LSTM (Long Short-Term Memory Network) is currently extensively utilized for forecasting financial time series, primarily due to its distinct advantages in separating the long-term from the short-term memory information within a sequence. However, the experimental results presented in this paper indicate that LSTM may struggle to clearly differentiate between these two types of information. To overcome this limitation, we propose the ARMA-RNN-LSTM Hybrid Model, aimed at enhancing the separation between the long-term and short-term memory information on top of LSTM framework. The experiment in t

Cells experience time-varying mechanical cues when navigating complex microenvironments, yet whether and how they retain a short-term memory of recent deformations remains unclear. Here, we show that glioblastoma cells encode such memory through transient cytoskeletal anisotropy. Combining magneto-mechanical actuation, nanoindentation, and selective cytoskeletal perturbations, we find that actin architectures drive opposite mechanical responses: stress fibers stiffen cells under stretch, whereas the actin cortex governs softening under compression. Vimentin intermediate filaments stabilize act

OBJECTIVE: The entorhinal cortex (EC) is the first cortical region affected by tau pathology in Alzheimer's disease (AD), but its functions remain unclear. The EC is thought to support memory binding, which can be tested using the Visual Short-Term Memory Binding Test (VSTMBT). We aimed to test whether VSTMBT performance can identify individuals with preclinical AD before noticeable episodic memory impairment and whether these performances are related to amyloid (Aβ) pathology and/or EC tau burden.
METHODS: Ninety-four participants underwent the VSTMBT (including a shape-only condition (SOC)

Drawing upon the well-documented impact of long-term heart rate variability biofeedback (HRVB) on psychophysiological responses, this study seeks to explore the short-term effects arising from a single HRVB session during and after paced breathing exercise. The research aligns with the neurovisceral integration model, emphasizing the link between heart rate variability (HRV) levels and cognitive performance. Therefore, a randomized controlled trial employing a between-subjects design was conducted with 38 participants. Each participant was assigned to either the paced breathing intervention gr

OBJECTIVE: Deficits in concentration, specific developmental disorders, and behaviour problems often impair the educational abilities of children and adolescents with epilepsy, even if the subjects are seizure-free. The impact of subclinical epileptiform discharges that persist despite adequate antiepileptic treatment is not yet understood. Some studies suggest that these lead to simultaneous transitory cognitive impairment, thereby affecting short-term memory functions. This study examines the impact of subclinical discharges on memory functions.
METHOD: 40 seizure-free children (10.3 +/- 3.

Event Related Potentials (ERPs) from thirty children (9-13 years old); fourteen of whom were dyslexic and sixteen normal-reading controls, were recorded during the performance of a memory scanning task. Visually presented stimuli consisted of either digits (lexical) or unfamiliar (non-lexical) characters. The subjects had to indicate whether a probe stimulus was a member of a preceding memorized set, or not. The memorized sets included 1, 2 or 3 items. Performance accuracies were significantly lower and reaction times longer in the dyslexic group. The significant Group x Lexicality interaction

Deficiency of the epigenome modulator histone deacetylase 3 (HDAC3) in brown adipose tissue (BAT) impairs the ability of mice to survive in near-freezing temperatures. Here, we report that short-term exposure to mild cold temperature (STEMCT: 15°C for 24 h) averted lethal hypothermia of mice lacking HDAC3 in BAT (HDAC3 BAT KO) exposed to 4°C. STEMCT restored the induction of the thermogenic coactivator PGC-1α along with UCP1 at 22°C, which is greatly impaired in HDAC3-deficient BAT, and deletion of either UCP1 or PGC-1α prevented the protective effect of STEMCT. Remarkably, this protection las

Air pollution poses a major environmental health risk, leading to approximately 6.7 million premature deaths annually. Key pollutants like PM2.5, carbon monoxide (CO), sulfur dioxide (SO2), and ozone (O3) significantly affect air quality. This study utilizes a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) deep neural network algorithm to predict air pollution levels, focusing on PM2.5 concentrations in Nairobi. Sensor data from GeoHealth Hub was split into training, validation, and testing datasets. The LSTM model, optimized with the Adam algorithm and evaluated using Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), demonstra

Learning of adaptive behaviors requires the refinement of coordinated activity across multiple brain regions. However, how neural communications develop during learning remains poorly understood. Here, using two-photon calcium imaging, we simultaneously recorded the activity of layer 2/3 excitatory neurons in eight regions of the mouse dorsal cortex during learning of a delayed-response task. Across learning, while global functional connectivity became sparser, there emerged a subnetwork comprising of neurons in the anterior lateral motor cortex (ALM) and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). Buffer accounts of verbal short-term memory (STM) assume dedicated buffers for maintaining different types of information (e.g., phonological, visual) whereas embedded processes accounts argue against the existence of buffers and claim that STM consists of the activated portion of long-term memory (LTM). We addressed this debate by determining whether STM recruits the same neural substrate as LTM, or whether additional regions are involved in short-term storage. Using fMRI with representational similarity analysis (RSA), we examined the representational correspondence of multi-voxel neural act

We examined short-term memory activation processes and task-relevant, task-irrelevant, and dynamic inhibitory processes in a group of young adults with hypoxic-ischaemic prenatal spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (HI-CP, N=27) with group-level and person-oriented methods of data analysis. Performance was compared with age, sex, and education of a matched control group (N=135). We found that HI-CP is accompanied with low level of correct answers and high levels of task-relevant and task-irrelevant intrusions and repetitions on the Memory with Pause and Homogeneous Interference short-term memory t

The present study investigated the relationship between verbal short-term memory and motor speech processes in healthy control subjects and five patients suffering from Broca's aphasia. Control subjects showed a phonological similarity effect, a word length effect and an articulatory suppression effect, supporting the hypothesis of a phonological store and an articulatory loop component of short-term memory. A similar effect of phonological similarity was observed in the aphasic patients, while the effects of word length and articulatory suppression were reduced. In control subjects, measures

PURPOSE: This article describes DigiSpan, a new computer-controlled auditory test of forward and reverse digit span, designed to be administered by clinicians, and presents normative and test-retest reliability data for adults.
METHOD: DigiSpan mimics conventional live-voice tests in that it commences with trials that ascend in length until a stopping criterion is met, giving rise to a conventional scaled score. It then administers five additional adaptive trials, the length of which depends on the correctness of the response to the previous trial. Each of these two segments of the measuremen

Dyslexia, a specific difficulty in acquiring proficient reading, is also characterized by reduced short-term memory (STM) capacity. Extensive research indicates that individuals with developmental dyslexia (IDDs) benefit less from exposure, and this hampers their long-term knowledge accumulation. It is well established that long-term knowledge has a great effect on performance in STM tasks, and thus IDDs' reduced benefit of exposure could potentially reduce their relative performance in such tasks, especially when frequent items, such as digit-words, are used. In this study we used a standard,

BACKGROUND: High-altitude environments (> 2500 m) with low oxygen, low pressure, variable climate, large diurnal temperature differences, and high solar and ultraviolet radiation are risky to human health. Mice’s intestinal microbiota changes at high altitude may affect cognition via the gut–brain axis. Short-term high-altitude exposure may have positive effects on organisms. This study explores if short-term high-altitude exposure can protect working memory from restraint stress (RS) and the role of intestinal microbiota in this process. METHODS: Forty-eight C57BL/6 mice aged eight weeks were

A number of recent studies have indicated that the medial temporal lobe (MTL) plays a critical role in working memory (WM) and perception, but these results have been highly controversial given the traditional association of MTL with long-term memory. We review the research and highlight important factors that need to be considered in determining the role of MTL in WM including set-size of used stimuli and feature complexity and/or feature conjunctions/bindings embedded in those stimuli. These factors relate to hierarchical and, accordingly, domain-specific theories of functional organization
