Cerebral angiofibroma: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Intracranial fibromatous tumors are very rare lesions, with few reported cases. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 34-year-old male patient who experienced seizures resulting from a cystic lesion in the left occipital region, which remained unchanged for 11 years. After the seizures increased in number, magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large cyst with a tumor nodule. INTERVENTION: A left occipital craniotomy was performed, and the tumor was removed. Pathological studies, including immunohistochemical and ultrastructural analyses, indicated that this

Extracranial metastasizing solitary fibrous tumors (SFT) of meninges: histopathological features of a case with long-term follow-up.

Extrapleural solitary fibrous tumors are uncommon mesenchymal neoplasms frequently observed in middle-aged adults and are classified, according to the WHO classification of soft tissue tumors, as part of the hemangiopericytoma tumor group. However, these two entities remain separated in the WHO classification of tumors of the central nervous system. In fact, meningeal solitary fibrous tumors are believed to be benign lesion and only in a minority of cases local relapses have been described, although detailed survival clinical studies on solitary fibrous tumors of meninges are rare. In contrast

Solitary fibrous tumours of the meninges: case series and literature review.

We report four new cases of meningeal Solitary Fibrous Tumour (SFT). Two patients presented with raised intracranial pressure from posterior fossa SFT, and the third developed hemiparesis and dysphasia due to a large lesion that originated in the left middle cranial fossa. These were successfully excised and the patients remain well at follow-up of between 1 and 3 years. The fourth patient, a 71-year-old man, suffered an intracerebral haemorrhage and later died from a malignant SFT that had invaded the falx cerebri, superior sagittal sinus, and brain. This is the first description of a locally

Intracranial meningeal tumours in childhood: a clinicopathologic study including MIB-1 immunohistochemistry.

Primary tumours of the meninges with a relatively high tendency for malignant behaviour are uncommon in childhood. This study concerns 18 cases of meningeal tumours in children under the age of 16, of which 13 were meningiomas and five were other tumours arising in the meninges. Meningiomas showed a preponderance in females as in adult series, and the majority were supratentorial in localisation. The percentage of meningeal tumours and meningiomas among all brain tumours in our centre were 3.72% and 2.69%, respectively. Four out of 13 meningiomas were fibroblastic, four were transitional, one

Brain infections in human immunodeficiency virus positive patients.

This review discusses the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of direct human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) brain infection as well as other common opportunistic infections and neoplasms in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) population. MRI utilizing T2-weighted images is an ideal method for screening. Gadolinium (Gd) should be administered to further characterize positive or questionable studies or when meningeal disease is suspected.

Primary cerebral lymphoma manifested by dementia.

Primary cerebral lymphoma (PCL) accounts for less than 1% of intracranial neoplasms. In immunocompromised patients, multicentric lymphoma of the brain is typically manifested by focal neurologic deficits. In the immunocompetent individual, PCL involves leptomeninges and presents meningeal signs. Leptomeningeal lymphoma manifested by dementia has not been previously reported and should be included in the differential diagnosis of patients with Alzheimer's disease.

[Malignant melanoma of the meninges--MR and CT diagnosis].

Malignant melanoma of the meninges is a rare neoplasm derived from melanocytes of the cranial or spinal meninges. Histologically classified as grade IV tumours, malignant melanoma may present either as a diffuse meningeal neoplasm, first described by Virchow in 1859, or as a circumscribed tumour attached to the meninges. Although diagnosis is rarely established prior to surgery or autopsy, MR and CT may provide indispensable information probably leading to earlier diagnosis. In 4 patients, diagnosis of a primary meningeal melanoma was based on MR and CT findings and histology. Histology was ob

Primary leptomeningeal sarcomatosis. Clinicopathological report of six cases.

6 autopsy cases of primary leptomeningeal sarcomatosis are presented as a distinct nosological entity with a variable clinical picture and morphology in 5 males and 1 female. The clinical course from onset of symptoms till death ran for only a few weeks in most cases. 2 infants showed brain tumor symptoms and signs. 2 patients of advanced age presented a polyradiculoneuritic syndrome and 2 young adults had spinal cord compression symptoms and a mixed clinical form. In almost all cases, clinical symptoms and signs were for most of the course confined to one part of the neuraxis. The CSF was dis

Long-term mortality in patients diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis: a Danish nationwide cohort study.

The objective of the study was to determine the long-term mortality and the causes of death in patients diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis. The authors performed a nationwide, population-based cohort study including all Danish patients diagnosed with pneumococcal meningitis from 1977 through 2006 and alive 1 year after diagnosis. Data were retrieved from medical databases in Denmark. The absolute and relative risks of all-cause and cause-specific death were analyzed by using Kaplan-Meier survival curves, Poisson regression analysis, Cox regression analysis, and cumulative incidence functio

Neoplastic meningitis as the presentation of occult primitive neuroectodermal tumors.

Seven children and young adults initially presented with subacute meningitis and/or increased intracranial pressure. The diagnosis of neoplastic meningitis secondary to a primitive neuroectodermal neoplasm was delayed by the absence of an obvious primary tumor. The neuroradiologic appearance was that of a basimeningeal infiltrative process, complicated by communicating hydrocephalus or "pseudotumor cerebri." Myelography was important in the diagnosis of disseminated meningeal malignancy in four cases. Cerebrospinal fluid cytologic diagnosis was insensitive but ultimately confirmed in five case

New Software for Preoperative Diagnostics of Meningeal Tumor Histologic Types.

OBJECTIVE: Meningeal tumors are neoplasms with different histologic manifestations of both benign and malignant types that determine the prognosis of tumor recurrence and its consistency. The risk of surgical treatment depends on the location, size, and consistency of the tumor. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) sequences can be used to identify the features of tumors, but these MRI characteristics are not well understood. The present study describes an advanced mathematical algorithm to analyze MRI data and distinguish histologic types of meningeal tumors before surgery. METHODS: Forty-eight

The immunophenotypic spectrum of meningeal hemangiopericytoma: a comparison with fibrous meningioma and solitary fibrous tumor of meninges.

Despite controversy regarding its histogenesis, meningeal hemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a well-defined clinicopathologic entity exhibiting high rates of recurrence and late extracranial metastasis. It must be distinguished from several benign neoplasms, particularly fibrous meningioma (FM) and solitary fibrous tumor (SFT). To determine the immunoprofile of HPC, we studied 27 meningeal examples, including 13 low-grade and 14 high-grade tumors. For comparison, 20 FMs and eight SFTs of the meninges were also evaluated. The immunotype of HPC included vimentin (85%), factor XIIIa (78%) in individual

Rostral cranial fossa and sinonasal neoplasms with cribriform plate involvement in 32 dogs and 17 cats.

The rostral cranial fossa (RCF) consists of the sphenoid and ethmoid bones, which accommodate the olfactory bulbs and nerves along the recesses of the cribriform plate. Neoplasms located in the vicinities of the RCF can compress and/or invade the cribriform plate. Here we describe the clinical and pathologic findings of neoplasms involving the cribriform plate in 32 dogs and 17 cats autopsied over a 13-y period. The average ages of affected dogs and cats were 9.2 y and 9.7 y, respectively. No sex or breed predisposition was evident in dogs, but 13 of 18 cats were spayed females and 14 of 18 we

Haemangiopericytoma presenting with acute intracerebral haemorrhage.

Clinical presentation of brain tumour by acute haemorrhage is well known and occurs in around 5% of the cases. Haemangiopericytoma (HPC) is a richly vascularized tumour, but its clinical manifestation is most frequently related to tumour mass effect or seizures. We present the eighth case reported of a patient with acute intracerebral bleeding caused by HPC. Though HPC represents only about 2% of intracranial meningeal neoplasms it must be included in the differential diagnosis of intracranial haemorrhage.

Dural-Based Frontal Lobe Hemangioblastoma.

BACKGROUND: Hemangioblastomas are benign vascular neoplasms that may be associated with von Hippel-Lindau disease. They are more common in men, with a mean age of 36 years, and rarely affect the supratentorial region and, when present in this topography, do not have meningeal impairment. Diagnosis by the radiologic and histopathologic study is difficult, since they are rare and, therefore, forgotten diagnosis, besides they are differential diagnoses with other supratentorial neoplasms. CASE DESCRIPTION: The present report describes a case of a frontal hemangioblastoma in a 64-year-old woman w

Allelic losses at 1p, 9q, 10q, 14q, and 22q in the progression of aggressive meningiomas and undifferentiated meningeal sarcomas.

Meningiomas are usually benign tumors; however, they can recur after surgical resection and occasionally show histological progression to a higher malignancy grade. Five such rare cases of aggressively recurring meningiomas were present in our departmental cohort of 923 primary meningeal neoplasms operated over a 17-year period. Four other aggressively recurring meningeal tumors with a very similar clinical and histomorphological appearance (three undifferentiated meningeal sarcomas, one hemangiopericytoma) was also included in this study. We investigated whether disease progression can be tra

Neuroradiologic findings in leptomeningeal carcinomatosis: the value interest of gadolinium-enhanced MRI.

Four patients with leptomeningeal metastases documented by neuroradiological examinations are reported. All had central nervous system or systemic neoplasms and showed clinical signs of carcinomatous meningitis. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI (Gd-MRI) disclosed for each patient pathological foci, allowing delineation of the extent of meningeal disease. Although non-specific, these findings, combined with the clinical context and CSF analysis, may lead to a rapid diagnosis and treatment of carcinomatous meningitis, even when malignant cells are not detected in the cerebrospinal fluid.

Radiation-induced tumours of meninges. Report on eight cases and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Despite their rarity, post-radiation meningeal tumours seem to be a growing problem due to the increasing application of radiation therapy. The aim of the study was to ascertain the specific features of these tumours. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Among 433 intracranial meningeal tumours treated from 2000 to 2008, eight cases (2%) have been presumed to be associated with high-dose therapeutic radiation for previous neoplasm of the head (7) or neck (1). On average, tumours were diagnosed 24 years after irradiation. All patients had a solitary meningeal tumour, but two of them a
