition ability predicts episodic location memory, enhanced by meaningfulness.

People differ in their ability to distinguish visually similar items, a domain-general ability known as o Richler (Psychological Review 126:226-251, 2019). While o typically involves extracting invariant object properties, we investigated whether it also relates to long-term memory for episodic information extrinsic to object identity, specifically, object location. We further examined whether this relationship is influenced by stimulus meaningfulness, a factor known to enhance long-term memory, by using both high- and low-meaning stimuli. Participants completed a location memory test, a serie

Understanding episodic memory in schizophrenia: a functional neuroimaging meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In schizophrenia, episodic memory deficits are observed across verbal and visual memory tasks, as well as during free recall and recognition. Functional neuroimaging studies have revealed abnormalities in several brain regions, though findings have often been inconsistent. To resolve these discrepancies, we conducted a meta-analysis to provide an updated understanding of the neural mechanisms involved in episodic memory deficits in schizophrenia. METHODS: The meta-analysis included 59 functional neuroimaging studies using episodic memory tasks in schizophrenia. RESULTS: The analy

Medial Temporal Lobe Damage Impairs Temporal Integration in Episodic Memory.

Although the role of the medial temporal lobe (MTL) and the hippocampus in episodic memory is well established, there is emerging evidence that these regions play a broader role in cognition, specifically in temporal processing. However, despite strong evidence that the hippocampus plays a critical role in sequential processing, the involvement of the MTL in timing per se is poorly understood. In the present study, we investigated whether patients with MTL damage exhibit differential performance on a temporal distance memory task. Critically, we manipulated context shifts, or boundaries, which

Typicality in the brain during semantic and episodic memory decisions.

Concept typicality is a key semantic dimension supporting the categorical organization of items based on their features, such that typical items share more features with other members of their category than atypical items, which are more distinctive. Typicality effects manifest in better accuracy and faster response times during categorization tasks, but higher performance for atypical items in episodic memory tasks, due to their distinctiveness. At a neural level, typicality has been linked to the anterior temporal lobe (ATL) and the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) in semantic decision tasks, bu

Intersubject similarity in neural representations underlies shared episodic memory content.

Individuals generally form their unique memories from shared experiences, yet the neural representational mechanisms underlying this subjectiveness of memory are poorly understood. The current study addressed this important question from the cross-subject neural representational perspective, leveraging a large functional magnetic resonance imaging dataset (n = 415) of a face-name associative memory task. We found that individuals' memory abilities were predicted by their synchronization to the group-averaged, canonical trial-by-trial activation level and, to a lesser degree, by their similarit

Assessing episodic memory in rodents using spontaneous object recognition tasks.

Models of episodic memory are successfully established using spontaneous object recognition tasks in rodents. In this review, we present behavioral techniques devised to investigate this type of memory, emphasizing methods based on associations of places and temporal order of items explored by rats and mice. We also provide a review on the areas and circuitry of the medial temporal lobe underlying episodic-like memory, considering that a large number of neurobiology data derived from these protocols. Although spontaneous recognition tasks are commonplace in this field, there is need for carefu

Semantic and episodic memory in adults with temporal lobe epilepsy.

The primary aims were to (1) identify the factor structure of tests thought to measure semantic and episodic memory and (2) examine whether patterns of impairment would show a double dissociation between these two memory systems at an individual level in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). The secondary aim was to explore the impact of epilepsy-related variables on performance. This retrospective study involved a cohort of 54 adults who had been diagnosed with TLE and had undergone a neuropsychological assessment that included four memory tests traditionally used to measure either sema
