Autobiographical memory specificity and emotional disorder.

The authors review research showing that when recalling autobiographical events, many emotionally disturbed patients summarize categories of events rather than retrieving a single episode. The mechanisms underlying such overgeneral memory are examined, with a focus on M. A. Conway and C. W. Pleydell-Pearce's (2000) hierarchical search model of personal event retrieval. An elaboration of this model is proposed to account for overgeneral memory, focusing on how memory search can be affected by (a) capture and rumination processes, when mnemonic information used in retrieval activates ruminative

[Memory disorders in lesions of the thalamus in man].

Isolated memory disorders occur after bilateral involvement of thalamus. Anterograde amnesia is not complete; retrograde amnesia is always severe. Four groups of thalamic nuclei may be affected: anterior nuclei; midline nuclei, medialis dorsalis nuclei; intralaminar nuclei. A pathophysiologic interpretation is proposed. Three kinds of memory processes may be involved: consolidating process that leads to the formation of memory traces (anterior nuclei, midline nuclei); retrieving process that leads to the activation of memory traces (intralaminar nuclei); temporal organizing process that regard

Spatial working memory across psychiatric disorders in young adults.

OBJECTIVE: Impairments in spatial working memory (SWM) have been observed in several disparate psychiatric conditions. The present study investigated how SWM varied across a range of psychiatric disorders in a large sample of young adults using the SWM test from the Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery. METHODS: A sample of 575 participants aged 18-29 years was enrolled from the general community and evaluated for psychiatric disorders using several screening evaluations. Performance on the SWM test was assessed, with outcome measures of strategy and total errors. Using Z-score

Impaired allocentric spatial memory in patients with affective disorders.

BACKGROUND: Memory disturbances are frequent in unipolar depression (UD) and bipolar disorder (BD) and may comprise important predisposing and maintaining factors. Previous studies have demonstrated hippocampal abnormalities in UD and BD but there is a lack of studies specifically assessing hippocampus-dependent memory. METHODS: We used a virtual task to assess hippocampus-dependent (allocentric) vs non-hipppocampal (egocentric) spatial memory in remitted and partially remitted patients with UD or BD (N = 22) and a healthy control group (N = 32). Participants also completed a range of standar

Prospective memory impairment in neurological disorders: implications and management.

Prospective memory is a core neurocognitive ability that refers to memory for future intentions, such as remembering to take medications and to switch off appliances. Any breakdown in prospective memory, therefore, has serious implications for the ability to function independently in everyday life. In many neurological disorders, including Parkinson disease and dementia, prospective memory deficits are common even in the earliest stages and typically become more severe with disease progression. Consequently, clinical assessment of prospective memory is of critical importance. This article prov

Deep brain stimulation for disorders of memory and cognition.

The next several decades will see an exponential rise in the number of patients with disorders of memory and cognition, and of Alzheimer's disease in particular. Impending demographic shifts, an absence of effective treatments, and the significant burden these conditions place on patients, caregivers, and society, mean there is an urgent need to develop novel therapies. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is a neurosurgical procedure that is a standard-of-care for many patients with treatment-refractory Parkinson's disease, dystonia, and essential tremor. DBS has proven to be an effective means of mo

Practitioner review: verbal working memory development and its disorders.

Working memory refers to the systems responsible for the temporary storage and manipulation of information during the performance of cognitive tasks. There is a good deal of evidence that verbal short-term memory functions as a working memory system. We review advances in our understanding of the nature and limitations of verbal short-term memory and the reasons for its development with age, and go on to consider the common association between impairments of verbal short-term memory and other impairments of cognitive development. We conclude by considering the relationship between short-term m

[Psychiatric disorders in patients of a memory outpatient clinic].

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether psychiatric conditions other than depression are relevant in elder patients with memory disturbances. METHODS: 430 consecutive outpatients (242 males, 188 females; mean age 61.7 years) who visited the Maastricht Memory Clinic were examined, according to a standardised diagnostic procedure, including somatic, neurological, psychiatric and neuropsychological examination. Psychiatric disorders were diagnosed according to DSM-III(-R) criteria. RESULTS: Of 152 patients with dementia, 34 had a secondary depressive syndrome, 19 another secondary psychiatric disorder.

False memory in posttraumatic stress disorder and borderline personality disorder.

Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder (BPD) have been associated with an increased generation of false memories. We aimed to disentangle disorder-specific false memory in individuals with PTSD and BPD using the Deese-Roediger-McDermott (DRM) paradigm. It measures the tendency to mistakenly remember stimuli that are associated with actually presented material, but have not been presented. Participants with BPD without comorbid PTSD (n = 32), participants with PTSD without comorbid BPD (n = 28), and mentally healthy controls (HC, n = 30) were given a word reco

Reliving and disorganization in posttraumatic stress disorder and panic disorder memories.

Intense, disorganized recollections are one of the core symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and considered to be the result of inadequate processing of trauma information. A first panic attack resembles trauma in being an unexpected frightening and subjectively life-threatening event, and like PTSD, panic disorder with agoraphobia also involves fear conditioning after the first event. Therefore, a panic attack may be processed similarly to a trauma, and as a result, memories of a panic attack may share characteristics like reliving and disorganization with PTSD trauma memories. T

Cholinergic Deep Brain Stimulation for Memory and Cognitive Disorders.

Memory and cognitive impairment as sequelae of neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease and age-related dementia are major health issues with increasing social and economic burden. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) has emerged as a potential treatment to slow or halt progression of the disease state. The selection of stimulation target is critical, and structures that have been targeted for memory and cognitive enhancement include the Papez circuit, structures projecting to the frontal lobe such as the ventral internal capsule, and the cholinergic forebrain. Recent human clinical and animal model r

A compensatory role for declarative memory in neurodevelopmental disorders.

Most research on neurodevelopmental disorders has focused on their abnormalities. However, what remains intact may also be important. Increasing evidence suggests that declarative memory, a critical learning and memory system in the brain, remains largely functional in a number of neurodevelopmental disorders. Because declarative memory remains functional in these disorders, and because it can learn and retain numerous types of information, functions, and tasks, this system should be able to play compensatory roles for multiple types of impairments across the disorders. Here, we examine this h

Working memory dysfunction in delusional disorders: an fMRI investigation.

BACKGROUND: Delusional disorder (DD) is a rare and understudied psychiatric disorder. There is limited number of studies concerning cognitive characteristics in DD. Using an established working memory paradigm with variable levels of memory load, we investigated alterations in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) of brain regions in patients with DD. METHODS: This case control study included 9 patients with DD and 9 healthy control subjects matched for age, sex, and education level. Diagnosis of DD was confirmed using the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis I. The severity o

Sleep-dependent memory consolidation in patients with sleep disorders.

Sleep can improve the off-line memory consolidation of new items of declarative and non-declarative information in healthy subjects, whereas acute sleep loss, as well as sleep restriction and fragmentation, impair consolidation. This suggests that, by modifying the amount and/or architecture of sleep, chronic sleep disorders may also lead to a lower gain in off-line consolidation, which in turn may be responsible for the varying levels of impaired performance at memory tasks usually observed in sleep-disordered patients. The experimental studies conducted to date have shown specific impairment

Working memory deficits in children with specific learning disorders.

This article examines working memory functioning in children with specific developmental disorders of scholastic skills as defined by ICD-10. Ninety-seven second to fourth graders with a minimum IQ of 80 are compared using a 2 x 2 factorial (dyscalculia vs. no dyscalculia; dyslexia vs. no dyslexia) design. An extensive test battery assesses the three subcomponents of working memory described by Baddeley (1986): phonological loop, visual-spatial sketchpad, and central executive. Children with dyscalculia show deficits in visual-spatial memory; children with dyslexia show deficits in phonologica

[Verbal memory disorders provoked by a variety of stokes].

In recent years a consensus has been reached about the neuroanatomical substrate of verbal memory, but this state of knowledge has not yet been implemented in clinical practice. One reason for this may be that most of the neuroscientific studies on verbal memory used different neuropsychological instruments and that only a small set of patient groups with the same etiology but different lesion sites were analysed. Returning to three earlier studies, we analyse the possibility to make differential judgements on the verbal memory impairments of four different patient groups by using the Californ

[Memory disorders in the elderly: complementary examinations--for whom?].

Recognizing the existence of memory disorders in elderly subjects necessarily involves developing a diagnostic strategy to identify the causes. Three types of complementary investigation are available: neurophysiological and neurobiological tests, and anatomical and functional brain imaging studies. Major efforts have been made to identify diagnostic markers on the electroencephalogram. Quantified EEG may have a certain value. However, it provides a plethora of data and there is no consensus on which items are most relevant on the EEG, whether the patient is awake or asleep. Evoked 'cognitive'

Episodic memory and consciousness in antisocial personality disorder and conduct disorder.

Episodic memory is one of the most significant sources of information of humans. It entails cooperative and linguistic skills and, as Mahr & Csibra (M&C) note, the capacity to ground veridical beliefs about the past. In some psychiatric disorders (antisocial personality disorder and conduct disorder), it was found that the habit of lying is associated with episodic memory and consciousness deficits.

The role of CART peptide in learning and memory: A potential therapeutic target in memory-related disorders.

Cocaine and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) mRNA and peptide are vastly expressed in both cortical and subcortical brain areas and are involved in critical cognitive functions. CART peptide (CARTp), described in reward-related brain structures, regulates drug-induced learning and memory, and its role appears specific to psychostimulants. However, many other drugs of abuse, such as alcohol, opiates, nicotine, and caffeine, have been shown to alter the expression levels of CART mRNA and peptides in brain structures directly or indirectly associated with learning and memory processes. Sensory-specific and fractional disorders of recent memory in man. II. Unilateral loss of tactile recent memory.

Three patients were found to have unilateral tactile recent memory loss on examination. In two patients the loss occurred in the right hand and was accompanied by a disorder of verbal recent memory; in the third patient the loss occurred in the left hand and was not accompanied by any other disturbance in recent memory. An acute unilateral lesion, either structural or functional, in the medial temporal lobe contralateral to the tactile recent memory disturbance was the common denominator in all three cases. The proper methods for diagnosing a unilateral tactile disturbance of recent memory and
